Nebraska defeated Loyola Marymount in overtime, 50-42, in a late night (or for us on the east coast, early morning) matchup in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, so DePaul will play Loyola Marymount at 1:30 pm EST tomorrow in the seventh-place game.

Hope everyone's Christmas is being filled with meaning, happiness and love.
At the half in Honolulu, DePaul leads Loyola Marymount, 31-29. Seesaw battle so far between two struggling teams playing with a local 8:30 am tipoff.

DePaul loses its sixth straight game, 72-69 to Loyola Marymount (now 4-8) in the seventh place game in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. Looks like the Blue Demons (5-7) are all set for Big East competition.

Think DePaul fans are happy right now? From the DePaul basketball forum, bluedemonsnation.com: Offline Depressed 2 Star Prospect ** Posts: 254 Karma: +5/-12 Time to start the Search for a New Coach Now ! « on: Today at 03:10:42 PM » Looking up and down the schedule this team is destined to go 6-26 , it is time , right now to pull the plug on Oliver Purnell and his super staff . They can't rebound or play an ounce of Defense . Getting thrashed by teams like Lehigh, LMU, and Ohio is nothing compared to what the Big East has in store for this sad group of misfits. Talent wise On paper Depaul should be able to handle these mid major foes, unfornately they are so poorly coached that they just end up getting embarrassed. If Purnell is not fired by mid January expect to see some losses by 30 or 40 points against some of the more talented teams in the Big East. ?

I'm predicting 5-27.

And GW pulls off the upset over Wichita State 60-54, as the Shockers failed to solve the 1-3-1 zone in the second half. Nice win for the Colonials, and that's now four Top 25 teams that have lost so far this week.

And now, let's talk about a basketball program that exemplifies everything Christmas is not, a program that makes you question whether a loving God could exist, the DePaul Blue Demons."

I took a cruise through the other Big East fan forums to see what, if anything, they had to say about the DePaul problems. Interestingly, some of the strongest concerns were voiced by the forums associated with the "new" members of the conference (in particular, at Xavier).
Jean Lenti Ponsetto, the athletic director at DePaul, was a four-sport letter winner at that school, and has received plaudits for her improvement of DePaul's overall athletic programs; she also has numerous relatives (such as her brother, the longtime women's softball coach) on the Blue Demon payroll, so there have been accusations of nepotism. That said, she has been reviled for what she has done with the basketball program. It is inarguable that the playing of games in suburban Rosemont, which is apparently just slightly less convenient than GU's old treks to the Capital Centre, has held the program back; it has also been reported that DePaul was offered free use of United Center for their home games, and turned down that offer. The new arena planned as a part of development at McCormick Place has met with strong community opposition, and costs are increasing for the project.
Oliver Purnell's contract runs through the 2015-2016 season. Lenti Ponsetto has been very strong in her support of Purnell, even after last season. The heat has been turned up by a restive fan base, and as I noted a few days ago, DePaul fans are already speculating as to who will, and should, replace Purnell as head coach; there is even speculation now that he will not last the season.
I would be surprised if DePaul made an in-season change. However, it is hard to believe that DePaul will allow Purnell to coach a fifth and final contract year as a lame-duck. Either they will replace him at the end of the season, or he will get a contract extension. That determination will speak volumes as to what type of program DePaul will accept longterm.
