Hulu feed for CBSSN cut out at the 3:32 TO that came way too little too late, but even at that point the outcome was no longer in doubt. Embarrassing loss. Reminiscent of that Arkansas State game that started to make you think "not so sure how many more of these type of outcomes JT3 can survive." We had a crazy rebounding advantage of UMBC that essentially was the only way we pulled out that first game, but once that went away you can see right away where we stand even against the mid/low majors. Our effort level on the glass across the board wasn't nearly good enough all night. For the "we'll be OK when we get Bile back" crowd, just no. He's a fluid athlete, but with no discernable skill or high-level basketball IQ that would make you believe he'll be a consistent contributor. Completely lost defensively a few times and the only things that come to mind for him on the offensive end are out-of-control and a little bit selfish. Not good. For us to lean on him so heavily coming down the stretch especially when we needed rebounding and defense in the worst way was questionable, especially considering Clark's performance in the opener. I didn't think Q or Tim played particularly well at the defensive end today. They altered a few shots, but Navy got a ton more easy looks and second chance opportunities inside than I ever thought they would. Q picked it up offensively in the second half, but clearing out an entire side of the court for him to iso 1-on-1 with a defender isn't a long term strategy for success. Need to keep a shooter on his side and for Q to understand that he has to kick it out when the situation dictates that he should. Still extremely nervous anytime Carey is forced to put the ball on the deck. As a set shooter with an open look, sure. But when he has to drive to create for himself or someone else, it usually ends badly for us. We miss Terrell Allen badly. Defensively, we're still giving up way too many open perimeter looks. We lucked out that UMBC didn't have a single guy who could make us pay. Unfortunately, Navy did. Considering we'll be facing much better perimeter shooting teams than Navy... it's tough to see how this will work out. The press predictably came out when we fell behind, but outside of maybe 1 forced TO, wasn't much of a factor. All offseason we were told that an improvement in athleticism and more bodies would be the cures to what ailed our defense last year. I don't buy that. I'd like to say I was encouraged by Pickett shooting the ball a little bit better (aside from that one pull-up 3), but it's hard to take away any positives from tonight. At this point, I'm not even sure what can be corrected between now and Sunday to make that game competitive. Lastly, we need to stop it with the COVID excuses. Yes, it's a challenge we are facing, but we are not the only team that has been impacted by limitations/inabilities to practice, hasn't had time to allow for new players to gel, etc. It's on this staff to do better than they have done so far. Period. There are no excuses. We are a very poor Division I basketball team.

Ewing can't get out on the court and play for the kids too. What he is saying is correct, the team needs to guard better especially the team's opposing point guard. Wahab needs to come higher up the key to cut off the guard penetration by people like Cam who uses screens to get deep into the paint. There were two bad shots by Blair and Harris back to back when we were up by 7 or 8 points. On those bad shots, The Midshipmen got the rebound and scored quickly which got them back into the game. Those two bad shots taken by Blair and Harris were quick threes. Blair shot was a brick and Harris shot was an air ball. So yeah, what Ewing is saying is correct. What else do you expect for him to say? What he's doing is not taking accountability for his horrible coaching performance. The team defense was awful. Don't blame the players you have every single time. It's not a coincidence that our defenses have been awful for Ewing's entire tenure. Wahab's feet are slow, but he's also giving up the middle of the floor and multiple angles to attack for their guards. Why again? You think that's Wahab and has nothing to do with our PnR defensive scheme? And two bad shots excuse the entire game of no offensive movement??? And guys taking pullup threes instead of attacking the middle has nothing to do with coaching? I expect the coach to take come accountability for our putrid defense and our lazy offense tonight. Cam Davis getting any shot he wanted isn't solely on our guys. Even if Harris was getting torched, he needs to make an adjustment. Oh, and call a TO when your opponent is on a big run. You forget, that we were up in the second half by 7 or 8 points and we had momentum. At this point, Blair takes an ill advised shot quickly coming down the court. I guess the thought was to try to get some separation by making the lead double digit and hoping it takes the sails out of the Navy team. I personally believe that when you have the ball in your hands, and you have a nice lead especially after you have been going back and forth with Navy and struggling to get some separation or some distance, as far as the lead is concerned, you have to work for a good shot. Blair has the "green light" I am pretty sure of it. If Blair does have the "green light" that means he has the discrepancy to shoot the ball without needing the coach's approval. Blair not Ewing, took that shot. He should not have shot the ball that quickly in the possession. Blair should have passed the ball and directed the team to try to take the best shot possible. Blair hasn't learned when to make the right decision with the ball and that is very apparent. If we had Akinjo, he would have worked the play to get us the best shot. Also, Harris did the same exact thing the next play meaning he shot the ball to quickly. Ewing didn't shoot the ball Harris did. Now I agree that Ewing probably should have called a timeout after Blair shot the ball to reign in the guys but if he did that every time the guys need to be reign in, he would run out of timeouts quickly. The bottom line is our guys have to play more with their heads. It is as simple as that.

Blair shouldn't have the green light. That is the problem. Blair should be a 3rd or 4th option on a Big East caliber team.
On this year's team, he is the #1 option. That is not a knock on Blair. THAT is on Ewing as a recruiter. Recruiting is the lifeblood of coaching.

The team lacked intensity tonight. We were mathematically in the game towards the end, but let way too much time run down before fouling. Hell, the announcers were even pointing it out. These are on the coach.

The bottom line is our guys have to play more with their heads. It is as simple as that. Two plays don't mean much when you lose by 7 to a team who is objectively worse. You should be able to still win with those shots. Maryland allowed 52 to this team in the entire game. They scored 49 in the second half against us. Most of that is coaching. You can't reasonably blame the players entirely for this performance. You can't. The offense very rarely gained separation (no movement off the ball, which is coaching, but also we don't have shot creators, but no movement offensively was the headliner to me) and the defense was terrible. I don't blame the players for all of that. I don't blame solely Wahab for giving up the middle of the floor every PnR. I don't think you can. Navy shot 50% from the field. Duke tonight shot 32%. Michigan State has a well coached defense. We don't. That's the difference right there. It's not a coincidence.

The only positive I can take from this , is that I really can’t imagine getting bothered by a single loss this season. My fandom goes back to 1975, and I can’t recall a less talented roster. Perhaps there was one or two, but if so, my brain did me the favor or deleting those memories.
I will root for the kids, of course, but there aren’t many legit , major conference contributors on the team. No coaching strategy will change that.
All I really need to see is EFFORT... that is one thing they can control. Not sure I saw much of that on defense tonight.

You have got to be kidding? Dante Harris was by far the worst player on the floor for either team at any time tonight. He’s completely out of control, a marginal passer and missed all of his triples with nobody in the same area code defending him. He might be a great kid, but the 7-8 minute stretch starting at about 14 min with DHarris and Bile in game together completely killed the Hoyas tonight. Do you mean J Harris? The one with the headband was D Harris who actually played good defense, easily the best on the team. Unsure why he didn’t play at all in the second half... No, I mean Dante Harris. The freshman who had zero points on three shots and an otherwise completely empty stat line in 12 minutes. He was dreadful tonight on both ends, and totally lost on offense. I don’t blame the kid. I blame Pat for leaving two first-year D1 guys with zero offensive skills on the floor together (DHarris and Bile) for a 6-8 minute stretch when GU went from having a working margin to being tied and on the wrong end of momentum with 6 min left. Sorry, Ewing blew it. Sure, Blair and Pickett missed some shots during that period as well, but they have proved in past that they can come up big. The other two haven’t and shouldn’t have been in during that run that killed our mo. It’s not rocket science. Pat blew it tonight. Period. He has one job at the end of the day. Put his guys in best position possible to be successful, and he didn’t come close to that tonight. A rec league dad could have pulled better strings tonight after watching the first 30 minutes of the game. Sorry, that’s just the truth.

Maybe Tim outplays Malcolm in practice.

Bad performance, and same as many others, I place most of the blame on the coaching staff. Specifically the defense in the second half was inexcusable. We needed to make adjustments to take the Navy guard out of his groove, but other than showing a zone for one possession, and a soft press for a possession or two we didn’t commit to anything different until it was too late. Need to have more urgency in the first half, and to make adjustments in the second half to make someone else beat you. We’ve seen this many times at this point in PE’s tenure. If the defense shows no improvement then we are headed for a train wreck of a year.
And yes, Bile was terrible, and Ighoefe pretty bad. D Harris missed open shots but I liked his on ball defense. As always, need to stagger the substitution patterns so that we don’t have three subs in at once. This game reminded me of the Harvard game in the NIT.

Maybe Tim outplays Malcolm in practice. If so, then literally say that. Or anything other than "that's just how I feel."

Maybe Tim outplays Malcolm in practice. Maybe he does but if he stinks it up in the games then you have to look at other options. Wahab will not be able to play close to 30 minutes per game in BE play... It's early but this is starting to remind me of the Moses/Hayes debate back in the day, all I read was how Moses was "probably" playing well in practice...

Ewing may be bad coach, bad recruiter, but minutes have not been hard to come by for players who earned it during the Ewing era. It was a question that didn't warrant an answer. The guy wasn't really asking question, anyway. Ewing, being the good guy that he is, answered with class and honesty.

Maybe Ewing is just not a good head coach. Passion and love for a school does not necessarily equal good coaching. No one can question Anthony Perkins love for his mother—that did not make him a good son.

PE’s answer about the defense just “needs to guard better” bothers me. PE needs to look in the mirror. The players have changed, the coaches (and results) are the constant.

Rock bottom was last year with all of the departures and turmoil. You are now seeing the aftermath. Blair,Pickett, and Q are solid role, support type players. Go-to-guys to carry a team on a consistent basis in the Big East? Remains to be seen. This year is pretty much a wash, unless something drastically changes. Ewing has to recruit AND figure out how to coach defense. Next year's class better be legit and he needs to hire a d-coordinator as an assistant. This!

No doubt this is right and to quote an article previewing the season "people are gonna start to say Ewing's seat is hot after [and during] this season, but just ignore them" and wait for next season to fully make up your mind Patience sucks, all we can hope is that we don't do that that horribly, adjusts are made, and hold onto the solid recruits for next year (I think mutombo and beard are the two that can make the biggest splash) or maybe even get mohammed but that's doubtful at this point

Have not gone upstream with this thread, but here are my thoughts. In spite of the loss, our overall performance tonight was much better than our first outing. We played a much more experienced team tonight. Obviously, we are young, and we have a lot to learn. However, I love this group of guys. It is going to take patience as we grow and gain more of a feel for game situations. Loved the way Pickett allowed the game to come to him. Also love the way the guys are not afraid to shoot the ball. We will get there. But it is going to take time. Perhaps, even more than one season, provided we can keep this group of guys together.

If he cannot figure out how to coach defense after 3 full seasons, and makes no effort to bring in a different assistant who can help in that regard, what are we doing? Others have said a lot on the game, so I don't have much to add specifically. Though, I did think at times Dante Harris played good on-ball defense despite his other weaknesses. This is about as hopeless as I have been ever in my Georgetown fandom. We have a low talent, poorly coached team. We have a coaching staff that has been progressing in the wrong direction since taking over. We have seen no discernible improvement through two games on a defense that has been absolutely putrid during the entire Ewing era. And, I see no desire/thirst for change, even though the situation we are in now, and likely will be in at the end of the season is far worse than the situation that brought about change in 2017. But, this is what happens when you try to make a change in leadership, and pick somebody who is unproven and needs on-the-job training. I will still hope for improvement, because I desperately want to see our program turn around, but I am not optimistic that will happen.
