I'd like us to try and get Tristan Spurlock. He's nice. He played good in the charm city challenge. I wonder if he gonna decommit.

My apologies if this has been done already -- I know things have been mentioned and that a separate thread about Memphis has been moved, but 28 pages is a lot to go through and I didn't see a good list anywhere. I combined looks at the ESPN coaching carousel and their recruiting page to see about possible pick-ups from de-commits. Of course, the board chatter is that Latavious Williams is our 2009 priority but, given the number of open roster spots, some of these might fit at GU; yes, I know some/most are unlikely in the extreme.
In order by height:
Daniel Orton (6-10,260,C,Kentucky -- now that Cousins is going to KY, does this make sense?) Steven Bjornstad (6-10,225,C,Nevada) Will Coleman (6-9,265,PF,Memphis JuCo transfer) Brock Motum (6-9,215,PF,Washington St) Shawn Kemp, Jr. (6-9,205,C,Alabama) Daniel Miller (6-8,240,C,Georgia) David Chadwick (6-8,215,PF,Washington St) Devonte Elliott (6-8,210,PF,Nevada) Tristan Spurlock (6-7,215,SF,Virginia -- originally considered GU) Xavier Henry (6-6,225,SG,Memphis/re-opened recruitment) Kevin Parrom (6-6,200,SF,Xavier) John Hood (6-6,190,SF,Kentucky) Nolan Dennis (6-5,180,SG,Memphis/re-opened recruitment) G.J. Vilarino (5-11,160 or 6-1,165 depending on the source,PG,Kentucky/re-opened recruitment)
Also undeclared in the top 50 but not on the recruit list or listed as committed elsewhere are:
Kyryl Natyazhko (6-10,250,C) Terrell Vinson (6-7,205,SF,released by Loyola Marymount)
Please, no flames -- it's just a list and I'm not saying we should go after anyone in particular.

Is Vee Sanford still an option? Haven't heard much lately about him. He's visiting Marshall this weekend... From the Charleston Daily MailSOURCES SAID Donnie Jones and his staff will have one of their top targets on campus for a recruiting visit Friday.
The prized prospect is Lexington Catholic's Vee Sanford, whom Jones watched in person last month during Kentucky's Sweet 16 State Tournament.
Sanford, a 6-3, 175-pound senior who can play both guard spots, scored 28 points in Lexington Catholic's 70-62 first-round win over Bowling Green but only six points in its 72-56 quarterfinal loss to eventual state champion Covington Holmes.
He averaged 22.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game entering the state tournament.
Marshall faces a long list of competitors for Sanford, whose suitors include Baylor, Bradley, Central Florida, Charlotte, Fairfield, Georgetown, George Mason, Kansas State, Nebraska, Marquette, Oklahoma State, Saint Louis, South Carolina, South Florida, Virginia, VCU, Wisconsin, Wright State and Wyoming.

Now, there's no way on earth we would lose Vee to Marshall if we were still interested - so I'm guessing we've moved on to other targets?

Maybe he's exploring options where he could be an immediate starter. Although I know nothing about Marshall's team.

Maybe he's exploring options where he could be an immediate starter. Although I know nothing about Marshall's team. I graduated from Marshall - so I have a pretty good grasp on their program. They're young - last year's starting PG (Damier Pitts) and SG (Shaq Johnson) were both freshman. That being said, beating out those two for PT is certainly less daunting of a task than beating out the likes of Chris, Austin and Jason. You could be on to something dunkshot. Vee's recruitment has been a little weird for me. I grew up in a Hoya household and have been a lifelong Hoya fan. But as I said before, I graduated from MU. Those two world's never really collided - until now. I'm not enjoying it at all.

Still seems to me that he is ours for the taking if we want him. Will he get the full offer, or will we lead him on for weeks and ultimately decide to pocket the scholarship or give it elsewhere? If you remember this whole thing is a bit reminiscent of a certain much-maligned-on-hoyatalk California guard last year (who wasn't completely awful at IU this year, fwiw, even though we still didn't need him). The staff does this to guys sometimes, they show them a lot of love and win the kids over, but at the last minute may decide it's not worth the scholarship or whatever. Not sure what to make of Sanford. It is easy to see the upside in him, but if he is not ready to step in and contribute right away next year, is it worth a scholarship? Because I think the minutes at shooting guard are more or less spoken for between Freeman and Clark, with Hollis swinging up to 2 guard over the next season or two. So is Vee ready to play the point? By the season after next we'll have a nice setup with senior Chris Wright taking most of the minutes and freshman Markel Starks working as his understudy and leading the team in those few minutes per game that Wright rests. Aside from the fact that we could use another ballhandler for next season, I am not sure where Sanford's minutes come from over the longterm. If he can really hold it down next year, that's great. But typically a guy who is unsigned in the spring and whose other best offers are places like Bradley, Marshall or Charlotte isn't a guy you'd expect to come in and really make a big impact as a freshman. And if Vee isn't a guy who can contribute until his sophomore year, when we've got
PG: Wright/Starks SG: Freeman/Clark/(Thompson) SF: Thompson/(Smith? Kendrick? Barton? etc)/Mescheriakov
then I don't know know that it makes sense. It could be pretty tough for him to crack that rotation. In short, and I don't mean to be too tough on either guy, but I could see Vee (if he came) ending up taking a similar path to Omar.... "Sleeper" recruit who is off the national radar, who JTIII plucks from a non-traditional recruiting ground, whose other best offers are mostly mid-majors and maybe 1 other high major, and who tries hard but is ultimately a little less talented than the other guards we've got and just isn't quite capable of breaking the rotation.
Maybe I'm wrong, all I've seen is a couple highlights, but just from reading opinions of the guy that's how it feels to me. If he becomes a Hoya I'll certainly welcome him.

Think I'm going to go ahead and jump off the Vee Sanford bandwagon (although truthfully, was probably never on it). Just not real impressed with his list of schools. More impressed by what I've read on the Thompson kid from Texas who's down to GU, Texas Tech and Arizona State. If Sanford is unlikely to contribute as a freshman, probably not worth the scholly. May come down to who's better, him or the Rahon transfer from Santa Clara? At least the Rahon kid appears to be a dead-eye shooter. Admittedly, have only read and watched highlight videos of these kids.
LaTavious is option #1, would love to go after Orton if he opens it up, same with Spurlock, then I like the Jamal Ola... kid that is local. Need bigs more than smalls right now. Would rather a project big than a project small. No need for project smalls in the class of 2009.

Quick update on Vee...
According to the Marshall Rivals writer, Vee canceled his trip to MU. Appears now his final three are Gtown, Georgia and Iowa.

What I don't get is that the beginning of the signing period is 2 days away and it doesn't appear that anybody will be signing with the Hoyas on the first day. Considering that we will have at least 4 open schollies, what gives?

Is there any way we can get in on Deshawn Painter? Local kid, plays for Boo Williams, which we have connections with.
