Great W! Great W! Great W! Very fitting ending to the game! Pat outcoaches Anderson by changing the defense for the 2nd half. Who cares if we don't have legs vs. SHU. Mac will be really fresh, though.

Blair played really well today on both ends.
Mosely had a tough day shooting, but steals, defense, tough play on both ends, and perfect from the line helped greatly.
Three Hoyas had 5 assists, and Yurtseven had 4 really helped and shows good team play and the good ball movement the Hoyas showed today.
Pickett has a rough day on the offensive end, but his defense not only recovered from the disaster of a game last game, including 3 blocks. I was deeply impressed by this turn around as it shows he is listening and along with changes and improvement he has shown on the offensive end and not only listens to the coaching, but is coachable and has room to grow and improve.
Yurtseven had 12 offensive rebounds as part of the 43 overall rebound team effort that bested the Johnnies 37. He played smarter inside and played stronger, further shaking off the European finesse game he leans on a lot (a lot of European finesse bigs in the NBA, but adding power will help his case getting there). Yurt's defense was really good in the second half in the middle, but he didn't have size to challenge him and that is often where he excels on both sides of the ball.
Allen had some good defense and good effort keeping the offense on target.
All of this with Mac injured on on the bench.

Quick poll: Which Butler player will have a career night vs. GU? The answer was Sean McD. Quick poll: Which SJU player will have a career game vs. GU? I'm going to make an exception here: The answer is our very own Blair with 23 pts!!!

A lot of times, the most important thing for a team is belief. There were some road games earlier this season where it was apparent that the belief to pull off a victory wasn't there, and it showed on the court. But today, even with the deficit growing, the frustrations boiling over, increasingly maddening 2nd half officiating calls that have started to become the norm rather than the exception, etc. there was never a sense that this team had stopped believing it could come back. I'm so happy that they finally got one to go their way.
It may have been out of desperation, but it doesn't matter: Ewing's decision to press changed the complexion of this entire game. It completely took St. John's out of rhythm on the offensive end and got us a host of easy baskets that we were not getting early in the halfcourt. Ewing still had a couple of bonehead moments: defending the end of 1st half possession and not directing Allen to be the primary ball handler against pressure in the final minutes (Mosely with 6 TOs) were among them, but between the decision to press and at least making an attempt to show different looks (man vs. zone) during the course of the game is a step in the right direction.
Being honest here: despite the high rebound total, Yurt had a miserable first 30 minutes and the decision to ride him in the 2nd half instead of going to Q was looking more and more shaky. But the big man came through down the stretch. Aggressive post moves (finally). The sweet assist to Pickett in traffic. Recognizing doubles a little bit quicker and kicking out to open shooters. Whether or not it can happen against legit frontcourt players with size and strength is still a question mark, but we don't win today without his surge in the final 10 minutes.
Saw a lot of posts during the game about Mac not getting the same benefit of the doubt as a gunner that Blair was getting. When Mac goes 9-19 (5-11 from 3), 5 assists and plays the defense that Blair did today, the Mac apologists can complain. Point total aside, that was the best game defensively that I've ever seen Blair play. Came up big today with the team shorthanded. If Mac is sidelined again for Wednesday, we are going to need a similar effort from Blair to stay competitive.
Was happy with Pickett's effort on the boards and overall a better effort defensively compared to past games (although he still helped off Heron a little too much for my liking). But man, he's got to do a better job keeping his head there. There are dirty plays that you can take exception to; that wasn't one of them by Figueroa.
The Mosely T was even worse. Didn't show up anyone or say anything. Delay of game at best, but these refs unbelievably thought otherwise. Mosely had several raw deals from the refs today. The type of calls you expect to get hosed by when you're on the road. Not like at home vs. Butler.
Great team win. Great comeback especially without a key rotation player available. But still a long way to go. An increasingly common theme that's showing up in these conference losses is that guys are not hitting open shots. Hoping that confidence returns and our perimeter shooters can get back to making teams pay for leaving them open, because we nearly gifted this game to a bad SJU team by not doing just that. Those open looks will be much more rare against an elite defensive team coming off a loss like SHU, so they need to hit them when they get them.
Don't give up yet, folks. 1 win get us back to the bubble.

Much different game in the second half. Gutty comeback win without Mac. Things go much better when the defense shows up and forces turnovers.

The ball movement and spacing were way better today. Even early when we missed every shot you could see the offense was running way better. The defense today was pretty good but that has as much to do with them as it does us.

So now the big question--is there any news on the severity of McClung's injury? Great game for confidence but no way in hell can this team play well without McClung on Wednesday.

Great atmosphere at garden in second half. I can’t believe we won. Great defense but we held our composure and came back. Well done. Good to see a W inperson

Hope Mac is back on Wednesday. I'm still salty with Gill pushing Mac! How you gonna push a guard a whole foot shorter then you and you got him by 70lbs and probably half an arm length? That's a punk move! And no tech called, that one was bad on the refers.

Best game of Blair's career to date by far. Good for him.
Still not done.

Stealing one on the road means that if we can win our home games we get to 9-9. We are back on serve.

Biggest deficit was 50-33. Blair and Yurt hit some key shots to close the gap; Ewing went full court press causing a StJs meltdown getting the lead down to around 5pts with 4mins left; the boys played really good D the rest of the way with Blair, Moseley and Yurt making enough shots to steal the game.....
