He's having a rough year, worse than I expected. But we knew he was raw and he has serious tools. I'll be happy if he improves by the end of the season.

I think that Pickett is a very talented kid and has tremendous upside. Does he take too many shots? Yes. And he needs to work on his handle as well. However, unlike some other heralded freshmen in recent years, like LJ, Copeland, White and Govan, Pickett has to play a much bigger role on this team and has much less help on the offensive end of the court. Moreover, at this stage I think he is farther along than most were or at least as far along.
The problem is that Kaleb has come back to earth after a hot start against horrible competition, Ewing does not have the luxury of moving MD or Govan outside to help the perimeter scoring and there is not guard on this team who can consistently hit a deep shot, or in some cases even take a deep shot. Blair and Walker have farther to go than Pickett, but are less heralded and more developmental players at this stage.
All that said, it is on the coach to figure out who to use, when and how. I think in both losses he has made some decisions during the "collapse" that can be questioned. But I would hope that fans look at Pickett for what he is-- a promising young player who can be a significant contributor this year and in the future.

I also see lots of untapped potential in Pickett, and actually like the fact that he is not afraid to take his shots. If we were an NCAA tourney team, after a couple of misses, he'd be back to the bench...but that is not the case here. Some of our talented guys in the past were way too timid,,this guy at least seems like he wants the ball. Obviously, he better improve a great deal.
I do not see much of Otto in him, other than their physical stature. Otto as a freshman wasn't a big time scorer, but did all of the little things, if you recall...got big rebounds, steals, deflections, blocks. Unfortunately, from what I've seen Jamarko is pretty poor on the defensive end .
But, he is clearly the most talented of the guys outside of Jesse and Marcus and I think Patrick feels throwing him in the fire is best for his and the team's LONG TERM development.

Thanks for jerking my memory of Porter, there. He certainly knew how to impact the game in so many ways that didn't show up on the stat sheets. Would you agree: Jamaarko, more offensive minded; Otto, better all around talent--at this point.

Pickett has a great stroke. You could see him making 5 threes in a row in a game. I can't wait to see him as a junior. I also like Blair offensively. He can score in many ways.

I posted when he committed not to expect a whole lot from Pickett his freshman year because he signed with Georgetown so late in July. He was at home while 99% of all other freshman around the country had been on their college campus since late May early June working out with the strength coach, going through team conditioning, and individual workouts with the coaching staff. Very important aspects for freshman development, especially a player like him who is so slight of strength and build and relies heavily on his legs on his jumper.
Pickett will show glimpses throughout this season but Next year is when we will begin to see his true abilities after a full off season of conditioning, strength training and individual workouts with the coaching staff.

When his jumper starts falling, some of the other "problems" will disappear. I love his form, arc and stroke...hes just not calibrated. He seems to be hitting the back of the rim. I think it could be the game speed, he has to adjust. It will come. He has long range capabilities.

He must be AMAZING in practice! His decision making in the game leaves something to be desired.
Pass the ball to Govan!!!

He's young and one wonders about the quality of coaching he's had previously. But his upside is huge and he's got a lot of heart.
Not sure if it came through on TV but after he lost that critical turnover at the end of the game he got subbed for and was absolutely dejected on the bench.

Yeah, I saw that. I think Trey had his hand on his shoulder consoling him. I just think his confidence level is very high for a freshman. It seems to me that he really feels that that he can--and wants to--make a difference. One to watch, for sure.

I don't want to temper Jamorko's confidence or offensive aggressiveness, but I hope he can reduce the turnovers as the year goes along. The team needs players who want the ball and are unafraid to take shots/make plays at important times, but I would like to find a way to see Derrickson take more shots and Pickett at this point. It is all part of letting young players grown up. Not the easiest thing to watch at times but it will pay off in the long run

I want the ball to Govan as much as anyone but Pickett is a finisher at this point. Hopefully he adds dump offs to his game but at this point he needs to settle his shot down, get used to getting to the rim off the dribble and then adding the pass off the pump fake or dribble. He's still young and has time but I hope the shot comes back around this season.

A ton of people here can't see the forest through the trees. I want Pickett and Blair with the ball in their hands in every single clutch situation. They are freshmen, so what. In two years - when this team is ready to be good - they will have the experience to succeed.
Juggy is already our most talented perimeter scorer and creator off the bounce, and Pickett has a chance to develop into an NBA guy. So, Pat's developing them. I don't care if they stub their toe down the stretch in every game they play in this season. I want them with the ball and I want them to have the experience. I'd add Jagan to this list as well, because he should be our starting point guard.

As a few others have alluded to, the silver lining in a rebuilding year is more leeway/minutes for guys that will contribute in the future. They won't be sent to the bench every time they would be on a team with high expectations. If they develop quicker than hoped, expectations rise. If they don't, no harm, no foul. Personally, I'd like to see more minutes for Walker but I'm hoping/expecting that to be the case as the season progresses. As the younger guys improve, I expect to see fewer minutes for Mulmore/Dickerson and more minutes for Jagan. Moving forward, if Jagan can develop into a credible threat from three (take those open looks!!), the team starts to look a bit different.

I don’t really mind that he shoots a lot. If you’re out there and you have a look, get it up. His frame and mobility jump out watching him - he’s so long and moves very well. But man is he raw otherwise. He’s not in the same universe of Otto Porter in terms of polish or ability to compete at this point. His ceiling is the highest of anyone on the roster, but there’s definitely a risk that he goes the way of Copeland and never develops beyond being a guy who looks the part but doesn’t make positive basketball plays. Developing him will be a major early test of this staff.

Let us not forget Patrick wants to win now with the talent he has. He wants them to play relentlessly and take chances. When he said, " who else am I going to give it to?" I believe that was a vote of confidence he has in Jahvon and Jamorko. It sounded like a statement of his evaluation of his players, the style of play he wants, and the culture he is building. These guys are growing. I doubt that we will see the preseason schedule that took place this year. His team this year will make a statement for him, they will earn their playing time, and nobody on this board has to give him approval!
BTW, I don't think Jagan will quit. He made a choice to stay when Patrick was selected. He is a leader and will continue to develop his game.
