Appalachian is Hot, Hot, Hot!
This certainly throws the Big 10/11 for a loop. Anybody know if this was the inaugural game of the Big Ten Network? The Conference has been in a stand off with Comcast, which is refusing to pay the enormous fee being demanded to show Big Ten games. Given this result, I think Comcast's hand in the negotiations just got strengthened.

Don't worry, Former. My family tried to raise me as a Cub fan, but I got over it. . .

Lee is clutch, no doubt. Just look at his performance in Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS.
Yesterday was one of those classic Wrigley Field games. A stiff SW wind was blowing and even marginal balls were gettitng out (nothing marginal about Lee's HR though). I remarked to my friend that the homeruns were going to come yesterday, it was just a matter of making sure that no one was on when they did. Aardsma was dreadful. But then Cotts gave up today's slam to AJP. I don't think I want Cotts back.

Gold, giving away bleacher tickets on the Friday before a long weekend?!? Has the bottom dropped out of the secondary market, or are you being magnanimous?

My views on New Comiskey/the Cell/Sox Park.
I have always felt that the rap on New Comsikey when it first opened was largely undeserved. Sitting in the first level, it was always a great place to see a game. The walkways were spacious, food and bathrooms plentiful, and the sightlines were adequate. That being said, the renovations have been successful. The park is more visually interesting and scenic. Also, knocking rows off the upper deck gave the appearance that it is less steep (although it isn't)
A lot of you probably didn't go to Old Comiskey. It was, charitably, a dump. Baseball stadiums are industrial buildings. They wear out and get obsolete with time. Old Comiskey, with its 1910 bathrooms and indescribable smells, had long outlived its usefulness.
And let's talk about what's happening on the field. Nice win last night against the Angels. Gracia has a bad habit of falling behind early, but the offense pulld him out of it. I always get worried with West Coast road trips, although we're 500 so far on this one. Indians up next.

Showcase, my apologies if I'm intruding on your turf. . .
I'm listening to the 9th inning of last Year's Game 4 against the Astros.
The Banners go up tonight, and we open against the Indians.
White Sox baseball returns.

A virtual high-five to Showcase, Hoyarooter, Burleith, 3Generation (and any of the other White Sox fans on the Board whom I missed). It's been a blast sharing this season with you. [Rooter, I hope your two-year old continues to grow in wisdom, grace and Sox-ness.] Best wishes to all.

A few random thoughts 22 hours after the fact.
1) The White Sox are the World Champions. It's true. It happened. I was lucky enough to see it. I watched the game at the home of a friend who lost his father way too young. To him, the White Sox are a link to his father's memory. There are thousands and thousands of stories like that all over Chicago.
2) The White Sox won the World Series without a .300 hitter, a 20 game winner, or a guy with more than 100 RBIs. It shows what can be accomplished without star power if everyone contributes.
3) With respect to the earlier posts, I too cannot stand Hawk Harrelson, and I listen to the games on the radio. However, it should not be forgotten that the White Sox had John Rooney on the radio, who is one of the best play-by-play men in broadcasting. Last night, after 18 years, Rooney called his last White Sox game. I will really miss him. But what a way to go.
4) The City announced the parade route for tomorrow. Motorcade from Sox Park through the South Side -- Bridgeport, Bronzeville, Pilsen, Chinatown, and Halsted St. (for those of you outside of Chicago, those neighborhoods are 1) Irish, 2) African-American, 3) Mexican, 4) Chinese, and 5) Greek). Then a ticker tape parade up LaSalle Street from the Board of Trade to the River. My office overlooks the parade route. Tomorrow is also my birthday. What a present!
Chicago White Sox, World Champions!
GO YOU WHITE SOX!

The White Sox win the Pennant! The White Sox win the Pennant! The White Sox win the Pennant!
No air raid sirens in Chicago (unlike '59). But church bells and many, many happy faces.
Showcase, thanks for setting up this thread. You're a prophet.

White Sox winner! I was at Sox Park Wednesday night for the 5-4 win -- an incredible game. When the Gooch hit the 3 run homer, the place was literally shaking. This game may have been better. The bells at Nativity of Our Lord (37th and Lowe) are ringing.
GO YOU WHITE SOX!
By the way Rooter, my three year olds shout "Go White Sox" all the time and I think my wife and I are damn good parents.

Errata correction to earlier post.
Podesnik is not light hitting -- his average is one of the highest on the team. But not much power.

Chicago White Sox, American League Central Champions!
Amazing win last night. Ozzie fields the Scrubs, augmented by the light hitting Crede and Podsednik. They gut out a one-run victory in 13. Cleveland crowd silenced, as well as the national media who accused the White Sox of not respecting the "integrity of the game" because they did the entirely sensible thing of playing subs after clinching.
I'm getting concerned about Bobby Jenks. It seems like every time he comes in to close, he gives up a run.
But let's enjoy it right now. White Sox are divisional champs.

Rooter, I'm not panicking yet, but I'm very nervous. Last I saw, we were tied with the Twinkies in the top of the 10th. Indians beat up on the hapless Royals (natch). If the Sox can't pull it out tonight, then it's 3 1/2 games up, two more this weekend in the Rollerdome, and then 3 with the Indians at Comiskey.
This is a bad confluence of events. The Indians are now hotter than the 69 Mets were at the end of that season. The Sox sound like they've been hit over the head with a canoe paddle. Honestly, Buerhle was on the radio this morning talking in this creepy dead-pan voice about the possibility of getting swept by Cleveland. Mark, dude, you're a professional pitcher on a first place team! Even if you're afraid of the Indians, don't say it. Keep fighting.
I have lit votive candles underneath my pictures of Billy Pierce and Ted Lyons. Anybody have any extra rosaries?
Go you White Sox!

Dear Nation --
Any thoughts on the upcoming series against that Other Team? After back to back sweeps, I fear a let down is inevitable, particularly with the ineffectual Jose Contreras pitching the middle game on Saturday. Also, Derek Lee is on fire (two HR's today). Prior is probably making his first start on Sunday. The Cubs may oddly be caring more about this series than the White Sox, as it may be their last chance to right their listing ship.
I hope for the best, of course. Hoyarooter, I assume you're teaching your two-year old the finer points of the hit and run and the words to Na Na Na Goodbye. One of my three year olds is upstairs sleeping in her White Sox t-shirt. Her twin sister demanded that I turn on the radio before bed because she wanted to hear John Rooney yell "White Sox Winner!"
Go you White Sox,
Signed,

Garland takes the opener, let's hope Buerhle (pronounced "Burl" by a clueless sports announcer on Chicago radio this morning) follows up.
Currently I'm in my underground bunker located halfway between WGN headquarters and Wrigley Field, trying to ride out the idiocy of the Red Sox/Cubs series. Two second place teams playing approximately 540 ball meet, and the Tribune-owned media is treating it like it's the World Series. The Sox win their 41st game and it is a small story, below the fold, bottom corner.
I'm starting to believe in this team. However, I am becoming deeply concerned about Ozzie's on field decisionmaking. I went to a game against the Angels last week. Two outs, bottom of the ninth, two on. Ozzie let's the perpetually lighthitting Harris bat (no harm, he walks) and then pinchhits Thomas for the leadoff man, Podsednik. Thomas walks, Osuna pinch runs. Maybe I'm missing something, but why let Harris bat? Thomas is on the bench, use him there. Why pinch hit for Podsedink? And if you really don't want to use Podsednik, pinch hit for him using Konerko or Gload, who were both on the bench. Mystifying.
My fear is that if (big if) the Sox make the post season, a more experienced manager will dance on Ozzie, much like how Pinella outmanaged Manuel back in 2000.

Terrific win yesterday, and on the threshhold of sweeping the Cubs. Contreras hung tough, and the Sox exploited the inevitable bullpen collapse. Let's win today. Go you White Sox!

If Domes are so great, why are the Twins so desperate to build a new stadium?
But on to a more important topic, the Sox beat the Orioles tonight 3-2. Jon Garland picks up his 7th win. Amazing.
Go you White Sox!

Seven straight! Best record in baseball. Jon Garland is 6-0. This is really, really fun. Buerhle tomorrow. Let's sweep the Jays.
By the way, two pitchers in the majors have records of 6-0: Jon Garland and Dontrelle Willis. Both were traded by the Cubs.

Congratulations to Jon Garland. 4 hit complete game and a 5-0 start; outstanding. And the Twins lost.
Garland should be a favorite this year, although I've spent so much time waiting for him to break out that I'm still holding back. Still, he's having an unbelieveable start.
Love Shingo, too, although I think his magic pitch has been figured out by the Indians (and soon others)
Any MLB Radio/XM subscribers out there? I was listening to the Dodgers game today, and got Rick Monday on the call (forgettable former Cub, by the way). Where was Vin Scully? Is he at the point in his career where he takes days off?

Didn't see the game tonight, although I understand it was a one run victory (4-3). Nice to have the ship righted after three losses. However, the lack of offense the past week has been absolutely maddening (the Sox stranded 16 last night?).
I have the distinction of being born in a household of Cub fans, and since I lived on the Howard El line, I went to a tremendous number of Cubs games when I was young. But then I travelled the baseball Road to Damascus and was suddenly converted during the magical summer of 1977. I have never looked back.
A question for the Board: who is your favorite White Sox? Currently, it has to be Buerhle; an outstanding pticher, little attitude, and a guy who is good for a sub 2 hour game.
