I just watched the game. We lost, but it was more competitive than I thought it would be and i I'm really impressed by our guys. They have a ton of heart. We can compete with anyone in the Big East.

The need for Pickett’s rebounding and ability to guard the PF (or attempt) will have him starting over Blair. We are too small otherwise. As it is, Yurtseven and Pickett both aren’t latterly quick. We just have to do our best, which was pretty darn good last night.

There were a lot of great plays and players tonight. Mosely has to get some sort of award for everything he is doing. Yurtseven has been changing his game up and is getting offensive putback on teammates misses against teams with bigs that were a huge challenge for him just weeks ago. Blair has drastically improved and is playing within himself. But Pickett's defense tonight and quite a few times absolutely skying to get contested rebounds was deeply impressive. He had hustle and had a couple strong long rolling drives to the basket (one went and the other rimmed out and Yurt put it back for an and one), these long rolling drives were Pickett's achillies heel the early this year and the past two years. With all the running and hustle, I'm not surprised his 3s were a little off. Picket played with his strengths and added new twists to what he can do, but also was playing smarter. We must have been watching different games because in the game I watched, Pickett was an absolute horror show tonight on both ends. Consistently getting torched 1v1, failing to set up and guard the ball handler when his man set the screen, and getting lost on rotations several times. Yes he grabbed a couple rebounds. Offensively he continued to miss wide open 3s and no less than 4 times did he drive directly at Gill and get blocked (Gills entire first half highlight reel was blocking Pickett). He’s been absolutely killing us on both ends recently, but we literally have no one else to put on the floor. Ok, I’m ready. Go ahead and tell me I’m wrong and you’re the only one that knows anything about basketball, the game last night was impressive, etc etc. O and every missed wide open 3 is because of tired legs.

I agree 100% on Pickett. The only part of his game he stepped up after the 4 players left has been rebounding. His offensive game hasn't improved in 3 years. Under 40% shooter for a player with that length and athletic ability is mind boggling. IMO, he hasn't developed the ball handling skills to create his own shot. He's constantly fumbling the ball around on drives and he isn't a good passer. His stationary shooting hasn't improved and he doesn't get shots in the paint.

The most important thing is that he is getting to the line. Manu is a tough match up for Pick. He is for anybody. I truly get that he is frustrating. I think that he needs to just play and get out of his head. It is also clear that he works hard on his skills. But this fan base is focusing on someone who had 10 rebounds for us last night and he routinely alters shots to make shooters uncomfortable. He is not a horror show.

Just back from game. The atmosphere and crowd was good for a Wednesday, 830 game. I sat about 6 rows behind MAM and I think he enjoyed it. Here's hoping. Sounds like we have ~5k in attendance? Was that under reported or have things gotten so bad that having 5k attend a Wednesday 8:30 game against the #12 team good? Glad MAM seemed enjoyed himself. Could certainly use him next year

Agree. Pickett had an awful game. Offensively, he went 1-4 3FG with all shots being of the open variety and 3 of 11 FG overall. What’s worse is that he passed up plenty of open 3s to wait for his defender, roll to the basket to then get blocked by Gill repeatedly. Pickett singlehandedly helped Gill have a career night in blocks. I won’t complain much about the roll because I complain that he does it once in a blue moon And last night he tried it several times. But, the fact is that his rolls were in slow motion, instead of very aggressive, and it was too easy for Gill to block. Defensively, johnny covered it, but I’ll add that Pickett’s foul trouble led to Pat using W with O in a zone for what seemed like more minutes than ever. Kudos to Pat for finally trying it that long. What’s more, we saw some O, Q and Pickett zone together, which could be another wrinkle that Pat uses to give our 35/40-mpg guards a breather or vs tall teams. Finally, I liked Pickett’s rebounding. I also liked that he’s using the glass more; it’s just not going in because of his inconsistent/lack of touch and the angles he uses.

Could certainly use him next year Given the adversity the team has faced this year, around 5,000 with relatively decent student attendance is good IMO. I made my observation prior to even seeing the announced attendance so perhaps it is more accurate to state that the crowd overperformed relative to its size when the team made its mini-runs at SHU's lead although never getting over the hump. I truly appreciate the "don't quit" attitude despite the horrific start that I saw last night and I think the crowd reacted accordingly.

Proud of the hustle and will to fight back into the game. That being said, it’s unacceptable to start the game the way we did.
• Looking at the four Seton Hall 3s to start the game:
o Rhoden 1st: Simple pass to the nearest shooter next to the pick and roll. Hard hedge forces Allen to not follow Rhoden and tag Gill rolling. Open catch and shoot 3. My biggest pet peeve of hard hedge but it is what it is at this point.
o Powell 1st: The most defensible. Hard hedge does its job and forces Powell to retreat. Mosely going under the screen just doesn’t quite get back to bother Powell. It’s still an off-the-dribble contested, deep 3. Have to live with those
o Rhoden 2nd: Mosely and Allen mix up a switch AGAIN. I’m generally pro-switching, but it’s either a switch all or switch none type deal. It seems like we’re arbitrarily trying to call on the fly and it led to a wide open Rhoden 3
o Powell 2nd: Pickett does nothing to help when Mosely gets screened by Mamu. Maybe we’re just expecting Mosely to fight over the top but Pickett needs to be prepared to hedge there. Broadcast called this one out at halftime
• From Ewing’s perspective, you have to credit the switching defenses. Particularly the decision to try the Wahab / Yurt7 zone when Powell was off the court for stretches. When Powell came back on the court we probably should’ve switched out of it, but at least he was engaging Willard in the chess game. I even saw a box-and-one on Powell w 5 min left in the 2nd half.
• Wahab hopefully will be great but you did see some of the freshman issues today. Too many fouls. When he was anchor in 2-3 zone, Samuel went right around him for a layup. Rhoden stripped him clean on a dive to the hoop off a Yurt7 double team. He gave Powell an in-rhythm, wide-open 3 as wing in 2-3 zone. Things that you expect won’t be a problem next season but there is still work there and expecting him to replace Yurt7 production is already setting us up for disappointment
• The press didn’t really lead to any turnovers, but for a team that is so bad defending in the half court, even if you make a team use 10 seconds to get across halfcourt and get into their sets, that’s probably worth doing to make our lives easier. As long as you don’t give up a layup as a result and we didn’t. I’ve been skeptical of a full court trapping press, but a 3/4 court press forcing them to use clock could be valuable
• The team continued to drive to the hoop, especially when Hall was in bonus w 13min left. Even though we didn’t make a lot of them, Gill contests EVERYTHING and it led to easy putbacks.
• From a player development perspective, it is crazy to me that Yurt7 didn’t come back from a year off being able to shoot 3s. He had two wide open ones because Gill doesn’t want to go out there and Hall plays drop coverage. You hit those and Hall has to switch out to zone or take Gill off court. Yurt7 went 22-44 his sophomore year and now 3-13 for us. Not only would it help us and make the twin tower lineups feasible on offense, it’s what’s needed to make the NBA. If that wasn’t a focus from the coaching staff then that is failing the player.
• Seton Hall is a team with a real PF w Mamu back and you saw the limitations of Pickett in that role. We gave up a 3 when we had to help him double in the post. Then we didn’t double and Mamu went right around him. He wasn’t quick enough off the dribble to make Mamu pay on the other end. Mamu also got a bunch of offensive rebounds or tip outs. One of the few teams in Big East that can cause that issue but Pickett was exposed a bit. Pickett's too slow to guard perimeter players but not fast enough to take advantage of his speed on the other end against big guys

Pickett's offense has not been good and he missed some open shots. His rebounding is good and his defense this year has been good more often than not. He is also playing out of position and has been all year as the coach made that decision from the outset when he started him and Mosley together pushing LeBlanc to the bench.
But if the goal is to find the negatives in a season that has gone to hell, then let's also talk about Mosley going out of control down the stretch while trying to bring the Hoyas back, Wahab having 4 consecutive series down the stretch where he turned it over, took a bad shot or committed a bad foul, Yurtseven playing only one strong half, some wild dribbling into the lane by Allen and a poor shooting night for Blair (who was getting killed on this Board just a short while ago and most of last season). Let's also not forget to mention how much better ball movement the Hoyas have with McClung on the bench. They are all there, all true---just pick your flavor and have it because after every loss there's going to be plenty to legitimately complain about.
Or maybe we can agree that this team has had virtually no chance to succeed since the departures plus two missed games by McClung, Ewing has not been able to successfully recruit and keep shooters and by the way the Hoyas could not play defense for a full game with a full roster, much less a 6 man rotation. Pretty big odds for a handful of players to overcome.
Great effort. Love the heart. Still some talented kids out there trying to win games. They could still shock someone on a given night, but probably won't and may struggle to win another game. Happy to go back to being negative when this team has a full roster and a reasonable chance to play a full game against more talented and deeper teams.

Pickett is what he is at this point. He has been a good rebounder this year and better on defense. It’s clear that he will not be a reliable jump shooter. He is good from the free throw line. Frankly I don’t want to see him take another 3 point shot. If he’s wide open I’d rather he drive, initiate contact and get to the line. He has been a momentum killer with his wide open 3 point attempts. Not trying to dog the guy. There are positives that he brings threes just aren’t in his repertoire (and it’s not tired legs - results similar at beginning of game). He can be a productive player provided he accepts his limitations. Unfortunately, other teams have him scouted and they are more than happy to leave him open at the 3 point line at this point. He just needs to learn to make a quick decisive move to the basket when he receives that ball and resist the temptation to launch it.

Happy to go back to being negative when this team has a full roster and a reasonable chance to play a full game against more talented and deeper teams. Didn't see a lot of that. Thought Blair was great and continues to play above his head. Allen completely carried the team in the 1st half, and he and Jagan chased Powell around all night without leaving the floor - a brutal chore. Thought Q had a tough night, but no surprise for a frosh against easily the best big in the league. And Yurt was Yurt; he's never going to be a bruiser and that 7-2 blockosaur is a dreadful matchup for him. Pickettt...I saw one great iso move where he used the window going to his right and one super uber man-sized, best-board-of-the-game-by-miles rebound and then a whole bunch of lost...lousy D on the Euro kid, slow rolls, no-recognition closeouts, pathetic weakside block out effort and the worst and most reticent 3-point performance I've seen in a long time. I'd rather see 1-9 than a guy pass up open triple after open triple. He has no confidence and no hoops IQ. I'm sorry, but he's killing us right now....absolutely killing us. Fine, maybe I'm overly hard on him because of the flashes of incredible brilliance, but it's even harder to watch when the margin is so slim and other far less talented kids are leaving everything on the floor.

There are no moral victories at this point, but the team played hard and competed with a really good team all night without it's leading scorer. Even undermanned they play an exciting brand of basketball and work very hard, but they just don't have enough playmakers who can consistently make shots to win if they don't play an almost perfect game against good teams. The margin for error is really small for them now. Hope the guys they have now can stay healthy the rest of the way and they can win the home games they should (DePaul and Providence) and then maybe surprise another team or two along the way.

I don’t care what people say, this team has been the most fun and exciting team in the last 7 years.
If those other teams had the heart and drive of this depleted, undermanned team they wound have been in the tournament.

You can blame all the turmoil on Ewing - and it is definitely ridiculous to have only 6/7 legitimate Power 5 players on the roster at the moment. But you must also credit him for the way this team plays so hard for him. They have a fire that has been lacking from the program for more than a decade. It's fun to watch them play, and they are overmatched every time they take the court (yes, even this weekend against DePaul). And you know what? This team could still sneak into the tournament. The remaining schedule presents them that opportunity. That would be a joyous development, and in this bizarre season it wouldn't actually shock me. One thing I know is if they miss it won't be for lack of effort and fire. Bring 'em on.

I saw what saxagael saw. His rebounds were huge in keeping us in the game during the first half when he had 8. I also thought he showed real improvement in getting to the basket. Those going full awful are not giving the kid credit for his importance in rebounding and on defense (yes, he can certainly improve the latter but he is not alone in that regard on this team)> His shot and offense in general seem entirely dependent on confidence. When he hits a few early he is much more decisive in his shot selection, form and execution. His drive across the lane for the off glass banker led directly to a Yurtseven bucket. It was the right play and he executed it well. I find it pretty laughable the extent to which some are willing to completely slaughter this kid who truly works hard and frankly, is the only option for his team at this point. On another subject, this woefully undermanned team pushed a team with legit final 4 aspirations to the limit when their POY candidate could not miss AND when said undermanned team was missing THEIR main scoring option. Think about that for a moment. I am not for moral victories, but these guys deserve real credit for their fight and determination, as does the coaching staff for defensive adjustments the last 2 games that have had real impact.

One other thing: I think Seton Hall is a legitimate national title contender. With an All-American that can bail them out of tight spots on his own (Powell hit some huge shots everytime Hoyas threatened), a star on the rise in McKnight and just a mammoth front court, they will be a lot for anyone in the bracket to handle. We played them very tight. I was very impressed by them (and us, frankly).

Spot on. Ball movement has been tremendous the last 2 games without guys just looking for their own shot all the time. Defense is also looking much improved. Sadly, I'm guessing we will revert back to our old ways in a game or two and go back to getting blown out every night. I wonder why we have seen such improvement in ball movement and defense the last 2 games 🤷♂️

He’s very inconsistent and outside of last night has not been very good in conference play this year. He’s reliant on a superstar whistle and can be abused on defense. He’s considered a much better player than he actually is because of his scoring. There is a reason he’s still in college.
