I've said it elsewhere that I don't think it will have a huge impact on our team--how far this team is going to go this year was never going to rise or fall on Macklin (unless he suddenly improved by leaps and bounds).
Not sure whether this will be a good move for him or not. While everyone talks about him benefiting from a different "style," in the end the biggest issue he faced here wasn't our style of play but his undeveloped fundamentals. So while on the outer edges, the style of whatever team he picks might make a difference, the key is going to be what Vern does with his year off. Work on his free throw shooting, boxing out, and extending his range outside of simple running hooks and dunks, and it will be a good move for him.
If he thinks a different style is all that he's going to need, then I think he'll see more of the same. But best of luck, I hope he does well--so long as we don't ever have to face him.

i think we need to get another big man for this year now. if braswell does not make it by start of season ,i think we should red shirt him.he would be to far behind if he does not qualify from the start not in jan.i believe coach needs to get a big man 6-10 or bigger to come in with this class.if not we will just have monroe and sims.what if there is a injury to any bigs .freeman, summers, sims, monroe, that is it if braswell does not make it. i think coach has to get a big man,if juco is only choice then we get a big man.
go hoyas!!!!!!!!!!

Who is awaiting for the word on what Thabeet will do? I think he was referring to Charles Okwandu, a 7'1" Nigerian, who is in an American juco. However, the description might have fit Ater Majok, a 6'9" player from Sudan (via Australia). I don't think either is signed.

Actually, unless I'm missing something the Maryland scout board didn't say anything terrible. In general, if you read that Maryland board regularly you will notice how they bash their own players excessively and any player who doesn't decide to play at Maryland either doesn't have the grades or is getting paid from somewhere else. I was just really surprised to see some people on this board hating on Vern especially without even knowing his reasons for leaving.

How about front-court depth? If Braswell does not make it, then we have Sims, Monroe and Summers (Nikita when we're in foul trouble). If he makes it, then add Braswell to the list. Still, it's at least two freshmen having to play 20-30 minutes. They'll need to learn in a hurry. We could've used Macklin's experience, fouls and minutes.

I'm not "hating" on Vern personally. I'm just very frustrated by him seemingly blowing the biggest opportunity of his career because of something as little as 5-7 mpg, which is what we're talking about here.

No real article yet - perhaps there will be something in the Post or the Times over the next few days. I wouldn't hold your breath though. EDIT: spoke too soon - a Barker Davis 'blog' style article was just posted - no Macklin quotes, but the perpetual "reliable source" Wash Times: Strange timing for Macklin's departureIt is instructive to compare the class with which Coach Thompson handles a departure compared to Coach Pitino...

Will this thread go off on what an alleged "source" said? Stay tuned.
BTW, get rid of the nickname.

Said the source: "Ticket [Macklin's nickname] chose to listen to what he wanted to hear from some folks outside the program, rather than what he needed to hear from those within it. When expectations don't meet reality, the hardest thing to do is point the finger at yourself." PR: Yes, it will. Not totally on point, but it sounds like someone from GU a "reliable source" who is talking to the media is also less-than-pleased with a (dare I say SELFISH) decision based on his "development" or fitting with our system.

PR: of course it will.
You don't become a better player by playing in a system that lets you do what you already do well.

This is going to leave us perilously thin inside. Hopefully the frosh can come out strong (and hopefully everything will work out this year for Braswell) because we could get beat up a lot on the inside this year. UConn, Pitt, and even ND are going to abuse us inside. Ugh. I'm worried we are going to look like Marquette or Nova next year.

I've gone on ad naseum, so I'll try to keep it short. I don't deny that it will have some impact, but the reaction has been overblown. We will be thin, and yes we'll need our freshmen to step up early, but I don't think that's a bad thing--the more minutes they get in the early going, the more comfortable they will be with the system by the end of the season. And as for Macklin specificly, we're all just guessing, but I just didn't expect him to be much of a contributor next season. I think the fact he only got 3 points and 2 boards a game wasn't just a function of limited minutes behind Roy, it was just...not there. He'd show flashes here and there, but for the most part, he just never consistently brought it. 20% free throw percentage? Are you kidding me? Maybe he would have had the breakout season some people keep talking about, but here's the facts: --he didn't have the impact we hoped for when he came in. --he didn't have the improvement last year we hoped for/expected. --two years at 3 points and 2 boards. So maybe in the short-term, especially early season, we'll be hurt by the loss. In the long term, our freshmen will get more minutes and more experience, and at this point, we still have the hopes for them that we had when Macklin came in two years ago. Dang it, I went on again, didn't I....

I'm sad to see Vern go, and his departure is not helpful for us next season.
I would say, though, all the talk about his fit with our system ignores the most disappointing parts of his game -- his defense and rebounding. Coming out of high school, he was supposed to be a big time shotblocker and rebounder, with elite athleticism. He was a good athlete -- not a great one. Jameel Watkins with a hook shot and an awesome scream.
Godspeed, Macklin.

Bad decision, period. Bad for Gtown next year, period. VMack would have contributed significantly next year, period.
Thus spoke JGalt.
