Oregon State lost that game more then Utah won it. Awful coaching decision when they got the ball back and not making Utah use any timeouts on defense and seeing players run out of bounds, etc...and that pooch kick is the dumbest thing in football.

Miami football--just when you think progress is being made......you go out and play like that against a bad FSU team. Oh well--at least Midnight Madness is 2 weeks away!
Bill Young and Randy Shannon should be embarrassed. Not just in their inability to get the team ready to play--but to see the game killing mistakes come from upperclassmen--Anthony Reddick has been awful 2 games in a row and is a SR, Daryl Sharpton is a JR and couldn't tackle me, and watching Sam Shields drop balls is only thing that guy does consistently.
FSU took it to Miami--deserved to win by 31-35 pts--but did what FSU does--self destruct and play stupid. Even with that-Miami still couldn't win. Ugh.
OU-Texas comes down to which team can run the ball better (I say Texas) and which DL can get pressure on opposing QB (don't know--OU'd DL is pretty good--but I love Muschamp's defense). Going to be a great game!
Tip my hat to Ohio State--that was a gutty win-when they very easily could've wilted. Tough back to back losses for Badgers--who have Penn State coming to town.
Joe Tiller--we know he's not going to return to coaching after the comments he made to Andre Ware--about "today's kids".
Kirk Ferentz---he must have pictures of the media as they defend him as if he's Lombardi. It's one thing to be a mediocre team--talent wise. Another when you are that mediocre and have had 22 arrests in the past 2 years. So you are bringing in mediocre players and they get into trouble as well? Yet--come January--we'll see "Hawkeyes Extend Ferentz Contract" and he'll be making over 3 million a year. Talk about a great job!
UConn losing made me smile-despite ESPN Hype and trying to make them relevant--they suck. Just hope they don't get more officials calls to help them in Big East play as it seems to happen yearly.
Shocker of day---UVA STOMPING Maryland by 31 pts, and shutting them out. WTF happened to Terps? You can beat a good Cal team, win in Clemson, and can't beat UVA? Did Fridge go on a Twinkies binge and forget to practice?
Oh well--it was a so-so week for games-but just sets tone for this weekend where there are great games from start of day to finish--and I've got a wedding to go to next Saturday at 4pm cst--so I'll get to see OU-Texas and will be back by Halftime of LSU-Florida. Maybe the fact I visit a Georgetown site--I could use the Norovirus as.........oh hell that is what TIVO is for, I'll hang in there for a few hours before I race home.

RDF...agree w/ you re: Miami-FSU, but include Patrick Nix as well. What a completely asinine gameplan he came out with--somebody's been getting sensitive to the media criticism methinks--it's the same thing he's always done at Miami when he gets desperate--start throwing deep early and often and passing 85% of the time for no good reason. Graig Cooper had six carries yesterday. I realize they were behind the whole game and by a lot, but it's like he became the bizarro Jim Miceli (GU's OC)...and he went away from the playcalling that did work against TAM and UNC (they're not so bad, huh?)
Jimbo Fisher and Mickey Andrews pwned Miami yesterday...but all the TOs and bizarre punt mishaps--Bowden Ball at its finest and why FSU is never gonna be legit again until Bobby retires. His senility actually rubs off on his special teams apparently.
So the Miami is back talk is dead...they are waaaaaay too young to do anything this year, and you see that with all the silly penalties (3rd down PI's, tons of offsides) and wildly inconsistent performances. Talent is there--speaking of Bowden Ball, howsabout not kicking to Benjamin, who is going to be a legit weapon in the Devin Hester mold.
I liked that Vanderbilt won yesterday, not because I dig the "smart schools do good" theme, but b/c I like seeing teams who have a history of "almost" getting there (or in Vandy's case, never really being close) making good. I'd love to see Duke make a bowl game one of these years, don't think it'll happen this year though--need to score point against competent teams first. If you think I will enjoy rooting for Vandy when they play Florida, you are correct.
Maryland--hilarious and somehow entirely predictable. There was a great column in the Express on Friday dissing the notion at the start of the season that UM was pegged for the Congressional Bowl and implying that they really should be dreaming Orange Bowl right now. Dagger.
Might as well go ahead and start pondering which "moveable object" will win out on Jan 1 in the Gator Bowl--Notre Dame's bowl winless streak or the crap-tastic ACC.

I have a practice group retreat this weekend, which means I'll be seeing little if any football. Bums me out, as I was really looking forward to OU/TU. I have no desire to watch the game two days after the fact. Oh, well.

OU-Texas comes down to which team can run the ball better (I say Texas) and which DL can get pressure on opposing QB (don't know--OU'd DL is pretty good--but I love Muschamp's defense). Going to be a great game! I agree Texas will run the ball better, but I don't think either team will run the ball particularly well on Saturday. If Kirk Ferentz was Randy Shannon, he'd have been fired 29 times by now. But national newspapers don't report on the coach at the Midwestern school in the cornfields who has done nothing right over the past 2-3 years. UConn isn't relevant or particularly good (the media just needed a story for this week), but I do think it's impressive they have gone from I-AA to consistently competing for bowl games in such a short time span. There are programs that have been around for years with better histories that are mired in mediocrity (Baylor, Syracuse) that have lost to UConn recently. I've said it before, but I'll say it again -- if you get married during football season, a time of year that involves mass migrations on Saturday afternoons, you are a JERK. ____________________________________________ Week 7 Picks For Games That Matter: Wake over Clemson -- Bowden firing locked up (Thursday) Texas over Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry for the Golden Hat Colorado upsets Kansas Vanderbilt over Mississippi State -- Commodores become bowl-eligible Texas Tech over Nebraska UNC over Notre Dame Michigan State over Northwestern SC over Arizona State -- I'm off the Sun Devil bandwagon Penn State over Wisconsin Mizzou over Oklahoma State LSU over Florida

Re: UConn, what could Georgetown do athletically with $1 billion in state funds? That's right -- they got a billion dollars from the state, and I think most of it went to football.
I'm not impressed by the ROI, frankly.

Austin, I agree with you that ND will probably lose this weekend, but you have you realized that you only include them in your "Games that Matter" when you choose them to lose? Doesn't matter either way, but it struck me as funny.

Doesn't matter either way, but it struck me as funny. That's not the criterion I'm using. Michigan, MSU, and Purdue are all traditional rivals of Notre Dame. Those games matter because of past history. Hang around until November 15 and I'll probably pick the Irish to beat another traditional rival, the Naval Academy. The UNC game matters because the 4-1 Tarheels are a ranked team and a good story this season, and that story matters more when Carolina, a team with a poor football history of its own, plays (and beats) the University of Football In America [/tk].

Fair enough, but Purdue? Really? They're a special kind of bad. Also, I think it would be better if you picked against the spread. Certainly tougher, anyway.

The spread is for low-life degenerates that waste their money gambling on football every weekend like hifi. I'm just a fan. Re: Purdue, the Boilers had just given Oregon a tough game. I thought they'd bounce back from a tough loss. I should have known better.

Don't know how this game will turn out yet, but it's very disappointing that drives are being sustained and points are being put on the board by the officials in a contest b/t 2 good football teams.
ON EDIT: Re-reading what I wrote this morning, it sounds overly negative. The 103rd meeting of Texas and Oklahoma -- by the way, Texas owns the series 58-40-5 -- was definitely one of the best of my lifetime. I was surprised by a few things today: 1. The pre-game hype for OU -- the Gameday crew predicted a blowout. 2. The coaching strategy from Texas -- great job on both sides of the ball. 3. Texas' guts -- this was the kind of game in which Vince-less Mack Brown teams have faded in the past, but the 2008 Longhorns never lost focus in today's game.
Watching next week's opponent (Mizzou) lose to Oklahoma State now. The schedule doesn't get any easier for Texas -- after the Tigers visit Austin, Oklahoma State comes to town, then the 'Horns play at Texas Tech. The 'Horns get Baylor at home before traveling to Lawrence, where KU is tough (see: 2004), and finish at home against TAMU on Thanksgiving night. This year's team is very, very good, but I will be very impressed if the 'Horns can get through that schedule and the Big 12 Championship unscathed. If they do, see y'all in Miami.

If not for that crap "breathing on the kicker" call on the OU punter, the final score would've been more reflective of the difference between the teams today.
Piggybacking on RDF, this is the best I've seen the UF offense in a long time now that they have these young RBs stepping up.

Nice win for Horns--and Venables defense shows up at the perfect time. That guy is a clown.
Sadly--it was only game I was able to watch during a great weekend of games.
Surprise scores to me:
1. The continue of the free-fall of ECU. I give credit to UVA and Groh for 2 impressive wins on back to back weekends--and this shows how Mid Majors need to be treated differently. They can't sustain their play over long haul and ECU proves that.
2. Oklahoma State beating Mizzou. I like Zac Robinson and Dez Bryant better then Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin--but I didn't expect that win at all for Cowboys.
3. Toledo beating Michigan in Ann Arbor. First year/new system or not--this can't happen.
4. CROOM beating Vandy and Arkansas beating ex-Auburn coach Tommy Tubberville and his Tigers. How in the hell do you let a perfect season go by losing to CROOM?
LEAST SURPRISING SCORE
1. Florida routing an overrated LSU Team. LSU's most "impressive" win was at Auburn. Anyone think that is impressive now? Miles continues to get away with stupidity in late game situations--and while it's entertaining--it also has people believing he's capable of doing anything with that team. He screwed up last year's team into losing 2 times--so he can mess anything up. Florida gave them a BEATDOWN!
2. Penn State--they--along with Texas were teams I've liked before season even started and they are playing great football right now.
3. Miami winning a disgusting game to watch--remember I didn't see the game yet--that is how it's written up--an "ugly" game to watch. Canes fans are still suffering from being Clap-i-fied.
SIGN THAT SEASON IS UNDERWAY---Ryan Reynolds the LB for Oklahoma goes down with a knee injury. I hate for anyone to suffer a knee injury--but this is 3rd year in a row that kid has gone down with an ACL and I believe he was injured prior to blowing it out-he was limping in 2nd Quarter badly--and they left him in-until it blew out completely. Sad to see for the kid-but it's not shocking at all.

I thought Hansbrough showed amazing heart yesterday in willing UNC to victory. Seriously, though, that might have been some of the worst officiating I've seen (at least until next weekend). Otherwise, a pretty entertaining game.
