Part of this narrowing of our recruiting targets for '23 is probably a shift to using the transfer recruiting pool in the spring as the primary way to fill any roster spots that open up due to transfer/professional departures.
Since we only have one scholarship player definitely out of eligibility at the end of this season (Mozone), It makes some sense to prioritize a small number of 2023 players, and devote more of our current recruiting time/energy to 2024 players. then in the spring the coaches will dig into the transfer portal to fill openings created by players transferring out/going pro.
I'm not saying this is the best strategy, or even a good strategy. But I can understand the reasoning.

In the grand scheme it doesn't but for a thread about 2023 recruiting it is relevant to them refocusing and reducing the number of targets. It appears they don't really want to add many if any freshman for next year and at present they don't really have many scholarships to fill. We may all think we know what will happen but that doesn't make it factual. Just because a guy on Twitter says they've reduced their # of targets doesn't mean it is true. Sure, it's clear they've honed in on Miranda, Allen and Parker as highest priority targets. My guess is it's because they think they can get 1 or more of those guys (we're likely the current leader for Allen and Parker) and they want to concentrate on getting them. I highly doubt the reason we're not visbily going after more guys is because the staff doesn't think they'll have many scholarships to work with. Nickleberry has probably gotten Ewing to pivot from the "throw as many spaghetti noodles at the wall and see what sticks" recruiting strategy to the "hone in on a few guys we have a shot with and pay the most attention and money compared to other programs recruiting them" strategy. Agree with the "just because a guy on Twitter" line, for sure. Plus, it seems like every year, we get someone who was never mentioned on the board before the week he committed. And this has been true for as long as there has been a message board, across several coaching regimes.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing - obviously contradicts the notion that we're only recruiting a small few 2023 targets.

Auburn, Texas, Seton Hall, and Arkansas are among the schools prioritizing the five star big man and he spoke some schools with 247Sports. Auburn: “I had a really good visit. I enjoyed it. I had fun going around campus, talking to the coaches and I seeing the players. They’re message was to keep playing hard and doing my thing. For them they’re hoping I land there and that we can work to get me to the next level the best way.” Arkansas: “When I went to Arkansas it was when they played a game against Kenutcky and I’ve never seen fans go crazy like that. The facilities were also good and what they had on the table.” Seton Hall: “It was good getting out there in New Jersey talking with the coaches. They said the good stuff. It was good to hear what they planned on having me do if I end up there.” 247sports.com/college/basketball/recruiting/Article/Basketball-recruiting-Baye-Fall-Auburn-Seton-Hall-Texas-Rutgers-190039887/5-star Baye Fall (C) On3 Consensus Ranking: No. 9 Accelerated Schools Aka Family Services Found (CO) | Class of 2023 Which schools are recruiting you the hardest? Seton Hall, Texas, Arkansas, Oregon, Rutgers, Auburn, Colorado. What schools would you like to visit? I’ll be visiting Texas on September 10th. In the same month, I’ll visit Rutgers, and I also want to revisit Arkansas and Seton Hall. Did you have a dream school growing up? Not really. Which college coach would you say you’ve formed the closest relationship with and why? Seton Hall because I got a good relationship with Coach Shaheen Holloway. Is there anybody you’d like to team up with in college or is anyone recruiting you to join them? I want to play with Assane Diop (cousin) if it’s possible but other than that, a couple of guys have told me that they want to team up with me. www.on3.com/news/top-prospects-go-on-record-about-their-recruitment/

Hubbard has taken official visits to LSU (old staff) and Ole Miss and has been to Houston and Mississippi State unoficially. He'll be back at MSU for an official visit next week. More than likely, Hubbard's recruitment is going to end up a showdown between the two in state programs. He's even got a decision date in mind so the battle is on for the next few months. "I've chosen a date of September 22nd so pretty soon but not too far away," said Hubbard. "There's not really any significance to the date I just wanted to set something so I would do it before the season. I'll look at their playing style and if I will fit in because I want to play fast and physical. The culture of the program and the coaching staff will be important. 247sports.com/college/basketball/recruiting/Article/College-basketball-recruiting-Josh-Hubbard-Ole-Miss-Mississippi-State-188558142/Ole Miss is also emerging as the leader for Madison, Miss., four-star guard Josh Hubbard. Hubbard has more than a dozen offers, including overtures from Houston, Mississippi State, LSU, Kansas State and Georgetown. There are questions about Hubbard's game based strictly on the level of high school competition, but he's played a ton for Team Thad and that should silence those doubts. olemiss.rivals.com/news/mccready-10-weekend-thoughts-presented-by-gamechanger-patch-co--48Hubbard is having a very nice Peach Jam, look for his ranking to go up - 19 points (5-8 3fg), 8 assists, 1 turnover today in a win for Team Thad. basketball.exposureevents.com/183330/event/documents/gamestatistics?ids=19397554&output=pdf&v=637938460080108009&r=12

The Team Thad guard is pushing to break the Mississippi state high school scoring record this season, and that nose for the bucket has not slowed down on the EYBL Circuit. Hubbard averages 16.3 points per game while shooting 35-percent from three. The 6-foot-0 guard showcases an innate toughness about him that keeps attacking at Peach Jam. Hubbard currently claims offers from Ole Miss, Xavier, Kansas State, and others. www.on3.com/news/shaws-sights-and-sounds-peach-jams-x-factors-who-help-teams-win-games/

One of the nation's top prospects at the power forward position received an offer from Georgia Tech and head coach Josh Pastner this week. Dylan James, a 6-8 195 LBS player from Winter Haven, Fl, added to his long list of offers with one from the Yellow Jackets, along with some offers from other top programs in the country. Other offers from James include Alabama, Dayton, Creighton, Florida, Georgetown, Miami, and Virginia Tech, amongst others. It will be a heavy battle for James, but he would be a welcome addition to the class. www.yardbarker.com/college_basketball/articles/georgia_tech_basketball_offers_2023_top_100_player_dylan_james/s1_17021_37702614

Dennis Parker, a 6-foot-6 wing out of Richmond (Va.) John Marshall, had a productive first weekend of the high school live period in June. As of now Parker is currently being prioritized by Oklahoma State, Mississippi State, Georgia State, Georgetown among others. Georgetown: “Coach Nick and Patrick Ewing came out to see me and It meant a lot especially from Patrick Ewing. He’s a legend and I’m thankful and blessed with this opportunity.” Oklahoma State: “I plan on taking a visit to Oklahoma State soon probably late summer or late fall. Coach Larry Blunt and I have been in consistent contact since early last year.” “I would say I’m not that deep into the recruitment process,” he said. “I’m still really open to it. I’m looking forward to taking visits both official and unofficial getting to see college campuses. My decision won’t come any time soon probably during the high school season.” 247sports.com/college/basketball/recruiting/Article/Basketball-recruiting-Dennis-Parker-Oklahoma-State-Georgetown-189189611/

Dennis Evans, the 7-foot-1, 210-pound center from Hillcrest High School in Riverside, Calif., is one of the most heavily coveted prospects in the 2023 class. However, that wasn’t always the case for the No. 12 ranked player in the class. “Dennis really isn’t into the blue blood programs,” he continued. “Kansas is probably it (when it comes to the blue blood programs recruiting Dennis Evans), because he has a relationship with Kurtis Townsend.” Currently, Kansas, TCU, Minnesota, California Riverside, Missouri, Florida State, San Diego State, Texas, Oklahoma State, and Georgetown are a few of the programs that have invested quite a bit of time recruiting Evans. However, during Monday’s interview with JayhawkSlant.com, “Kool-Aid” made it perfectly clear that three programs, at least at this stage, have separated themselves from the pack. “Kansas already offered Dennis and he’s considering Kansas,” he said. “He’s considering Kansas heavy. He’s considering Kansas heavy, as well as Minnesota and TCU. Those are probably the three main schools. After this weekend, Chris Beard (Texas) was at the game the other day. They offered him and they made it very clear, them and Oklahoma State, that they would come. Georgetown has definitely been on him. "The funny part is, maybe only one West Coast school is really recruiting him,” he added. “That school is San Diego State. Listen, like I said, Dennis is a kid who is intelligent, grounded and it's not about the NIL with him. In seven Peach Jam games, Norman’s production was extremely consistent, as he averaged 23.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per contest. He operates well from the point of attack and his physicality made life very tough on each defender he faced. His best performance of the weekend was in a win over The Skill Factory, where he accounted for 30 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Analytically, Norman was a top-five performer at the 17U level according to Cerebro Sports. Norman, who should end up with a nice rankings bump in the next update, holds offers from Georgetown, Miami, Texas A&M, Marquette, and Harvard as well as many others. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/peach-jam-prospects-who-boosted-their-stock
