Right or wrong, that's just how it is. And PA's write their own shotsheets and anchors read them almost verbatim on-air. I'm Ron . . . . Burgundy?

Morning after thoughts:
1. Jason Clark is INSANE this year offensively.
2. Henry is just short of number 1.
3. All you need to know about Hollis is Coach's postgame quote: "Hollis knew it was going in when we came out of the timeout."
4. Actually, the best part of Hollis' game last night was his defense and work on both the offensive and defensive boards.
5. The only times the Hoyas were not in control last night was when they rushed their offense (or did not rush, as in the case of the botched post-timeout play). Both Nate's TOs came from rushed plays, and late in the game when they lost the lead they took rushed shots. Nate's offensive game will come and he does too many things (rebounding, setting screens, passing) that are essential to the offense to simply lose faith and write him off.
6. While there were a lot of correctable mistakes, they were virtually all errors of commission, not omission. That is a good thing.
7. Both Otto and Greg had forgettable shooting games, but they each had clutch shots and played great D.
8. Markel gets better every game.
9. Who thought a Hoya team would be so effective in a zone defense?
10. TEN (10!) "Hoyas Win!!!" from Rich. Only 1 less than the Hoyas' game turnover total - this team values the basketball much better than the past few years.

Props to Hollis for hitting that shot. Not since jwall and possibly sapp his junior year have we had a guy who steps up and calmly makes that shot.

And two of those three things- passing and setting screens- can be done effectively by any decent high school player. Rebounding I'll give you, but he certainly didn't do much of that yesterday (2 in 14 minutes). Visually, you can just tell he doesn't belong out there- he seems stiff and isn't moving well while the rest of the offense has been terrific with off ball movement. I'm just getting tired of his offensive contributions being him setting screens on the perimeter and making unremarkable passes from the wing back to the top of the key.

I wouldn't write him off just yet, but I agree it's a little over-the-top to praise his passing and screen-setting (especially since his passing last night at least was egregiously awful). I say let him use the rest of the OOC schedule to try to get on track - if he's still this horrendous once the Big East season starts, it's time to reevaluate his role.

Although we haven't seen much of Hopkins, he looked comfortable having things run through him at the high post last night, and did made a nice aggressive move toward the hoop(despite the questionable offensive foul call). He seems to have a good grasp of the offense just like the other freshmen, hopefully he keeps working and will be a factor this season, and a valuable Hoya the rest of his time here.

Jason Clark all I can say is that i never expected the leap in his game this year on both sides of the ball. His ballhandling against pressure keeps me asking is that really Jason? And yes he still will get beat going to his left in man, kind of a cheap foul at the end, can't really blame him on that.
Zone defense which we all know has been very sieve like the last three years continues to improve. Still don't know how much of that was them or us but give em credit. The one change in the 2-3 zone other than length and personnel that was evident last night was that we played it very conservatively, very little trapping and minimal ball pressure. I have always felt that for the last three years when we have gone zone we have played it with man to man principles, way too over agressive, allowing for penetration almost at will. Also good to see the matchup zone used with some success along with improvement in the 3/4 court zone pressure.
I'm starting to get very impressed. Still alot of work to do before now and L'ville on the 28th

Exactly. I believe the "producer" of those highlights approached that game totally expecting a Bama win. Highlights are identified and market DURING the game. Perhaps one guy chose highlights AND wrote script. Probably a young kid, maybe even an intern, who could have been a grad of Bama... or maybe a Hoya Hating Cuse alum. The result was pretty clear that producer/editor had no idea that GU is as good as we are and was caught by surprise. Embarrassing. Or, for you conspiracy theorists, it was yet another attempt to try to put the nail in the BE coffin.. as ESPN has been trying to do since we turned down their TV contract last Spring. I cut highlights at ESPN for two years. Trust me, the PA (production assistant) cutting the game is a recent college grad who knows nothing about either team. They did all of their "research" for the game this evening prior to the highlight meeting at 6. When a ranked team plays an unranked team, the highlight is always skewed more to the unranked team because producers and highlight supervisors (hi-supes) beat it into your head that viewers want to see how the "better" team did, regardless of the outcome. Right or wrong, that's just how it is. And PA's write their own shotsheets and anchors read them almost verbatim on-air. I wish people could just observe what goes on in screening for just one day and they would never be upset at what plays get put into a highlight ever again. The PA's in charge of these games rarely know any more about the teams in the game they're cutting than the average person and the hi-supes, for the most part, are so worried about making sure highlights get cut, mossed in the rundown and anchors getting their shotsheets. that the last thing they can worry about is making sure there are more Georgetown plays in a five-six play highlight. All in all, don't take it as a sign of disrespect. It's just how things are up there. Deacon, How did you manage with all of the Syracuse grads rolling around Bristol? Must have been torture...

Do we have a new DC 3? Jason averaging 18ppg, Hollis 14, and Henry 13 early on in the season. Lets hope they keep it up. Hollis is also pulling in over 6 rpg. Impressive stuff.

Tons of Syracuse grads work there, but very few openly root for 'Cuse basketball. You know the Pats, Giants, Celtics, Lakers, Jets, Yankees, Red Sox, Cowboys, etc ... fans because they openly root for them. 'Cuse basketball, not so much. The person in charge of screening is a 'Cuse grad, but you'd never know it.

I'm sorry for the double post, but did I just write that Henry is averaging 13 points a game?! Along with 5 boards and 4 assists?!

Show me my "over-the-top" praise please. I simply pointed out the things he usually does well in the offense. Many of them do not fall in the offensive point total category. Not trying to say he is playing at top efficiency and clearly there were times last night where a drop step move would have been a better choice for him.

We have to be the most Alley-ooped against team in the country with St. Johns being a close 2nd after that beat down bye Kentucky.

Who is this guy named Sims?!! From the early turn around jumper to his driving the lane to running the court to cleanly blocking shots to reverse dunks, I didn't know that guy. What a game by Henry and turn around. He is playing like many always thought he could.

One word we have never had to this degree: balance. Everybody is contributing, and we don't lose much when subs come in. Amazing. I remember reading some posters early on suggesting that we should use more zone this year. Good point. Love the unselfish leadership from Jason and Henry that RDF wrote about. Maybe it turns out that they were always great leaders waiting for their turn? I'm not overly concerned about Nate. He's already sitting a lot, and I trust III to know when and how to use him. I thought one of his fouls last night should have been a no-call, but there are probably 5-7 called fouls I might say that about in every game. He did draw two important Bama fouls early and, despite, his ugly turnovers he snagged a key rebound late and made a beautiful assist down the lane. I'm OK if he keeps starting and gets subbed out if he isn't doing well, and I'm OK if Otto starts and Nate becomes a 6th man. We have such good balance it doesn't matter that much, though I think Nate's strength may be important to some matchups and Otto's fluidity more important to others.
