Stewart Mandel @slmandel Crazy detail in the Syracuse report. Director of basketball ops and others had players' passwords, would email their professors as them.
Ok, THAT's bad.

What a great day! The sun is out in NY and the snow is melting a bit, and now this! I knew they were scum from decades ago, and the chickens have finally come home to roost.

There must be some T-shirt saying in all of this they can make and be happy.

See that glow flashing in the corner of your eye, Jim Boehiem. That's your career dissipation light. It just went into high gear.

Pretty dense reading in the actual report, I'm only through fifteen pages or so thus far. Pretty clear that "student athlete I" that got lots of impermissible benefits was Billy Edelin. Wasn't he a guy the Hoyas recruited pretty hard back in the day? What's a little weird to me is that a lot of the impermissible benefits for Edelin happened around the same time as the 2003 championship run, so not sure why that championship wouldn't be in danger, considering so many other wins have been vacated.

I wish it included 2008-2009, so Connecticut could start claiming the W in the 6OT game.

Does this mean that Georgetown record improves over those years, where we lost to Syracuse?

Think this guy Matt Reynolds (currently Video Assistant for the Boston Celtics), SU class of 2010, might want to update his LinkedIn profile?

Priceless. Simply priceless.

Too much to read while at work but i saw the loss of schollies posted. How does that impact the incoming recruits for next year?

It's unclear, as they have the option to maintain all their scholarships next year and roll the punishment out to 5 years from now. This is actually a decent thing for the NCAA to do, as it allows kids already offered scholarships to keep them. But, knowing the program, you might see kids forced to transfer out to free up their scholarships for better recruits. Is the old "We'd like you to walk on, but the track coach wanted to talk to you about a pole vault scholarship that's available" loophole still a possibility?

For sure, they can force some end-of-benchers out -- and could do it continually over the next four years or just whenever needs arise. But it certainly makes it harder to stow players and develop them over three or four years -- something they've done over the years.

OK, I'm now on p.27 of the full report. This stuff is fascinating. The James Southerland (Student Athlete 7) stuff to get him eligible in the 2011-2012 season is just disgusting. Syracuse's AD should be fired immediately. But the stench goes all the way up to the Provost and Vice Chancellor. It's really bad, highly recommended reading for people that have the time.

On the 'cuse board, someone looked at the scholarship players that had the lowest 3 minute totals over the past few years. Most of them later became important parts of the team. They literally have no margin for error going forward, as every recruit needs to be a hit and be able to contribute quickly.
(cut and paste) 09-10 Southerland Riley Mookie Jones
10-11 Jones Southerland Kieta
11-12 Jones MCW Cooney (rs)
12-13 Cooney Grant G (transfer year)
13-14 BJ Buss Chinoso (rs)

OTL with Bob Ley discussing sanctions with O'Neil, Katz, and Bilas. Bilas still saying nothing has changed with respect to the NCAA. Bilas does say it can't all be on Boeheim but what about AD?Questions length of investigation.

I don't see how the penalties are too light. Who's going to want to play at Syracuse for Boeheim moving forward? The idea of Mike Hopkins being heir apparent has to be over. The school is on probation for 5 years so has to be squeaky clean - led by a coach who has no idea how to be squeaky clean. I think these sanctions are better than a death penalty or anything like that. This sentence will lead to years, perhaps a decade or more of mediocrity.

I am happy that the German language exists and has produced such a deliciously appropriate word to capture my feelings today.
I do think the most serious functional part of the penalty is five year probation. If they have to be much much cleaner for five years, they won't be able to recruit in the same way or the same type of player that they have been recruiting. Just look at our recruiting to see how that goes. You can land talent, but it's an uphill battle.
