The good news is that it would seem that III is not going anywhere this season.
The bad news is that GU doesn't seem to have a long-term plan for how to offer him a competitive salary.
We'll have to see how things play out... :0

I hope things work out. Its certainly a bad sign that Georgetown had 3 months to negotiate with III over the summer and we haven't even heard the inklings of a deal.

I had started a thread months ago asking at what point alums, students, fans, and others with a stake in Georgetown's success should become vocal about this. It seemed like the consensus was that it'll work itself out. I'm still not so sure.

So that we can fully rehash the old posts, I'll point out the possibility that JTIII and his advisors are being unreasonable and the university has already offered a fair deal. It takes two to tango.

That is entirely possible. I don't think anyone has ever said that there's no way that III is the reason for no new contract. But it still means that the situation has not "worked itself out." Regardless of who is doing what, it's been 4 months, and our coach is not locked up long term.

My problem with that is that the University's estimation of a "Fair Deal" is almost certain to be well below market and short-sighted. JTIII gave the University millions of dollars of free PR in his first three years there. I guarantee that was not factored into any GU analysis.

SFHoya makes an excellent point about how much a successful basketball or football program can help a university as a whole--especially in terms of reputation and admissions. That being said, if we haven't heard anything by Midnight Madness, a little noise might be in order--something small to start like a letter to the editor at the Hoya, but possibly escalating. Doesn't hurt to push both sides and for JTIII to see how much he needs to stay here.

Doesn't hurt to push both sides and for JTIII to see how much he needs to stay here. It's completely uncorrelated to reputation and admissions. Have you seen the top 20 schools? To refresh your memory: 1. Harvard 2. Cal Tech 3. Yale 4. MIT 5. Stanford 6. Princeton 7. Brown 8. Columbia 9. Amherst 10. Dartmouth 11. Wellesley 12. Penn 13. Notre Dame 14. Swarthmore 15. Cornell 16. Georgetown 17. Rice 18. Williams 19. Duke 20. UVA There's what, 5 recognizable sports names on that whole list? And the only one that's really high has a very specific differentiating factor, that being one of if not the most-respected private school on the west coast. Georgetown is competing for a bunch of dodgeball targets, not superfans. Let's call it like it is. We want our basketball team to be successful because we're big Hoya fans. But Georgetown, the school, is fine without Hoya basketball. I want us to get a deal done as much as the next guy on this board which is about 1 billion times more than any of the Economist-memorizers I sat next to in Map of the Modern World.

I want to echo Giga's observation that there is no meaningful correlation between basketball success and academic competitiveness. Researchers have looked into this (it's exceedingly easy to study), and nothing turns up. Georgetown's rise in profile through the 1980s corresponded with a good basketball team, but was driven by the academic administration of the school and its status as the premier University in the DC metro area, along with numerous other factors.
I want to echo everyone else's comments that we need to freaking pay JTIII whatever it takes to keep him here and I will lose my mind if they mess this up. Seriously.

I said JTIII has provided millions in PR (and positive PR, nonetheless). His winning teams have also provided a valuable service to the school -- something the students appreciate and the school has been unable to replicate in other sports, despite an obvious failed attempt in football. Academics trying to correlate PR to academic rep aren't going to find much. This is long term brand building you're talking about, mixed in with many other factors. An academician's level of understanding is useless here. I've seen several of those studies and they are lacking in sophistication. I make no bones that I want Thompson to stay b/c I'm a fan. But I truly believe there is a very good business case for it as well, especially when you consider that Georgetown is not a straight for profit institution.

Isn't it true that his contract expires at the END of this upcoming season? I know it may have been nice to give him the raise right after the final 4, but isnt it possible they are just waiting until the end of the contract to begin negotiations?

No. Having a lame duck coach is a huge liability in terms of recruiting, plus it'd be a significant deviation from standard practice by Universities. Not to mention the fact that there is absolutely no reason to wait to extend JT3 at all.

When was this attempted? Oh come on. You may not like the half-assedness of the attempt, but we've sunk quite a decent amount of money into football for no real return. From public comments to private, there's no doubt that Georgetown administrators want more school spirit. I'm sure non-DI-A football appealed in a safe way. How much has gone into that field? So we can continue to lose, and people not attend. I wish that had been earmarked for a real competitive sport. I don't mean to bash football, but I feel like the school purposefully deemphasized basketball and emphasized football, hoping the latter united the student body, when the former was in a much better position. And I think the reasons for doing so are not good ones.

There's nothing to even merit rehashing this discussion. I'm fairly certain III already got his deal, or maybe he didn't ... but WHY DWELL ON IT!?
Further, why do you think we'd even know about this? Wait for a decent press release when the timing is right. A lot of other things going on.
I'd bet that things have already been arranged. It's certainly not our right to know. Do you really expect a random press release in the off season?? Find something else to occupy your thoughts. Yapping on the internet on something you know nothing about does absolutely nothing. Wise fools.
You want to have an impact? Go donate some of your money to the school.
