See, this is what I'm talking about in the other thread? The board has basically turned into a marketplace for people to approach one another and take a private conversation offline. I think we need a Hoyatalk constitutional convention where some of these rules are revisited.

Which of the gentlemen from Virginia shall be our Thomas Jefferson?

I think we need a Hoyatalk constitutional convention where some of these rules are revisited. The problem is there isn't any other story to report here other than what the school and coach reported. Allowing people to post mere rumor here does a disservice to the student and the program, not to mention destroying any credibility this site has. I do have to applaud your use of hyperbole - you're right: every discussion thread here has someone asking people to PM them "the secret."

I think we need a Hoyatalk constitutional convention where some of these rules are revisited. The problem is there isn't any other story to report here other than what the school and coach reported. Allowing people to post mere rumor here does a disservice to the student and the program, not to mention destroying any credibility this site has. I do have to applaud your use of hyperbole - you're right: every discussion thread here has someone asking people to PM them "the secret." Three responses: First, there clearly is a "a story to report" because there is an event that happened in the world (Josh was suspended for vague academic reasons), and there are additional underlying facts that people here want to know. Whether any of our posters know the the facts anybody's guess, but you can't say there's no "story" at all. The fact that the University and the coach won't tell us the story has no bearing on whether one exists. Second, I'm not sure allowing rumors to be posted would destroy this site's credibility because I don't think this site, HoyaTalk, has any credibility to begin with, independent of the credibility of each individual poster. That's not meant to be an insult to the board. It's just the nature of being an open discussion forum rather than a news outlet. If a bunch of kids go out in Red Square and start flyering and chanting in support of some nonsense phony cause, no one will respond "Red Square has lost its credibility." Red Square is just a place where people speak. Same thing here. If 80% of posters come on here and sling rumors, hearsay, and conjecture, so be it. We're all adults, and we can believe or not believe whatever we want of it. Conversely, people who post stories with some kind of supporting authority will always be more credible. And posters whose rumors prove accurate (when there's any way to verify them) will be more credible. The rest of it will just be noise, but it's the kind of noise that I think many of us would enjoy. As far as disserving the program and the student, this is big-time Division I sports, and they're big boys. If the program or the players can't handle the fact that people talk about them (sometimes inaccurately), they're in the wrong place. And if they want accurate information out there, they can always provide it. I think it's a generally accepted proposition that McDonough could stand to be a little more forthcoming with its fans/donors anyway. This isn't to be argumentative. If the rules stay as they are, so be it. I obviously enjoy the site either way. But given that there seems to be a discussion on the matter, I figured I'd weigh in.

Strummer - I never said there was "no story" - of course there are more details, but this is not the venue to report them, nor do the posters here have the "right" to access a student's academic record / information in this venue. And no, we aren't changing those rules.
As far as playing with the "big boys" - the program did provide accurate information: Josh Smith is in eligible due to an academic issue. There's no reason for any strummer, Big Dog, or Dan McQ to have access to any more information than that.

Personally, I think we have too many threads on this board.
Can't we combine all of these discussions into one? "Why Hoyatalk Sucks: How Dan & DFW Are Worse Than Hitler and Stalin Combined...HITLIN!"
While we're at it, can we add a tutorial on how to properly use the Quote button? And can we ban members who post "+1" instead of using the handy "Like" button?
PM me for details.

Thanks for the post. Good news assuming he gets into shape. Can he train with the team during the season or does the suspension preclude that?

Smith has been practicing with the team during his suspension.
