In this era of rapid growth for Georgetown and its basketball program, I think it's time that we upgrade another relic: the old Georgetown commercial shown during our games.
It looks like it was produced in the early 90s (maybe late 80s) and makes Georgetown look like a university where everyone does crew and little else. With such a good product on the basketball court nowadays, I think it's time we re-do the commercial to properly make everyone, from prospective students to alumni, proud of our fantastic university.
Thoughts?

I believe, and someone please correct me if I am wrong, that the in-arena graphics and video have been redone over the past couple of years. Most of this has been done in conjunction with the help from the Washington Capital's franchise.
As for the televised commercials, new ones were made two years ago and have been the only ones used since (unless CBS has aired the wrong ones). They were shot on film and have a modern aesthetic. The new commercials have been well received by various sectors of the Georgetown community (e.g., alums, current students, prospective students, parents, etc.).
An interesting tidbit, I know Duke contacted Georgetown to learn more about the commercials and the company that produced them; they were very complimentary of the commercials.

The new commerical is almost exactly like the old commercial, except the kids don't have 70s hair.

It was done circa 1997. A friend is shown for a half-second.
My ideas. These are presented royalty-free, no credit need be given if they vaporize the old ad.
Idea #1 : What's A Hoya?
Scene 1: Opposing Basketball Arena. Hostile, orange-clad crowd chanting "What's A Hoya" from actual game footage.
Scene 2: Gray text on blue background flashes names of prominent alumni and what they're famous for while a light female voice mentions each. What starts quickly suddenly becomes a flood, each faster than the last.
Scene 3: Gray text on blue background, with intonation by someone with a deep voice. "They know what a Hoya is." "Do you?" "Georgetown University".
Idea #2 : Hoya Saxa
Scene 1 : Subtitled throughout, people in different locales say "My name is X, and I am a Georgetown alum" in different languages while happy music plays.
Intoned midway through "People come from all over the world to study at Georgetown so they can make the world a better place."
People continue speaking...
"And by the end, they all speak the same language".
Music rises.
Scene 2: Back to all the people, each now saying "Hoya Saxa".
Scene 3: "Georgetown. Leading the way in the world."
Idea #3 : We Are Georgetown.
Scene 1: Show a crowd of current students, all in Hoya gear. One says "I'm a conservative". Another says "I'm a liberal". Another says "I'm Catholic." "I'm Muslim". "I don't think we do enough to help the poor". "I think we need to leave the United Nations". as more voices come out.
All the voices stop. One person per sentence says: "You learn two things very quickly at Georgetown. The first is that you learn the most when you learn with those who share viewpoints different than your own. And the second is that..."
Scene 2: Georgetown game footage. Pan to student section doing "We Are / Georgetown" cheer.
Back to Scene 1: "when we are unified, we are unstoppable." All students say together "We are Georgetown".

You would prefer shots of someone trying to uproot a small tree in Burleith? Ah, the true Georgetown crew experience. Frankly, I'm not sure what these commercials accomplish to begin with. Unless the school is in a situation where apps are dropping (which I can't imagine the case with both the increased sports prominence and the echoboomers increasing the percentage of the population that is college-aged), you'd think there would be little point to spending money in an attempt to get more students to apply. Perhaps the 80's theme was used to tug at the heartstrings of what should soon be some of our most well-off alums (entering their 50s) in an effort to get them to send their discretionary dollars in Gtown's direction.

I don't think the University has a marketing plan. Granted, it is doing great without one, but I don't think it knows what image it wants to convey, either to prospective students or alumni.
When it figures that out, the commercial should be in sync as part of a total PR effort. Unless, of course, that's already happened, which in case our desired image is a somewhat scattershot image of being incredibly stuffy and stuck in the eighties. We're like Troy from The Goonies.

Scene 1: Close up of Roy Hibbert staring into the camera. "Roy, Roy, Roy" plays in the background.
And fade.
Immediate 200% increase in applications.

I really like exorcist's ideas. But i actually like the current commercial. I think it's just as good or better than any other college's. None of these comercials are very good. I think there's nothing wrong with it. But I'd be n favor of changing it for the better, but i don't think it's horrible as people suggest.

I guess you haven't heard DeGoia speak recently, he basically uses "International community committed to the Catholic and Jesuit ideal of excelence" as a vocal pause. The "we do crew" message also comes along strong based on the high number of kids who try out crew for a day (I lasted three days) And if prospective students are tricked into thinking they'll ever see the inside of Riggs, meh
