Hopefully we can copy the 2007 model and after beating Belmont, now beat an ACC team in the round of 32! Let's Go Hoyas! I like this post very much

Great game!!! We never got flustered: this team seems to have JTIII's personality... I'd agree with that, but I think they have a bit more fire than JTII.

We did to Belmont what we did to Notre Dame. Belmont's inside play and passing was better than Nd's so they were around longer.

This is probably the best I'll ever feel about a first round win. Control of the game throughout, never really felt like Belmont had a chance, and after four years we finally win an NCAA tourny game after having everyone pick against us. Just great job by everyone and exciting first round result.

What was our team's song in the 2006-2007 season? Murder Murder by Juelz Santana........will always be a classic

Tarik is following the Caps on their road trip. The Maryland beat has dried up, so they moved Liz to Hoyas' coverage. Will miss Tarik as we move through the Tourney. No way! No more player write-ups by Tarik the rest of the season...

Solid overall, JTIII strategized well and they executed (although I'm not sure I understand why some were so high on Belmont). Gave away a few too many possessions on both ends of the floor, but they closed the deal nicely.
I hope Hollis rediscovers his game on Sunday.

Here's where Pomeroy's study of 3PFG defense goes wrong - at least today - you have to be able to make cross-court passes, you have to be able to get the shot off without it being swatted away a la Whittington, you have to be able to pass the ball to the wing. Georgetown's defense defends those things. Belmont ended up at 37% and I still think the team did a fantastic job of defending the three. See this is where stats are meaningless. Belmont shot 37%, basically their season average, and took plenty of attempts (27) but anyone who watched the game knows the three point shot was ineffective for them. Sometimes I really think basketball is over-analyzed. It's less that stats are meaningless, and more that the stats tracked don't account for everything that happens on the court. Georgetown's length was clearly affecting Belmont's shot selection from behind the arc. I can think of multiple instances where a Belmont player caught a ball behind the arc looking like he would put it up only to realize a hand was immediately in his face. That doesn't count as an attempt, but against the Hoyas last year you can guarantee there would have been more attempts.

Awesome game by Jason today, great to see after he took so much criticism from the board lately. Otto, Henry, even Nate had really good games. Markel was steady, Whit and Hops filled their roles well.
Terrific D, as others have said - and, when it's working, our offense is really beautiful to watch. Great atmosphere watching at Black Finn, too.
I follow the ACC and have seen NCS a bunch of times this year. They are underseeded and on a given day can beat anyone. They deserved the win over UNC in the ACC tourney but were hurt by just a couple of dumb plays and iffy calls at the end. Guarding CJ Leslie and sharpshooter Wood will be keys. How tightly the game is called and fouls could hurt or help us, too.

Perimeter defense minus a few missed rotations was solid. Thought the big thing was limiting second chance points and attacking the rim on offense instead of relying on our own perimeter game. Clark looks to have shaken off the poor BET, and Sims and Porter continued to be extremely strong on the offensive end. Greg was a monster on D, we didn't let their token pressure bother us one bit. Strong showing overall and proud of the guys for getting the first one under their belts.

If ESPN's box score is right right, Belmont was 11-27 (41%) on 2's. On the year, they shot 55%. Hoyas were 25-37 (68%) inside the arc. Defensive rebounding (this is more likely to be wrong) also looks strong.

Actually, Pomeroy's analysis covered that. He pointed out that teams DO have a significant amount of control over how many 3's get ATTEMPTED, his point was that they have little control over what percentage of those attempted go in. Belmont shot 27 three pointers, 4 more than their average. They shot above what Pomeroy argued was the mean. Did you think they were effective from outside, or do you think they were well defended from three?

Almost a completely solid game with a few exceptions that can (hopefully) be corrected. Really need Hollis' shooting eye to return. Also Nate cannot have the periods of brain freeze that he seems to get every now and then. Henry needs to finish consistently. Still feel good about NC State after getting past this game.

Georgetown contested the perimeter well, but Belmont actually shot a lot better from three than Davidson did in 2008.
The key today was contesting threes without giving up penetration twos and free throws.
And having a very efficient offense that got high percentage shots on almost every possession.

Belmont was more effective from outside than they were at anything else.

I don't even think it's that the stats tracked don't account for everything, I don't think Pomeroy looked at some of the more important stats in this area - steals / turnovers (Belmont's cross court passes didn't work so well), rebounding % after a 3 point shot, whether the two point defense degraded because the defense was stretched, etc...

The middle of our zone was a mother#@$%^&* BEAR TRAP today.
They couldn't do jack inside the arc.
Great defense, Hoyas!!

Defensively we played ok in my book. Was a little upset that Ian Clark and Hanlen got as many open looks as they did. But what I thought was gonna happen in watching Belmont did. They had to take a ton of time just to find a shot. Defensively they had no chance guarding us...too small all around. Jenkins played great for them.
When Jason took that first drive off the dribble and made the lay-up for our 1st points...I felt that even if they made a run he wasn't gonna let us lose. Then it was reconfirmed when he splashed the 3 next time down.
