What would it take to make everyone happy in this issue? we could start with how funny it is for a white person to tell a black person what is offensive and what is not

my own personal experience, and that of other black people holds more weight imo. are you actually attempting to posit there is no negative and/or sterotypical usage assigned to homeboy? shows the shortcomings of internet research...hahahah Okay, so we've got the answer: information found on the internet is specious (Thank you, Lisa!), but ron's personal experience is pretty much gospel. Got it.

there is no hope, YB. No one will be happy we should just drop the subject.
And note i pointed out the own flaws in my "internet research" by saying it is not the be all end all but just trying to give a fresh perspective of where other people are coming from. Way to hi jack something else ron.

i guess you guys just can't appreciate where ron or myself are coming from. to say it is a non issue alone is a slap in the face. You can ask anyone on this board that I'm extremely hyper-sensitive relating to issues dealing with race and culture. This one just sounds like kids being kids and enjoying college.

I'm curious to know - how do people feel about the beyond lame "Father, Son, Hoya Spirit" tag line? We know its already offended one member of the program (Tyler)... can't imagine many serious Catholics/Christians approve of such a treasured part of their faith being co-opted for a lark.
Are the same standards applied to this potentially offensive portion of the shirt as the other?
(I'm not taking a personal stance either way, just curious.)

tjimmy hoya's i didn't. jimmy if you cant respond in a more intelligent, substantive, and measured manner...shut up when grown folks are talking. Okay...let's see what these "grown folks" (y'know, the people I imagine as having some perspective on life or at the very least, have the common sense to try and understand something before they publicly criticize and complain about them...) had to say... is it a picture of jt3? is it a cartoonish representation of him? or is it just 'some' black guy on the shirt? in fact, post the shirt somewhere. present it here, to eliminate all suppositon. ron, did you really get all worked up about this shirt without ever actually seeing it?ron, if you can't do the very basic things like deducing negative opinions you friends had about a shirt from facts...please stop posting on hoyatalk. You sound like a blind maryland fan who'll take any bizarro hearsay evidence to trash something. It's painfully obvious that you misunderstand the shirt and you misunderstand what the word means to the youth culture today. I can't wait till you come back next time to underscore the idea that the MCI Center will be playing hip hop for a predominantly white crowd as a joke on the players, without considering y'know..the players wanted that music in the first place or how the chicken tenders are some slight or any other silly thing you can blow way out of proportion because of potential racism that doesn't actually exist. It's all gobsh*te. Move on. Hoya paranoia this shouldn't be.

What about a "GU Family Tree" T-Shirt with Pops on Front and III on back as DADDY!!! Heck, I'm so festive we could even throw in a pic of Esh with "Cousin Oliver" as far as I'm concerned.
Guys if the T-Shirt offends someone--that is their right to voice their opinion. Respect it, and it's not like GU Students can't come up with something else creative--afterall you guys are some of the smartest people in the country--and those who communicate with me--are well some of the sickest, so should be able to combine that mindset and come up with something everyone can embrace.

I sincerely doubt the intent of the shorts was to offend- or even that it was negligent in it. I don't think the creators actually thought it would offend at all, from what I'm hearing.
Some liked the back, disliked the front (me); some the opposite (TC).
The intent here seems honorable. They certainly aren't the official shirts- perhaps could the topic be let go?

ron's repeated emphasis has been on the effect, not the intent. Personally, I think that is a garbage argument. If a bunch of people get angry b/c of ignorance (not knowing the "Jesus is my..." shirts) and that these shirts are a clever rip-off of said slogan, then it is their own damn faults. If, as sixers intimates, seeing the shirt would lead certain persons to violence, then they should be arrested and slapped around for being total zeroes.
I also love how, through this entire debate, we have 007 soiling himself out of fear that they will catch fire and everyone will wear them at Verizon. I too hope that does not happen.

Were you even able to get them on? Seems like it might be hard to do... * = Not So Thinly Veiled Highjack Post

I am offended because the T-shirts seem to be comparing JTIII to Jesus. Blasphemy.

It looks like we're going to have to agree to disagree. I think the majority of people understand that the shirt was not intended as offensive and truly isn't offensive. some people are offended by the shirt because of some percieved slight by the term homeboy. I've never heard this phrase used in a negative light. In today's culture it's not a negative and is used by white people from time to time as well. Maybe at some point in the past it was used negatively. never to my knowledge but even if it was the meaning has changed and no longer means that. No one is goin to be able to convince either side that they're worng. Let's just move on.

I honestly dont care what shirt people wear to the arena as long as it is one of our school colors, and ideally I would like people to wear gray. Other schools are able to coordinate wearing a school color and I think that if we're going to consider ourselves a major program we should be able to do that as well. Just think of the entire 100 and 200 levels decked out in a unified gray. Anyone see the white out in the Penn State student section on TV this past weekend, Im thinking something like that. WEAR GRAY!!! please

My goodness - this thread has veered WAY off the topic of Hoya basketball. I'll move it to the 37th & O board, since it started out about GEORGETOWN shirts, but it could easily fit in B & G. With the season soon upon us and recruiting threads popping up like weeds, this belongs over there to create some space.

I, for one, am offended by both the front and the back. I don't care if the intent was honorable. The effect is that it offends some people of color and of religion. Even if you honestly don't think it's offensive, I suggest you don't buy or wear it to respect others.

Well, I would let this whole thing drop except for EasyEd's comments. I am not a conservative and I am definitely not someone who complains about "PC" people being too sensitive. I consider myself very aware of rhetoric and images that might be found offensive, and I certainly try to avoid the same in my life. BUT, for EasyEd to say The "Even if you honestly don't think it's offensive, I suggest you don't buy or wear it to respect others," goes way too far. You cannot argue that this t-shirt is indisputably offensive and without value. This is not some NASCAR fan waving a confederate flag, or John Warner's noose decorating his office. The images that appear here might be considered offensive by some but not by others. The language here may be appropriated from black culture or from catholic dogma, but I don't think it speaks against that culture or dogma. for example, I have a "Nu-South" tee with the confederate flag reshaped with the red, black, and green colors of African liberation. It's just a t-shirt, but it carries with it a separate political significance. Those shirts were controversial when they came out because they offended both blacks and southerners, but I'd argue to the death my right to wear one in spite of such resentment. www.nusouth.comThis JT3 shirt uses borderline offensive text and applies it to our school's basketball program. That might not be as political a statement as using African colors on the confederate flag. And a college basketball t-shirt might not be the most significant place for transformative or discursive text. But that doesn't mean it can't reshape the rhetoric it uses. You're all my homeboys. Glad to see a serious discussion. Wear gray on gamedays!
