I haven't seen a copy of the prospectus in awhile. Has that been updated either? Cause there was definitely some late 80's/early 90's hair and fashion going on when I got it in 2001.

More on topic, I notice then the commercial is played that the older generation seems to love the commercial while the younger generation isn't thrilled with it.

I think the commercial that needs more urgent updating is the nursing school commercial shown during games at the Verizon center. The action is fine, if a little weird, with the guy riding in on the motorcycle before morphing into an OR nurse. The sound, however, is terrible; you can't hear the voiceover, and the music has the treble turned up so high as to drown out everything else. While the quality of the University-wide commercial is subject to some debate, the nursing school commercial is just embarrassing. I think this type of failure is more of a hurt than a good University-wide commercial is a help, because no one chooses to go to school based on a commercial (and no one expects these commercials to be bang-up, anyways), but people can think poorly of a school if the commercial is amateurish (cough...UCONN), like the nursing school one.

Just so people know, the admissions office has no role in the tv commercial (one might ask why that is), though they do publish the prospectus. Unfortunately, the office is so leanly staffed that they could never hire anyone who has the technical skills to create a true high quality publication, so every few years they need to bring in an outside vendor to redesign it, but it is too expensive to do wholesale changes every year. That said, it has definitely been updated significantly since 2001.

Exorcist - I really like your ideas. All three would work and are very good...
Any way to send them to GU? Also, we should remember that ads are not just for TV. Think about the thousands of kids that must go to the GU website when they are thinking about college choices and applying. All three of these would make very good "online" ads.

I don't think the University has a marketing plan. Granted, it is doing great without one, but I don't think it knows what image it wants to convey, either to prospective students or alumni. When it figures that out, the commercial should be in sync as part of a total PR effort. Unless, of course, that's already happened, which in case our desired image is a somewhat scattershot image of being incredibly stuffy and stuck in the eighties. We're like Troy from The Goonies. I guess you haven't heard DeGoia speak recently, he basically uses "International community committed to the Catholic and Jesuit ideal of excelence" as a vocal pause. The "we do crew" message also comes along strong based on the high number of kids who try out crew for a day (I lasted three days) And if prospective students are tricked into thinking they'll ever see the inside of Riggs, meh Summary of every DeGioia speach I've ever heard: "Globalization...inter-religious dialogue, Jesuit ideal, dialogue...global university, inter-religious, global...global, undergrad experience, global, inter-religious..." And I feel absolutely no pity for any undergrad who never sees the inside of Riggs. Unless you're a complete clod who does nothing at the school, you'll have ample opportunity to get in there, especially as a senior. Shouldn't this potentially fall under Dr. P's "public relations and strategic development"? I know he has a tech-ish guy. I think his name is Matt. A commercial should be his deal. Eh, whatever. If you've ever seen the University administrative structure, it won't surprise you that the left hand doesn't know that the right hand exists...or the other 450 hands.

I have never been involved in the budgetary discussions or in determining how different departments of campus interact, but it will suffice to say that I have been less than impressed with the way the departments are able to help each other out at GU. It starts from having 4 separate undergrad schools that see each other more as competition than as partners, and goes from there. Everyone needs to take care of their own area first and foremost, and often to the exclusion of others. And the opportunities to get to know people in other departments are generally limited to times when you need something from them, which is not a great way to build relationships. My own personal experience was most negative in things like trying to get ahold of things like an updated campus map for inclusion in admissions publications- the number of requests it took was staggering. Also, working on the website and creating online forms required so much bureaucracy and so many approvals that it made those processes take 5 times as long as they should, and some are still unfinished as a result. The years of getting little but obstruction from those outside your office but inside the same university were beyond frustrating, and made turning to the use of vendors the best alternative.

I like all of theexorcist's ideas - very creative and would definitely excite prospective students and alumni alike. I do think we need a better commercial as a better way to promote Georgetown. Yes, current students and alumni don't care as much, but to prospective students, the commercial is not exciting at all. The fact is that although we still attract record application numbers, our yield on accepted students has been getting worse. I know the commercial is just a small part (especially with some of the good points brought up about not having the schools and admissions office working together), but it's a start.

I be interested if anyone could post a commercial from a university that is in Georgetown's league admissions wise. I'm just curious how a school that doesn't need to attract more applicants uses its free commercial. Unlike UConn, whose commercial is directed at prospective students, I always felt that Georgetown's ad lacked purpose--most likely because the school doesn't know that to do with that slot. And I can't say I have a great idea either.
If we wanted to appeal to students, I'm not even sure how that can be done. Sure, Georgetown has top notch academics, but how do you put that into a commerical? Every school claims to have great academics; whenever I hear a school talk about how great it is in commercials, I keep thinking that it protests too much. Which I guess is why I'd like an example of what Duke or Stanford do in their commercials. Maybe the commerical should focus on all of the social good GU is doing as a way to appeal to donors....

Didn't have a chance to see what exorcist posted, but I do think ND's spots are pretty good. They certainly get plenty of opportunity to show them on NBC, though I doubt many are watching at this point.
Edit: I mean the "Fighting..." ones, not the creepy ones with the girl lighting the candle.

Wow. I can't say I like any of those. Vandy looks like a tech school; Michigan's are boring, and Notre Dame's candle ad is at best shallow and at worst sacreligious. It is more of an ad for the Catholic Church in any event--reminds me of the Simpson's mock Super Bowl ad: "The Catholic Church. We've made a few ... changes."
