There were 102 freshman recruits for Thompson from 1972-99, net of inbound transfers, JC's and walk-ons. A majority (54 of the 102) played within an hour of campus. Another eight were from Louisiana. Just 40 recruits in 27 years were from outside one of those two destinations. Eight of those 40 were within the original Big East footprint: NY: 6 (M. MacDermott, F. Brown, D. Edwards, R. Gibson, S. Jones, J. Watkins) MA: 1 (P. Ewing) NJ: 1 (A. Perry) PA: 0 CT: 0 RI: 0 Very interesting. Nice work, DFW. If Nevada produced much better talent I would guess it would easily have beaten out Louisiana for that #2 spot. Demetrius Hunter? Who else?

I was making a joke about Thompson's affinity for Vegas. That was a place he didn't mind getting on an airplane for. Btw wasn't Hunter an Esherick recruit?

Demetrius Hunter? Who else? Jason Burns (1999-00), from Durango HS. Three games, two points. His last appearance was the second home game of the year (0-3 vs Howard) and he was DNP thereafter.

Been quite awhile since I saw a reference to the Hoya on whom my board name is based! I'll never forget the comeback from 8 points down with 56 seconds left against BC (before there was a 3 point shot) and Mike Frazier's winning bucket that capped it. As I recall, it also included brilliant use of fouling, offense/defense substitutions, and time outs on the part of JT.

I was living in the Boston area when I saw that game on cable TV. The Hoyas' miracle comeback was my introduction to GU basketball. When I moved back home to DC in 1980 I immediately became a Hoya season ticket holder and thoroughly enjoyed watching Big John's teams up close and personally. Not just good times... GREAT times!

The comeback against Kentucky in the 1984 semifinals is stuff of legend.

Agree. Olympia Fields was designed to be a very affluent community but the north and west suburbs won out. An Olympia Fields address is not unequivocal signal of affluence. Back in the early nineties, I worked with Kendall Gill's cousin. We worked at a bank together for years. He never told me that his cousin was rich, never. Gill didn't grow up with a silver spoon. Did he tell you Kendall was poor? It's all relative but I've always heard he was well off. He would travel from the suburbs into inner city Chicago to hone his game and play against the best players just like junior high kid Chris Mullin and Michael Rappaaport went up to Harlem to improve his game.
