I see that, according to their academic calendar, Syracuse is on spring break next week, which means that the students are likely headed elsewhere today. Probably means little opportunity for student protest/comment on the NCAA decision today.
Be safe, hoyadestroya. You are truly behind the enemy lines right now.

From the NCAA press release (www.ncaa.com/news/ncaa/article/2015-03-06/syracuse-did-not-control-athletics-basketball-coach-failed-monitor)
Penalties and measures prescribed by the panel are below:
• Five years of probation from March 6, 2015 through March 5, 2020. • Vacation of all wins in which ineligible men’s basketball students played in 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2010-11 and 2011-12 and ineligible football students played in 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07. The public decision contains additional details. • Fine of $500 per contest played by ineligible students. • The school must return to the NCAA all funds it has received to date through the former Big East Conference revenue sharing for its appearances in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. • Suspension of the head basketball coach from the first nine conference games of 2015-16. • Reduction of men’s basketball scholarships by three for the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years. If the school has already executed scholarship offers for the 2015-16 year, the school may begin the four-year penalty with the 2016-17 year. • Reduction in the number of permissible off-campus recruiters from four to two during June 1, 2015 through May 31, 2017. • The panel also accepted the school’s self-imposed postseason ban for the 2014-15 season, but noted that self-imposition of penalties after the conclusion of infractions hearings does not influence the outcome. • Additional self-imposed penalties can be found in the public decision.
So Boeheim misses the first half of the ACC season next year; watch the ACC give them a schedule with two games each against Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Clemson and Boston College. The scholarship reduction (three per year) may cost the Orange a shot at Thomas Bryant. Look forward to seeing how many wins get deducted from Boeheim's total.

And the decision specifically bars from the school from counting the vacated wins in any "coaching milestone" recognition. Not clear how many wins will be vacated (I'm sure someone will do the math), but it's significant. In addition to the scholarship reductions, they can only have two off-campus recruiters over the next two years. One, presumably is Jimmy, so that will make it hard for them to see a lot of folks. Significant too. The NCAA could have come down harder, but this is fairly significant.

I know you can only have 13 scholarship players per season; is there a limit on scholarships you can give for one year? Or does it just mean they can only have 10 scholarship players on the roster each of those 4 seasons? They only play 8 or 9 guys anyway.

Queries: Does Boeheim stay around longer to avoid sticking his successor with a barren cabinet? Or does he leave anyway in a year or two?

The big thing on the loss of scholarships, since SU only rotates seven or eight players usually, is that they cannot afford to take any "projects" now. The full impact of the reduction of scholarships may not be felt for a few years.
They might have been better off with a lesser reduction of scholarship and a two-year ban.
The report hammers Boeheim. This is a big censure of his stewardship. Can't wait to hear how he spins it.

A post-season ban for next year would have really made this all complete, but the penalties are pretty harsh in and of themselves. The whole report, however, traces most (if not all) of the problems back to Boeheim.
He needs to go.

Could you imagine how you would feel if III did the things outlined in the report? I'd be calling for his head. I'm sure the school would fire him by the end of the day.

Can't wait for Jimmy to play victim with this one. Here are your choices sir:
1. You are a complete criminal in NCAA terms;
2. You are a myopic as the nickname we have hung on you.
Choice is yours...

What I'm most interested in is if, whenever Magoo finally does leave/get forced out, who takes over? Will it be a Roy Williams>Bill Self smooth transition, or will there be a Bill Gutheridge/Matt Doherty type interregnum. What's our old pal Esh up to these days? Does he have a relationship with Syverud?

The fanbase, and many within the university, will push hard to spin this as a series of unintentional misunderstandings and confusion; they will want to appeal each of the sanctions, and/or petition in a year for reductions for good behavior. Will be a big test of how much power and control Chancellor Kent has.
