Yawn.
Wake me when he manages to string together two well played games consecutively.

They have the picture of "The Scream" up next to the announcement. Definitely the highlight of his career (and more than half his career average right there).

Vern,
Thanks for being the first McD AA to committ to the program in a long time. Thanks for being part of our first final 4 team since 1985. Thanks for playing your heart out in the limited minutes you received. Thanks for doing your best to keep us in the game against Davidson with Roy out. Thanks for acting with class on and off the court. I wish you were going to be part of the team next year, but wherever you go I'll root for. Thanks.

Not shocked by this news - I could have seen it happening at the end of last season, given that he got very little pt as a freshman, but at this point he had shown falshes in the past months, which had me thinking he had acquired enough self confidence to think he would be a major contributor on the 2008-09 team. I wonder whether his choice is just tied to sports or whether he just didn't feel comfortable at GU? Obviously that's his business.
It's sad that the first McDonalds All America at Gtown of the 21st century did not pan out as had been hoped. I had a gut feeling a guy with that kind of physique and such a stricking name would have become a star, but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be...at least not here.
If he were to go to the ACC, I hope it's Virginia, a program I admire which is trying to re-emerge and where they sorely need a big man.
At this point what will Thompson and the staff do...opt for a juco player to add some frontcourt depth or do you gamble on Braswell joining the more ballyhooed Monroe and Sims?
Good luck with whatever your future choice is Vern! Hope you do well

Virginia/Virginia Tech are close to home, as are the North Carolina schools. But his game seems tailor-made for Clemson.
If wants to take a step down, there are a couple of DC-Area schools that would be a great fit.

Never good to see a quality recruit leave the program. Having said that, it became apparent this year that Vernon was just not a great fit with the JT III style of play. What the Hoyas need is big guys who can hit the jump shot out to at least 15 ft. Its that range that opens up the passing lanes. Hibbert was only marginal at this aspect of his game (yes I saw the winning 3) and I don't think I ever saw Macklin take a shot from that distance all year. I think tht Monroe and Sims will have their work cut out for them next year, but the loss of Macklin--which I really hate to see-- will definitely accelerate their development. There should be plenty of playing time for the Hoya "bigs" next year. As an aside, my colleague's son is a sophomore at the Hilltop and indicated that Macklin is a great kid. We should all wish him well and hope tht his departure is a positive one for him and the program.

Has he left? If so, I no longer need to care about him. From "Big Ticket" to "Needs a Ticket" in two short years.

I would just like to say that, if my pointing out (repeatedly) that Vernon screams like a) a girl; or b) Peter Brady contributed at all to this decision, I wholeheartedly apologize and will take it back if he would reconsider.

Go check out the Maryland Scout Board - you would fit in well over there.

Hate to see Mack go, thought he would finally blossom next season with sustained minutes. Hope him all the best wherever he ends up.
Definitely makes the team thin up front next season, but JTIII will manage.
Anyone think this makes a local big like Dante Taylor a priority for '09?

Always sorry to see anyone go, they were recruited with the hope they would be big contributors, doesn't always work out. Wish VMack well wherever he lands and hope more that we get an even better player in his place!

Good luck, Vern! i wish you were staying around as I was expecting you to have a very solid year in 08-09 alongside monroe in the starting lineup. I will miss the running hook!

Go check out the Maryland Scout Board - you would fit in well over there. That makes no sense at all. Of course, I wouldn't expect anything more from someone like you.

Actually, unless I'm missing something the Maryland scout board didn't say anything terrible.

A mixed bag -- I do not think that Macklin would ever be more that a role player, given his lack of rebounding and post defense. He is a good passer and would have prospered playing with Chris Wright, who can drive and dish off. But I suspect that he felt that he was recruited over -- with three 6'8" and above players coming in this year, all top 75.
This will hurt if Braswell does not qualify and we cannot find a suitable 2008 replacement, as Vern could have at minimum eaten minutes and helped with depth/foul trouble. But I doubt that a former AA would accept this role for 2 more years so it is reasonable for him to move on basketball wise. If Braswell does not come next year, I am hoping, perhaps unrealistically, that JT3 has something up his sleeve recruiting wise, perhaps swooping in on the African supposedly bound for UConn. He is supposedly awaiting word on what Thabeet will do. Perhaps JT has feelers out...
