Lot of pluses to take from that win, most importantly I would hope JT3 would look at himself and trust his players to press and run like they did in the first half instead of putting the brakes on and pretending that somehow bleeding the clock every possession for 20 minutes won't bite you in the a$$ eventually. That second half was brutal and it wasn't execution, it was absolutely perfect execution of a changed and terrible second half game plans. Let em play coach, they should have proved to you they can do 40 if you'll let them. We did not press in the first half. Tre gave some token pressure, but we did not press. In the first half, we had a lot of crispy sharp movement and passes. In the second, we didn't. It was execution. Well just agree to disagree. Press is probably the wrong word but it wasn't token pressure. It was a 3/4 press and it kept them from even initiating their offense until there were 20 seconds on the clock. It leads to bad offense, missed shots and rebounds (basically exactly what we did coughing up the lead). And if you think that our offense was just well executed in the first half then you were watching a different game. We were in their front court on every single miss no later than 28 seconds. Hell I saw one where we beat the shot clock operator and it said 30. That's a game plan, albeit executed wel, but we only shot 55%, it wasn't transcendent. It was just excellent defense translated into quick easy points by design.

Couldn't be that our consistent stream of sloppy turnovers hampered our offense, could it? Again, see my post during the game. We literally shut it down and put the brakes on with 12 minutes left in the game. It became rebound, sit, plod up, and same old slow shoot with 5 seconds left offense. Turnovers had nothing to do with the conscious choice not to run off missed shots

Pace pace pace.... once our pace on offense slowed our struggles started.... Without a doubt. We look like two totally different teams when we look to run versus look to slow it down. Loved the way we pushed the tempo and got into the paint in the first half. Some of the most enjoyable Hoya basketball I've seen in a long time. Hope it becomes a trend

When we stall the game like that our players get nervous and start making sloppy plays. That was an exciting first half.

I've seen enough out of this team to believe we can start 5-0 in BE play, which hopefully gives us enough momentum to propel us to a home win over nova. Additionally, today shows how valuable it is to have DSR on our team. Lastly, there is much success awaiting kaleb, Marcus, and govan in the future. PS I hope Paul is okay. Totally agree. Also with the concern for White.

Happy that DSR made my prior post look stupid. Yeah, man, every one of your game thread posts except this one looks that way.

Again, see my post during the game. We literally shut it down and put the brakes on with 12 minutes left in the game. It became rebound, sit, plod up, and same old slow shoot with 5 seconds left offense. Turnovers had nothing to do with the conscious choice not to run off missed shots With 12:00 left in the game, Marquette had closed to an eight point gap at 57-49. The pace of play from that point on had nothing to do with MU getting back in the game; they already had done so, thanks to the turnover parade in the first eight minutes of the second half.

I believe/hope that this was the game that serves as a turning point for Govan and Derrickson. Let's not underestimate this Marquette team. They had a ton of motivation to win this game, afterall they are looking at an 0-3 start next week. Those two big dudes are also a handful to defend and they can play. They remind me of the Duke prototype. Yet Derrickson and Govan contained them. That's solid D, my friends. Govan--ooh what poise and knocking down 3's like he is DSR!

And "you're just wrong" that it was token pressure, so where does that leave us?
I guess 2-0 in conference!

I don't know if the execution suffered because we tried to play a slower pace with a big lead or whether it was a let down because we had a big lead or whether it was just that Marquette made some good adjustments and picked up their defensive intensity. I also wonder if Campbell should have played more minutes in the second half.

I don't think we actively try to play stall ball. We just didnt have the intensity in the 2nd half that we had in the 1st half. Its the same story every time.
Sloppy 2nd half play and lack of physical play with sharp passes and cuts led to turnovers and missed shots letting them back in.

Happy that DSR made my prior post look stupid. Yeah, man, every one of your game thread posts except this one looks that way. Nope. This thing was going according to the JT3 handbook. we went 10 minutes with 2 points. We scored once in 15 possessions. Time and again this team fails to put away teams after building big leads. Mea Culpa on DSR but the rest of my posts were spot-on as per usual.

Now I can say more just looking at the box score. We outrebounded them by a significant margin. Jessie got four blocks. Five or so in double figures. Now I can read the rest of this thread.
And yes, 2-0 in the BE, only 16 more conference wins to go!!!

This was a tale of 2 halfs, obviously and I felt when their offense picked-up as they were driving to the basket, often in the 2nd half, I felt that our defense became our offense, which is very encouraging for us in learning to close out tough games. DSR played very unselfishly and let the game come to him. He showed the leadership qualities today, that we've all been looking for from him. All in all a good 2-0 start in conference play and really loved the effort.

Sloppy 2nd half play and lack of physical play with sharp passes and cuts led to turnovers and missed shots letting them back in. I'd say it was the opposite. Copeland and derrickson (I think) threw up back to back 3s really early in the shot clock when it was down to 8 pts late in the game. Also the scoring drought came when Copeland and Cameron started throwing lazy passes that led to easy fast break Layups. Both of them were quite awful in th 2nd half which led to Marquette getting back into the game except for Cameron's 4 point play (other than that it may have been Cameron's worst game)
