4 in the top-11 is solid. SJU creeps in at #24, impressive.

I don’t see Cal & Stanford as long-term fits for the ACC. There’s still the chance that in the next five years FSU, Clemson & UNC decide to leave the league. Things would then get interesting.

I know that schools game the rankings to improve their scores. Doesn’t surprise me that some of the inputs get fudged.

Classless. How does a school put that out there?

Why not just write "I've never actually bothered to listen to Ed Cooley speak", it's shorter and more concise. we are all rooting for Cooley to succeed, but the knee-jerk defensiveness on the part of so many here is getting tiresome. I think it's fine to voice the opinion that the run-up to this first season has been less than inspiring. Not sure why the same posters feel the need to jump in to try to stifle any hint of criticism over and over again - especially when these are the same posters who were tirelessly, unrelentingly negative the past 5 seasons. I’ve been watching GU basketball for 40 years now. I just call it as I see it. Some posters just love to jump on folks who may have a different opinion. I guess it’s just the nature of message boards.

So Georgetown, Denver, San Diego St and Stanford can battle for the “National” championship…. While I understand the sentiment, it quickly leads one to a rather awkward and unsavory place of trying to determine "how many foreigners is too many?" Presumably the answer is not "one foreigner is too many," else we would consider the national title Georgetown won with Giannis to be null and void (or, for that matter, the 1984 basketball title won with the Jamaican-born Patrick Ewing). But choosing anything other than >0 is inherently arbitrary. Marshall just needs to exploit foreigners to win a few more NCAA men’s soccer titles to force the committee to examine the situation.

Lots of excuses on why we won’t be good right away. It’s easy to build slowly and set expectations low while you take in $6 million. Well done. Let’s see how Pitino does. Comparing Gtowns 2-37 conference record the last 2 seasons to the Johnnies 15-24 should probably be where this conversation starts. It should probably end in discussing long term vision - building a culture and a foundation for long-term winning vs a win now because our coach will be retired in less than 5 years mentality. I'm completely understanding to those who say they'd rather have the latter and thus passing on Pitino was an error. I dont necessarily agree, but it seems like a completely valid opinion to me. But the pursing of lips toward the lowering of expectations as the season approaches rings hollow to me. Any CEO worth his salt (and CEO is exactly what a high major CBB head coach is now in many ways) gets announced and speaks in mountaintops, especially when taking over a company in the proverbial gutter. "This company will be great again." "We will make this place the best again in no time!" "The sky is the limit for this company." "I am here to succeed, and I don't expect our shareholders to wait long to see those dividends." And then Q4 is coming to a close and expectation setting for the coming fiscal year is upon us. "Listen I think we are putting together the pieces to have major success. But any good building takes time. And while we hope to see a big Q1, I think setting our sights on Q3 and Q4 goals should be the focus." Pretty standard fare. Ed is a salesman. A marketer. A strategist. With a track record. He is our new CEO. And he's doing everything I'd expect from him thus far, and anybody who paid attention to him at Fairfield or Providence stops. He's got a formula and has earned the benefit of allowing him to employ it imo. I hear what you’re saying. I just prefer my CEO’s to be confident & inspiring. I would have agreed with your thinking 5-10 years ago, but the basketball landscape has changed. The world is moving much more quickly. Winning sometime down the road is uninspiring. Between NIL and transfers there are no delays. I’m cautiously optimistic though.

Can we rescind Marshal’s 2020 championship? We really should have won back-to-back if it wasn’t for the unfortunate timing of the season and all the players we lost to the draft.

I would say Cooley’s attention has been focused on engaging current students, former players and Hoop Club members. The groups that have been neglected are alums who are not Hoop Club members and Hoya fans who are not alumni- the vast majority of HoyaTalk members. Perhaps, Hoop Club members are seen as a fertile pool for NIL contributions.

Schools like SJU and UConn are all in on winning NCAA basketball championships. GU on the other hand would like to win, but the “right way.” Meaning integrity and academics serve as frictions to achieving an end.

No one seems to make a fuss over having Thompson, Ewing, Mourning, Mutombo, Williams kids on the basketball team, earning a free legacy ride. Sons of multimillionaires, no less. 😉

It’s easy for a first generation Hoya to sign a petition against legacy admissions. It’s a different story when you become a parent of a smart child wanting to gain admission. I’m all for legacy admissions being the deciding factor between two otherwise equal candidates. It’s my understanding that that’s where it may come into play. Your understanding is not correct. What’s your understanding? I do know the legacies are reconsidered towards the end of the process. I don’t believe that under qualified legacies are admitted, maybe with some rare exceptions. I have been interviewing candidates for over 15 years. Perhaps, I’m being lied to by the admissions office representatives. None of the legacies I’ve interviewed have been admitted, zero.

I do like the ‘24 recruiting class that Cooley has secured.

Also, a $12 million plus (2019) nest egg is pretty good considering her humble Native American roots and $179,000 salary (2019). 😉

We just need to win games. You can hype the program all you want, but ultimately it comes down to wins & losses. This line of thinking has helped to accelerate the program into the land of complete irrelevancy. See above ^^^.

In only the second year of its existence, NIL money has already ramped up to astounding levels. Providence has exceeded the million-dollar level even though the school may have walked away from some recruits. Napolillo stated, “If a recruit’s biggest concern is the size of their check, we tell them PC is not for you.” Napolillo continued: “We have built something special here at PC, and we have done it in the right way. We have all the elements in place to have a successful program.” I call BS on Napolillo's statement. Let's see if Garwey Dual sticks around for a sophomore year. It’ll be interesting to see if Cooley built it or “we” built it.

We just need to win games. You can hype the program all you want, but ultimately it comes down to wins & losses. Please stop. I think you've posted this for a decade and it's been wrong every time you've posted it. All the pieces matter - building relationships in the area helps you in recruiting, convincing people to support the program financially helps improve every aspect of the program, and convincing people to show up and making basketball an enjoyable experience and something people are excited about creates a home court atmosphere which helps you win. Part of the reason Patrick Ewing never won is that he never did these things. You’re putting words in my mouth. Of course local recruiting, donations, etc. matter. I just think you don’t get people in the stands on a regular basis if you don’t win. If you lose, all the promoting in the world won’t fill the arena.
