Pitt starters (minus Blair) for the most part are logging heavy minutes today since the game never got out of hand. That could be an advantage for us with 2 extra days of rest by comparison.

Yes, we have to have payback for that defeat in the BET last year. Pitt is a very scrappy team, so we cannot have a let down from the UConn game.
GO HOYAS!!!!
Happy New Year to all!

I can see the Hoyas playing a fair amount of zone here. As will be the case all year, foul trouble for Monroe will spell trouble for Georgetown. Blair's tendency to take it right at people is a concern but it's just as easy to pick up fouls as the help defender if Pitt penetrates and hits the offensive glass.
On the flip side, Georgetown should be able to score and, I think, get to the rim if Pitt plays much M2M. If the Hoyas hit free throws like they did Saturday, I think they win. I'm happy it's a home game.

If we see DaJuan getting most of his FGAs from mid-range in, it could be a long night for Pitt. I expect pretty good defense from both sides, just more efficient offense as well.

I firmly believe that this game will be much tougher than the uconn game even though that was away and this is home. The reason is that although the huskies have better athletes than almost anyone in the Big East, they are not a great team and the coach, well that deserves no comment. So I believe that this will be a war and a very hard game to pull off. Blair= better than Mr. Thabeet. Young as good or better than Adrien. And the coach, well decide that for yourself, but thats a no brainer. Go Hoyas, let us begin the New Year Wright. I thought if we won one game itd be ok two amazing and three, well no promises but this may be my new typing style forever. That is NOT a promise, just a thought. GO HOYAS. I like this new style Lic! Your points are much more cogent and coherent. Instead of relying primarily on your enthusiasm (which is boundless) your comments show how much you actually know about our team and the rest of the Big East. I agree with all of the comments in your post. And also, Daytona... who talked about how much TOUGHER Pitt is than UConn. While I do think we collectively are still underestimating Calhoun with his two NCAA titles and his bench coach Blaney, we also underestimate Dixon who has been a very successful coach and makes the talent on his team look better. They will have seen the UCONN game and will come out ready for us. Unfortunately, we won't have our students there in full force minimizing our home court advantage, but I expect our guys to come out fired up anyway. All the kids on our team know Sam Young from summer and HS play, and will be ready for him. As you may know, he iw a very good friend of Jeff Green's. But GU is on a mission now. JT3 will have our guys ready to go. He'll show them the BET Tape. The older guys will want revenge. Chris Wright will want to continue to show the world just how good he is. And Greg Monroe will come out like the motivated, efficient pro he will become... not a pro any time soon hopefully, but he will get there whenever he chooses to. Lots of great points in this thread...Sleepy, Jack, SF, Mass, VCJack, chep et all. Thanks! and Happy New Year!!! To Everyone!!!

I'm worried about how we're going to cover Pittsburgh's 3-5. People have suggested putting summers on young. That'd be great, but that would leave austin covering 6-8 tyrell biggs. Do we just hope that shutting down young will offset what ever bigs will be able to get off of austin?
Or do we go zone all game? I'm worried about playing entirely zone since pitt's a decent 3pt shooting team.

I'm worried about playing entirely zone since pitt's a decent 3pt shooting team. Biggs against Austin isn't really that big a mismatch. Think about it this way; Biggs averages 8ppg and his team averages almost 80. Unless the first 13 opponents had 6'8 small forwards, smaller players are guarding him just fine. Austin is probably the best he's faced. You won't get much more entertaining than Blair-Monroe and Young-Summers matching up. I do think the Hoyas have an advantage 1-3. This would be a good game for Jessie to get out of his shooting slump, however.

Our main mismatch on defense as many have pointed out is young. I think we might just want to keep Freeman on him and let Young get his, because he is going to anyway. The main thing I am worried about defensively is Monroe getting into foul trouble guarding Blair. We might want to consider putting Summers on Blair, he would still have a height advantage and can hopefully avoid foul trouble. Monroe can help from the weak side if need be. Still Pitt has more worries defensively than we do. Blair isn't the best defender and can be foul prone, also has a 4 inch disadvantage guarding Monroe. Summers has a nice matchup with Biggs. Freeman might have trouble offensivley with Young, but I think he is quicker and is atleast used to playing against a height advantage with the teams we have played this season. Sapp shouldn't be outmanned and could have a nice game. Fields was a defensive liability in the Rutgers game and Chris won't be much easier to guard. Because of all of this I would expect to see Pitt in a zone for a good part of the game, so hopefully we are able to break it and are knocking down our outside shots.

I guess i'm just worried after watching adrien score over and over again on austin. I'm not worried about our ability to score. I'm just worried about pitt scoring on the interior in our man sets. 3-5 they can post up. Most teams SF's don't have post up games so it's fine to have austin guarding a taller three since their height advantage isn't as helpful on the perimeter.

I agree with and shared the concerns pre-game regarding Adrien. I just don't think Biggs is Adrien. He's more of a poor man's Chevy Troutman--an all arounder--than an aggressive rim attacking bull like Adrien.

Young is very good. Blair is very good. Fields is very good. Pitt is a very very good TEAM. But if we play like we played in hartford, watch out panthers, watch out. Go Hoyas, beat pitt on Saturday. Happy New Year to all and to all a good night.

I think the problem we see on defense is the difference in size. If we put Monroe on Blair that's a 4 inch difference. If we put Summers on Young that's a 2 inch difference. I like the Summers-Young matchup though because Dajuan is fairly mobile and I'm sure is familiar with some of Sam's moves, since he uses some of them himself. The issue then though is Biggs...I'm wondering if we shouldn't put the experienced Mr. Sapp on Young and put Austin on Dixon. I mean I'm sure we'll have the Fields-Wright matchup to look forward too, but when you're talking Austin vs. Jessie on Young that's only a 1 inch height difference and both are fairly good rebounding guards. On the other hand, Freeman has a clear advantage at the other end of the floor if we match him with Biggs. Tough choices.....

I am not as worried as you all are about Monroe getting in foul trouble. U-Conn was the first time, and he only had 3 fouls. The second foul on him was a very bad call. He is a very smart player.

Here are Pitt fans thoughts about the game if anyone is interested. forums.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=141&f=2456&t=3680200Not sure I agree that they are by far the more talented team. Although I will give them deeper, though I don't think their bench would contribute that much more than our bench does to our team.

Not sure if I agree that our guard play was abysmal, considering austin was clutch, chris played a pretty damn good game, and jessie hit clutch shots....but ok.

Not sure if I agree that our guard play was abysmal, considering austin was clutch, chris played a pretty damn good game, and jessie hit clutch shots....but ok. Well considering none of our guards would start for them, they are probably just used to another level play. We are lucky to be able to expierence it Saturday. Maybe we should have Wright and Freeman sit out and take notes on how Fields and Dixon play. And since apparently Monroe has no chance against Blair Saturday he could probably learn a thing or two from sitting out as well. It doesn't really matter because they only way we can win is if they beat themselves . Now I am not saying they shouldn't expect to win, or that they should bow down to us, but geesh, you would think they were UNC getting ready to play St John's the way they talk about talent differentials over there.

hopefully we can come out with the same type of energy we brought to uconn. only way to do that is a raucous student section. everybody be prepared to bring the noise..
edit: went back and read the pitt 'scouting' thread on us.. levance fields may have the better A/T ratio but the stats cannot encapsulate the looks and baskets chris creates. im curious to see how chris does against levance, who in the past has gotten frustrated with our guards and becomes a non-factor. many of the posters seem to just assume a pitt win, forgetting they havent been tested this entire season save a gritty rutgers team that does not have our talent.

Its gonna be tough to have a raucous student section when its winter break and almost no students are around. The rest of the crowd is going to have to pick it up, so get off your asses and make some noise old folks.
