Good God that was an amazing game. Loved the way we toughed out a very difficult win on the road against a good team. Some thoughts below:
-- I'd like to credit our zone defense. It did a lot, especially in terms of our hands--I think we have more active hands on skip passes and do a better job swiping at balls when entered into the post than at any other point in III's tenure. But I think a lot of its success had to do with Bama's cluelessness in attacking it. In the first half, they did nothing but chuck it around the perimeter. In the second, they hit some 3's and did a better job getting it into the middle, but several of those 3's that Lacey hit were contested looks. There were very few occasions where I thought they got a good look. I do give a ton of credit to III for sticking with our secondary defense because it was working so well.
-- Henry. The mindset change is a 180. Yes he's doing a lot of stuff out there he didn't do before. A lot of that stuff--the blocks, the rebounding, the drives--I think he always had. What he didn't have was the mentality that he can do what he wants out there. When Green picked up his 4th, Henry knew he could go right at his backup and he did. And even though he missed on the last couple possessions, I still am impressed that he was willing to take those shots at the crucial moments.
-- Hollis. Money. Such a huge shot. Love that he and Jason have already hit daggers this year.
-- The youngsters struggled, all of them. Otto took the first bad shot I think he's taken all year, Markel couldn't get anything to drop, Nate played passively because of his fouls. Greg I thought played really well--strong on the boards and good on defense. But they'll all be better for it in the long run. Otto, Greg, and Jabril had a big part in what I thought was one of the best defense and rebounding stretches we've had in 3 years.
-- Can we stop setting up for 3's 2 feet behind the line? If we could just take that 3 at the line, I'd be much happier.

I don't know about that. ESPN cut away from the Memphis game so us West Coasters could watch Stanford - OK State. Someone from the TV side of things can speak to this, but I think there are different issues about cutaways if you are in the dominant market of a game (e.g., SF for Stanford) than the national feed. I should have been more specific. I am in LA. It was an egregious decision.

might get lost in the shuffle, but I thought Greg calmly canning that 3 ball mid-way through the 2nd half was HUGE.

On the road, a win is a win is a win. No matter how you get it. Always a beautiful thing. If we can repeat against Memphis at home, we are very well set up heading into conference play. We'd pretty much be guaranteed an NCAA berth even with a .500 conference record.
If posters are saying that refs were terrible to our disadvantage, I disagree. We got the majority of 50/50 calls, which was surprising to me since we were on the road.
Henry, a revelation!
Clark onions.
Hollis onions.
Nate, my man, what is going on?

The SportsCenter Highlight package looked like ESPN was expecting a Bama victory. All Bama highlights, until Hollis with the HUGE three! And they said "Georgetown hanging around and hanging around", didn't we lead most of the game?Exactly. I believe the "producer" of those highlights approached that game totally expecting a Bama win. Highlights are identified and market DURING the game. Perhaps one guy chose highlights AND wrote script. Probably a young kid, maybe even an intern, who could have been a grad of Bama... or maybe a Hoya Hating Cuse alum. The result was pretty clear that producer/editor had no idea that GU is as good as we are and was caught by surprise. Embarrassing. Or, for you conspiracy theorists, it was yet another attempt to try to put the nail in the BE coffin.. as ESPN has been trying to do since we turned down their TV contract last Spring.

Depending at which box score you look at we had 10 or 11 turnovers. Another good showing valuing the ball for a young team. JTIII's teams have always turned the ball over. Even the 2007 team which offset the turnovers by grabbing an insane portion of offensive rebounds. When we continue to run the offense as its meant to be run with hard cuts and firm screens and value the ball we are a very dangerous offensive team. This year's team isn't relying on shooting percentage to win games. Alabama is an excellent defensive team; elite in the nation. Even so I thought we ended up with a lot of good looks throughout the game. Even on a clearly off shooting night, we still pulled out the win, mainly by valuing the ball in the second half.
Defensively our zone looked very good against an anemic Alabama offense. Again though, we looked very good in a tight disciplined zone tonight, which is what was needed. If we advance to be able to be aggressive and active in our zone with our length, we could be rather intimidating.
Bottom line: Good win against a good team in a hostile environment...and we still could get a lot better as the season moves on. Nice.

No, they had won 24 straight at home... they also had a lengthy home winning streak against nonconf oppts going back a few years. Sorry, that's what I meant

Had to add my 2 cents to the discusssion: -Great win - I have been to all the home games so far and its clear, as has been mentioned above, that our height and length can really bother opponents offense and disrupt their sets - I am struck by the team's calm given that they have 10 underclassmen, that bodes well for this season and the future - This is the 1st time in the last few years that I don't worry when anyone on the court has the ball - they can all make shots and they can all pass - The team's chemistry is special - If this is the 10th best team in the Big East, this year's Big East is the best conference ever

Hollis's GW jumper # 3 on top ten on SC. Mitchell's goal tend of Sims's shot # 7 (I think).
Unfortunately, for whatever reason, AFN Sports has removed from our TV lineup and only get SC on AFN Extra. WTF!!

Really enjoying watching this team play--but already knew I would--but didn't expect the type of composure/toughness from them this early in year. Impressive leadership from Coaching Staff and SR's---who I'm very happy for and proud of. Jason Clark and Henry Sims are doing what was not only needed--but lacking. They are not trying to be heroes, they are just making plays and showing leadership by making the right play--Jason's offensive output was huge--just as Henry's was tonight and against Memphis--but in critical possessions in both games--Henry passed to Jason (Memphis) and Jason passed to Hollis (tonight). That's a great example to set and winning basketball.
III deserves a lot of credit and loved his use of timeouts tonight--which I've not always been a fan of in past--but he did a great job and love that he let the guys play out that last possession.
The zone defense/length of this team is really going to be a factor as we see the team improve/grow. Great to see a big team on court and confidence in players.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE that III is yanking guys after silly plays or poor play. That isn't to say you give up on a kid--but you need them to realize that certain lapses aren't going to be tolerated. Too many other options to utilize.
Enthusiasm from the bench was great to see. Call me corny but I love that FR always have their warmups off and are in full uniform on the bench and are into the game as much as the guys on the court. LOVE THAT. That has been happening in past too--but for these guys to be extremely animated and fired up--reminds me of PE JR on bench.
Great win and just glad this year's playing out as most of us expected--in terms of enjoyment in watching the games not just for entertainment but also growth of young team coming together and going to keep improving. Just has a different feel then past 3 years and for that I'm very thankful!

RDF, good point on the enthusiasm from the bench. I noticed that too. Trawick and especially Hopkins are really really into the game. Hopkins was like that for the Memphis game too.

Or, for you conspiracy theorists, it was yet another attempt to try to put the nail in the BE coffin.. as ESPN has been trying to do since we turned down their TV contract last Spring. I cut highlights at ESPN for two years. Trust me, the PA (production assistant) cutting the game is a recent college grad who knows nothing about either team. They did all of their "research" for the game this evening prior to the highlight meeting at 6. When a ranked team plays an unranked team, the highlight is always skewed more to the unranked team because producers and highlight supervisors (hi-supes) beat it into your head that viewers want to see how the "better" team did, regardless of the outcome. Right or wrong, that's just how it is. And PA's write their own shotsheets and anchors read them almost verbatim on-air. I wish people could just observe what goes on in screening for just one day and they would never be upset at what plays get put into a highlight ever again. The PA's in charge of these games rarely know any more about the teams in the game they're cutting than the average person and the hi-supes, for the most part, are so worried about making sure highlights get cut, mossed in the rundown and anchors getting their shotsheets. that the last thing they can worry about is making sure there are more Georgetown plays in a five-six play highlight. All in all, don't take it as a sign of disrespect. It's just how things are up there.

I hope we can carry this feeling of being an underdog throughout the entire season because of how we were projected in the preseason. Seems to be this feeling of "we're better than people think we are" that fuels a fire in a lot of our players. Hopefully it remains that way even if we keep winning big games.

The Bay Area contingent did their work. Hoya Saxa to all. Hoyas in the top 25 next week!!! I'd love to partying with those guys right now. We had a very good time tonight. McBricks is still undefeated.

Wow! I got home from work, flipped on the tv, and the first thing I see is Hollis draining the 3 to win it. I guess if I had to pick a play to watch that would be it. What a win!
On the other hand, I don't think we should start thinking we are at Kentucky/Ohio St level. Alabama was a solid team albeit with some key deficiencies (i.e. can't shoot 3).
Finally, I would like to throw it out there that we have seemed to start strong in OOC every year with a key OOC win or 2 in every season since Roy and Jeff beat Duke for the first time (only exception being the final four year when we started 4-3). I think everyone needs to be realistic about their big east expectations here. We will be playing Alabama quality and better on many nights in the big east. I would not be surprised if we have some stumbles along the way and end up at 9-9 or 10-8.
Anyways, great win and I can't wait to see more
