Like this better than trying to pick off JUCOs and transfers; keeps local kids happy and there's always a chance they could blow up into something good.
Welcome Jerrelle!

A google search of JB produces a myspace webpage with his age as 21. Can that be right? Anyone have information on that? I don't tend to give any credence to myspace but just curious...
I hope this doesn't impact Latavious, but as others have said, kid has got to qualify first, so if you have the extra schollies, why not pick up a big body just in case. Judging from his pictures, he doesn't seem to be rail-thin - more shredded than a julienne salad

I think it is fair to recognize that not everyone is going to be able to log significant pt when you have 13 scholarships, and recruiting players who are aware of their role (VS) and/or local (JB) to be practice/developmental players is in line with that point of view. It would be nice to be scooping up leftover McDonald's AA's, but right now they just need bodies, and these most recent signings at least have some upside/incentive to stick around for a few years. Then again, we might have thought the same about Wattad/Spann/Thornton (the others at least had some reason to think they should be contributing more based on their press clippings). Co-sign....but Spann and Thornton were top 100 players.

Guru, have you seen him play? Anyone seen him play? I would some description from anyone who has seen him. Have not seen him play but have heard really good things from those who have. A very solid four-year player who may be able to contribute sooner than we might think.

since when does josh barr break news like this before one of our posters? i just realized that i was one of the guys hoping for the hoyas to pick up guys nobody had really heard of (john wallace) and build with them AS WELL as the highly touted kids so by definition i need to like this kid besides being a great player i hope that he doesnt want to run away after 2 years of not being a starter

I think the team's implosion is directly responsible for the kinds of kids we've signed the last two days. Hardworking kids who were not highly ranked/recruited. They are not DIVAS. They are TEAM guys.
Seems like JT3 wants kids who will buy into the system, put the work in to understand it and to improve, will accept coaching, will be delighted to be at GU, will maintain positive attitudes for 4 years, and will be good students too. Not kids who have one eye on the NBA their entire time on the hilltop.
These two may not make big contributions as Frosh, but they could well be solid, four year competitors -- who won't leave early and won't transfer, and won't whine about riding the pine.
Just guessing of course, but that is how it looks to me.

Not too excited about this kid. Glad to have him on the team, but he is an end of the bench guy at best. Do not expect much from him anytime soon.
"i just realized that i was one of the guys hoping for the hoyas to pick up guys nobody had really heard of (john wallace)"
Jonathan Wallace was the exception, not the rule when it goes to signing extremely under the radar kids. 99% of the time it does not work. Wallace was a 1%er.

Is he a big in the real sense of the word? I know he's listed at 6'8, but is he skinny or is he an inside guy? I think the signing is fine. We need guys that are willing to get after it, and that will push other guys to match that intensity. The way people are describing him right now sounds like the way those who were pushing for Olasawere were talking. Except this kid is bigger, which is a plus.

The coach up here at Siena - who has done kinda well the last few years - said recently that recruiting is not just about pulling in all the highly ranked players you can get, it is like a puzzle, figuring out just what pieces you need to make a whole. These 2 recruits seem like nice pieces of the puzzle.

Favorite quote from the article-- "jump shot of a guard and the power of a linebacker." Sounds like the type of kid we need. Welcome Jerrelle--I like the signings so far......if we can land Latavious with the guys we are bringing in, we will be in VERY good shape for next season. Congrats to the staff so far on working to find the right kinds of players.......now we'll see how things come together.

Gotta admit, not real impressed with somebody whose only other offers are Old Dominion and Longwood. At least Sanford had high majors after him (even if they were bottom feeders in their conference like Iowa and Georgia).
Being objective, signing two guys like this in the spring appears to be an act of desperation. Are either of them going to help in 2009-2010? If not, then why not hold the schollies for more talented kids in the class of 2010 and beyond?
Seems to me like JT III wants to have bodies for practice and competition for what appeared to be a relatively thin group of players coming back next year. That's fine, and understandable, especially when you know you're getting only 1 more year of Monroe. However, recruiting "late bloomers" like this leads to a lot of transfers like we've seen during JT III's reign. I don't expect much from Sanford or Bennimon, but I hope I'm wrong.
We've got our role players. Now do the hard part and go sign up LaTavious, Roscoe, Jelan Kendrick, guys like that with real high major talent.

Omar was a very early signee (he actually came without a scholarship offer) and so were Rivers and Macklin. If anything I think the late signee would have a much clearer view of where he will fit in the program so will come in with his eyes wide open. But yes, I think some of this is scrambling to fill some unexpected voids that have opened up over the past 13 months. Thank God Monroe chose to stay - I think that could end up being one of the big moments in Hoya hoops history.

I have no insight into young brother Benimon’s talent level, but I’m amazed that some posters who’ve likely never seen him have already put limitations on what they think he’ll do as a player at GU. 4th. team All Met + under the radar = “end of the bench at best”. It’s almost like they never heard of Jonathan Wallace. Or Gene Smith. Or Charles Smith. Or Don Reid, among others. Those posters may be right, but I hope he comes in, develops, and surprises people. Welcome, Jerrelle.
