Ahhhhhh a cartoonish figure of JTIII is going to cause riots in the middle east!!!!!! In other news the word, "homeboy" now replaces all other curse words listed by the FCC. That homeboy was homeboying homeboy yo! to be honest, the cartoonish picture makes it even worse. all i am saying is, do not be surprised to hear a story or two of students being questioned by blacks at the verizon center

it had a characature of a black guy on it...not jt3's picture? what the hell? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ?? how is this not indicative of a high level of disrespect...at best??? not only does it talk about homeboy's, but has a generic black guy on it? you can' t defend that. double hoya...if the paterno example had a generic, sterotypical italian guy with the pisanos (sp?) for paterno phrase...would that be acceptable? i really dont think it would.

From where did you invent the idea that it had a generic black guy on the shirt?

How about "Esherick is not my homeboy" t-shirts? i think the point should be, how many blacks in the dc area know this shirt is a cheap rip off from a jesus shirt? i would guess not many. that being said, they are going to take the shirt at face value. a shirt with a bad picture of jt3 on it and the words he is my homeboy on it being worn by a white teen.

I guess I'm never going to sell my t-shirts that say "Guns don't kill people, dangerous minorities do" Yeah, they're going straight to the Clearance rack, next to the "Ron is my homeboy" shirts... Ron- it was a picture of JT3 on the shirt, not a generic black guy. It was just a hand-drawn picture, so it looked cartoon-ish.

is it a picture of jt3? is it a cartoonish representation of him? or is it just 'some' black guy on the shirt?
in fact, post the shirt somewhere. present it here, to eliminate all suppositon.

If people feel like wearing these other shirts around thats not my business, but I want people to remember that the We Are Georgetown shirt should be THE OFFICIAL shirt of Georgetown Basketball.

It's a hand drawn picture, modeled on the hand drawn picture of Jesus in the "Jesus is my Homeboy" tshirts. Which, you know, are what the front of the shirt is modeled on.

Guys, we're gonna have WAY bigger battles to fight in this life. I really don't think this T-Shirt is worth the energy. If the kids like it, and JTIII isn't offended by it, then let it go.
Some think it is culturally insensitive. But we have to realize that 'Homeboy' is immersed deeply into pop culture now, and for the most part has been used as a term of endearment.
Now let's have a rousing chorus of Kum-Ba-Ya and put this thread to bed...

I work at an establishment where it is typical to call anyone and everyone homeboy, homey and various other derivations of the word. I think when something goes from being known by few, in this case the african american and street culture, to being pop culture people start to take offense because they stereotype the words for themselves. Those of you who associate this with race are putting a much heavier connotation on it than is necessary. The term started as an endearing term for anyone who is a trusted friend. Even if it was started mostly by African Americans it has been absorbed by pop culture and can be used by people of any race along the same lines of how there are many rappers who say dude now which I think most people would agree was started by the predominantly white surfer/skater crowd. I think you should all check out the definition in the urban dictionary online www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=homeboy this is similar to Wikipedia where you can add your own definition. The thumbs up and thumbs down ratings on the side of each definition goes to show what most readers think of each one. As you can see all positive ratings were given to the definitions depicting a trusting friend. Anything negative has been viewed as wrong by most readers. Not saying this is the be all end all but i think it will help clarify how most people view the term especially since it is pop culture now. P.S. I would hate to think what you all thought of homey the clown P.P.S. If I knew JT2 or JT3 on a friend level I would have zero qualms about calling them homeboy to their face. I have called my 56 year old father that on various occassions. P.P.P.S. Everyone here should watch the South Park episode where Cartman hits Token with a rock for calling him fat and the FBI turns it into a hate crime. I think it would do us all a world of good.

somehow in your researched history of homeboy, you neglected one very salient fact...that it has been used as a pejorative for black guys...old and young.
that colors (pun intended) the usage of the word.
also, dude started in the 50's and 60s with black guys calling themselves that...not the surfer crowd. my grandmother calls people dudes..and ironically its not in a totally positive light.
wikkepedia's rating system is irrelevant, as all demographics don't contribute equally....
my own personal experience, and that of other black people holds more weight imo.
are you actually attempting to posit there is no negative and/or sterotypical usage assigned to homeboy?
shows the shortcomings of internet research...hahahah

What would it take to make everyone happy in this issue? A stirring interpretive dance number to "The Devil Went Down to Georgia".
