If Carey stays then it should get interesting how they balance the book in terms of minutes. Harris and Aminu obviously start so I think if Carey is around then it will come down to if Rice is better than Carey and that will determine if Aminu plays SG or SF. But I am sure it will be cycled around especially situation dependent to utilize everyone best. I could certainly see Carey go back to being a solid 6th man so I just hope the staff can use Riley enough as he will be great in time but at the moment there is a lot of talent ahead which is good of course

After this year it will be May 1, this year is July 1, with the new rules. That's this year, right? July 1 is for spring sports. There is no current provision for immediate transfers going forward right now (though that may change). A basketball player can transfer whenever they want, but this year - with the one-time exemption - you need to do it before May 1 to get the free pass. Otherwise you're going to have to sit like you normally would have. Athletes in fall/winter sports like, football and basketball, would face a May 1 deadline to enter the transfer portal. Spring athletes would have a July 1 deadline in order to gain immediate eligibility.www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/ncaa-council-passes-one-time-transfer-legislation-allowing-athletes-immediate-eligibility/This year fall and winter are July 1. After 2021 it goes to July 1. This is a bit of a mess as June 1 starts the usual quiet period for recruiting again with focus on high school teams playing summer leagues again.

Here’s my guess: Harris Carey Aminu Rice King Somewhat small, but have Ryan and Tim as 5 men off the bench. Would envision Sibley, Riley and Clark playing big roles off the bench. If that team could match up well against opposition to not get exploited then it could be so lethal imo

We may very well go with a 3 guard line up with two forwards and no true center. Small ball if you will. I for one would be fine with it. Then to change the look you come in with Timmy and Ryan.

I thinkthis is a Ewing line up/depth chart based on past preference for experience over talent (and recognizing that 3 of players likely must transfer)
Harris, Beard, Berger, Azinge Carey, Riley, Clark, Robinson Aminu, Rice, Sibley King, Holloway, Billingsley, Muresan Ighoefe, Mutumbo, Wilson
I'd love to go small with King at the 5, but I don't see Rice or Aminu at he 4 ... Holloway should tiny signs of an Unseld/Barkley low center gravity rebounder .. but the sample was like under 5 minutes. It would be great if Mutumbo is ready to play .. but that's a question mark. I'd love to start Rice at the 2 ... but not sure he can defend. This becomes a lot easier if kids make a "jump" - Berger, Clark, Sibley, Holloway ... Timmy! ... and what about Wilson??

It's July 1st for this year. Here's the full rule: "Members also adopted deadlines for student-athletes to provide written notification of transfe r if they want to compete immediately. The deadlines will be May 1 for fall and winter sport student-athletes and July 1 for spring sport student-athletes, but the Council also granted a blanket waiver for this year only that sets the date for all student-athletes as July 1. Members noted the May 1 deadline was just a month away, and the waiver would provide students additional time they might need to decide."Ah yes. You guys are correct. Bad reading (skimming) skills on my part. But to be fair to these players, they shouldn't wait until July. The longer they wait or are told they have to leave quality landing spots will be far and few. I don't mind if my kid is asked to leave. What I would take issue with is asking him/her to leave late in the game.

My hope is that if the staff is talking to the players from last year's team about their options for playing time on this years team, I hope they are giving them as much time and notice to make informed decisions. I am a little surprised some of the players have not already seen the writing on the wall and figured out if there is going to be PT available at their positions next year. With the two transfers that have already committed you have to think a few guys are looking at minimal opportunity for next year, because you have to assume the transfers are going to be in the rotation..

Is it possible some are already in the transfer portal? My understanding is that the portal is not public but only coaches may access it. Nothing mandates that the player publicize entering the transfer portal and the portal provides for privacy of the student-athlete. www.ncaa.org/static/champion/what-the-ncaa-transfer-portal-is/

Sadly in this new era of college basketball, free agency for athletes is going to have the consequence of more and more kids being asked to move on. Agree that the earlier this happens the better. Have no problem with a coach telling a kid he doesn't fit because of his approach to the game, or to practice or to off court activities, like academics or getting into trouble. Still bothered by the coach moving on from a kid just because there is a shinier new toy available through the transfer portal. Believe it or not there are still kids who come to campus for an education as well as the opportunity to play Division 1 basketball. While these kids are likely not the stars, they also may be the type of kid who holds down your 12th or 13th scholarship, works his ass off in practice and enjoys the experience of being a part of the team. Making those kids leave to replace them with someone better who is still not likely to see much playing time is more difficult for me to accept, but part of the new reality of college sports.

Yep, it’s a tough reality to embrace. But if that transition wins you games, you have to do it as a coach. When you see a guy for a year (or more), no rational coach is going to move on from a guy he really thinks might help him and knows the program for a guy he really doesn’t think is better. As the dad of one of those kids who is No. 12 or 13, I just don’t think you can justify standing pat in today’s transfer-happy climate. I actually think where you have a real point, and where there’s likely to be some real family friction, true occasional mistakes and real messes is going to be at Nos. 8-11. Even in the old paradigm, Nos. 12 and 13 were largely in flux. I think what this new climate is going to do is tantalize coaches into extending that mentality to the edge of their actual rotation. Subtract usual Sr attrition, and you might return 6/7 guys in a normal season who actually logged 5+ mpg the previous season. I’m betting you’re going to see those 8-11 guys starting to get shoved out.

The controversy will come with respect to recruiting over kids who are at the outer edge of the rotation. One of my kids played soccer in college not starting and getting limited PT until his junior year and we worried constantly throughout his first two years that he might get recruited over. I can easily understand your point about the tension it brings. Unfortunately, it is the price of giving these college athletes "free agency" which I think is only fair for those in basketball and football programs.

Whatever the lineup may be next year, I think the team should be better than this past one. Just from getting to train together sooner will be a huge help but the main plus should be the strength of our bench. Some games we had basically no points from the bench and if that had to do with PE liking a tighter and more experienced rotation is up for debate but having a stronger bench can save games so that should help a lot despite any net losses in talent but I think we will be better overall anyway

If you squint, all the pieces are there to really play any style you want. Ewing has wanted to play at a fast pace, but the only team that really got there was Mac / Akinjo freshman year team (it was also the worst from an offensive efficiency perspective I believe), which also happened to be the one with the deepest rotation for Ewing. But that team also suffered for stretches from a pretty rigid rotation where all the starters would be off the floor at the same time. I appreciate the value in familiarity of being on court with same 5, but I also hope in the non-con we see some experimenting with different combinations and defenses (zones, traps, pressing etc) Either way it's a different challenge than one Ewing has faced in previous seasons. It's also a good problem to have and a testament to the talent Ewing has acquired.

Yes, I think I learned scholarships are year-to-year. Kids are called in to have the conversation, and are asked to leave...no playing time expected.

Yup, the Gonzaga board is pretty matter of fact about it. They were like our two 7 footers (Ballo and the Eastern Eurpoean guy) are probably being recruited over (Chet Holmgeren) so they entered the transfer portal. If you want to win that's what you got to do. Few can't be nice and say, oh we can't have Chet Holmgeren because we have to honor our two 7 footers.

Did either of the two bigs have to leave Gonzaga due to Holmgren committing there? They both left a week before the Holmgren announcement. The feeling on their board was that both saw the writing on the wall and realized they were getting recruited over/not going to get any PT so left. The fans wanted to keep Ballo as a 4 year. Neither Ballo or the Eastern European 7 footer got much time in the tourney run as Few shortened the rotation to 7 guys. With Holmgren and if Timme comes back, that PT likely doesn't change next year.
