I said when we were going through the Whit turmoil that Whit was just a kid who had no desire to go to college but felt he had to in order to achieve his goal of playing in the NBA. I felt then and feel now that he was just a victim of the NBA's failure to set up a legitimate bball minor league where kids like Whit can go after high school, get paid to play, and eventually, if they are good enough, fulfill their dreams of an NBA career. The current system corrupts the colleges who serve as NBA minor league surrogates and does awful things to kids like Whit who have neither the academic ability nor desire to spend a year or two as "student athletes". So good luck to you Whit and I hope you make it in Miami.

I understand where you are coming from but I have a hard time seeing why anyone who had no desire to attend college would choose a program like GU. There are plenty of other programs that allow their so-called student athletes to just skate by (the UNC fiasco is just one example). GU did not and does not have that rep, so it is an odd choice for a kid who has no interest in academics.

You act as if your point was the largest factor in his decision, I was pointing out that it clearly wasn't. He chose GU despite its academic reputation.

My guess is your are both right. Probably chose GU because of its bball, not academic reputation. GU has a big following among area minority kids and getting a GU bball scholarship is a big deal to them. But when the academic reality set in he crashed and burned. My point is it would be nice if basketball players, like baseball players, had a choice of college or a minor league affiliate of an NBA team.

I fail to see how he's a victim.

MOD NOTE: Thread locked since we are engaged in a narcissistic slapfight rather than discussing the thread topic. Potentially to be reopened later if there is more news regarding the subject of the thread.

The discussion definitely degenerated quickly. But one legit point that should be raised is what is the responsibility of the Coach in such recruiting. Shouldn't the coach have some way to determine if this recruit will really fit at GU as a student/athlete? Talk to high school coach, parents, anybody who really knew the kid before offering the scholarship. Granted if the kid wanted to attend GU badly enough he could probably put up a great front. But I would have thought that JT3, of all people, would have been able to see through that and pass on Whit. When you look at the kids JT3 recruited in that class Whit really stands out as an anomaly.

Also with HS kids, they haven't fully found themselves, maybe they have a hidden character trait that hasn't shown since they've only been focused on bball and haven't had a social life. I think for JT3, Whit was an AI-like character recovery project. On the actual thread tropic, congrats to Greg. I'm sure he has had a hard road and I am glad he has persevered.

Query whether there will be roster openings for guys like Greg if the league tries to resume in Orlando and a bunch of players say "I ain't doing this."

If Greg were to make the NBA, would he be eligible to have his jersey on the wall?
