Nice find, ss. One of JT3's goals this season should be not to be asked by the national media on this Q&A's next year about last season's first weekend loss to (insert next year's NCAA Tournament Conderella).

Liz Clarke has a major error in the article that misses the bigger issue. She says he played 6 games in his sophomore season at UCLA, but that was his junior season. The issue is whether that counts as a lost season of eligibility, and he only has one season of eligibility left. That question complicates the application of the year in residency transfer rule.
If the NCAA says he only has one season to play and that he has to be at Georgetown for a full year before he can play, then he only gets 60% of a season if he plays this year. One of those two rules needs a waiver. If they count last season as a lost year of eligibility, they should let him play a full season this time. If they don't count last season as a full season, and he is eligible next season, then it's fair to make him sit out the first semester of this season.

bmartin, I agree with you. The problem with the NCAA rules is that if followed to the letter, it results in an incredibly unfair result.
If Josh Smith transferred without playing those 6 games, he'd be immediately eligible this year AND have another year to play, if he desired. Thus, he would have had 4 semesters of eligibility at Georgetown. Instead, if he cannot play until after the first semester AND he loses the year of eligibility, he will only have 1 semester at Georgetown.
In my mind, the rules are inherently unfair if transferring after 6 games is the difference between 4 full semesters of eligibility and one. I know that Smith arguably could get two semesters if he waited until 2014-2015, but then he would basically have to be out of the game for 2 years, which is also unreasonable.
The only fair thing in my opinion is for him to get to play in November, or alternatively, to get another year of eligibility.

If the NCAA were to determine that last season counted as a full season, I would think that Josh would have the option of essentially "redshirting" this season, and have a full year of eligibility left for next season.

Frazier,
I think you are right, I just don't think that's fair in the sense that it basically forces Josh to sit out from November 25, 2012 (his last UCLA game) to the first game in November 2014. That's almost 2 full years of not playing because of the NCAA's silly rules, which seems very unfair.
To me, the fact that playing 81 minutes in 6 games should result in such a huge disparity between the same scenario without those 81 minutes is unfair. I understand that a strict application of the NCAA rules might lead to this conclusion, but if so, the NCAA's transfer rules need to be changed.

Fair is seldom used anymore in connection with the NCAA. A more appropriate word might be random or arbitrary. With multiple litigants pursuing grievances it seems that this organization is headed for major overhaul.

Part of the problem is that basketball stretches over 2 semesters, which most sports do not, so it makes it hard to dock a bball kid only one semester of eligibility, while a soccer or lacrosse player playing in a few games would be credited with a full season and lose a full year of eligibility. But the NCAA rules make you sit out 2 academic semesters, so it certainly seems harsh to apply the letter of the law here - although if Josh is determined to only have one year of eligibility left, could he use it for the Spring 2014 semester and then the Fall 2014 semester? Don't know why you would want to, but . . .

It's a tweet from Liz Clarke:
NCAA clears Josh Smith to play for #Hoyas this semester; the 6-10 UCLA transfer should be in the lineup for Nov 8 opener vs Oregon in Seoul

Seasons of Competition waiver makes last season for Josh not count at all. Forget 3 semesters at Georgetown, Josh gets FOUR.

From goodman
"Josh Smith COULD be a major factor for the Hoyas if in shape. JT3 told me last week he came in able to go 2 min. straight. Now up to 10"
Not a great sign if true. If he will help needs to get 20mins at a minimum.

So Josh and Grant Gibbs of Creighton both were granted eligibility. Ya think the NCAA wants the new Big East to succeed. Great news!
