We have an incredibly talented team ... - We have the best player in the Big East. Keep your Kris Dunn's -- we don't need his turnovers. Archi is just a poor man's DSR.
- Two sometimes-maligned players look to be able to contribute this year in Reggie Cameron and Bradley Hayes.
- We have three future members of the Big East All-Freshman team on our team ... and there's a decent chance two of them start.
- The other is John Rothstein's personal crush.
- We have the best rising sophomore class in the Big East, most of whom were already good players last year.
- One of them is a lottery pick to be.
- One of them has the nickname of "The Natural" and it's not ironic.
- One of them has been described by at least one NBA scout as a better prospect than the lottery pick.
- One of them was our second most efficient offensive player last year.
- And the only one that didn't play much last year looks like he has his father's work ethic -- and that means I'm betting on him.
Get hyped. Or, as the internet would say GET HYPE!

This fanbase has been kind of dormant for awhile. You can tell by the increasing lack of activity on all Hoya websites during the season and especially the offseason. Five or more years ago there would have been a lot more detailed info and followed up responses about the end of the season banquet, the Kenner League, the play of the team in Italy and the open practice sessions. Now we get so little and that says a lot about the status of the fanbase. On one popular Hoya site the topic that gets the most interest is what lunch people are having.
We get disappointed wondering why our top target recruits don't choose the Gtown program but this fanbase isn't exactly all that into the program itself either it would seem.
If III can finally get an offense going worthy of the players he has I think this could be his best team since Roy's last season. But I'm in the minority I suppose.

I'm fired up to watch this team play. We were spoiled early in JT3's tenure with super effective offenses that were fun to watch. Now it's been 5 years since we have had a Top 30 offense in efficiency. I think this is the year we get back to playing the beautiful game -- lots of skilled guys who can pass and move and shoot.

The fan base has declined over the years and while the athletic department has doubled-down on local interest, there is less enthusiasm outside the Northeast Corridor. Gone are the "fan packs" distributed to the regional clubs and the efforts to spur game watches. 2. Seven years of early exits in March have jaded the casual (small c, not "Casual") Georgetown fans. They're not going to get worked up over Twitter posts or bobbleheads. 3. The reconfiguration of the Big East and the relative anonymity of Fox Sports 1 versus ESPN cannot be discounted.

I think the younger alums are a lot more connected than you give them credit for, they just don't waste their time on ancient things like message boards or blogs.

I love HT and all that DFW has done but this board, in essentially the same format, has been in existence since the 1990s!! I'd be surprised if there were any regular contributors on here of college age. This is an old man's board...everyone on here needs to make peace with that.

This middle-aged fan is hyped. Just bought my tickets for the game against Charlotte at the Hornets' arena. They went on sale today. If other Hoyas on here are looking for tickets, it is both cheaper and you can get better seats if you call the 49ers' ticket office directly (704-687-4949) than going through Ticketmaster. They were very nice and said they would try to accommodate my request to sit behind the Hoyas' bench.

I mean, seriously, DFW, the reconfiguration of the Big East and the television contract signed with Fox Sports absolutely SAVED the Big East and kept Georgetown a relevant college hoops program. I am so happy that Georgetown helped grab the reins, made the best of a bad situation for the non-FBS schools, and didn't allow the program to fall down into the A-10, Colonial, or Patriot League.

Your opinion and DFW's are far from mutually exclusive. All DFW is saying is that compared to the "old" Big East televised prominently on ESPN, the "new" Big East is less dynamic and gets less widespread coverage generally. That doesn't mean it wasn't the very best option available. It just means that it may be one reason for less interest.

As to the main point of the thread, I'm very excited and optimistic. The biggest reason is that I think we have a variety of ways to win games and aren't going to be reliant on one guy or one style or one type of matchup.
I will try my hardest to retain those feelings even if we struggle somewhat (or even mightily) in our brutal early season schedule. We could easily start the year 1-3, but depending on how those games actually go, I may be no less optimistic. I'd be thrilled with a 3-1 start.
I think it's easy to see why the casual fan (by "casual," I don't even mean the general casual sports fan, but rather a Georgetown fan that isn't rabid) wouldn't be excited. The casual fan, likely, is generally interested only in "big" games in the regular season, and those are probably limited to games in which we are both ranked and playing a top-tier team or rival. We have plenty of top-tier and/or rival games this year; but we aren't ranked.
The ranking part is weird. The way the schedule sets up, we play Maryland, Wisconsin, and VCU/Duke all in one "ranking week." So, even if we get a huge win against Maryland, we'll necessarily still be unranked heading into the MSG tournament. If we were to win all three, you'd think we'd debut in the top 10, although that infrequently happens.

It seems oddly quaint for a bunch of predominantly middle aged men to conclude that there is "less interest" by using metrics that aren't particularly well-suited at capturing today's audience (i.e., broadcast ratings) or are highly anecdotal in nature (i.e., message board participation).
