Mike Pence’s legal counsel is in conversations with the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection about the possibility of testimony from the former vice president, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said Friday. Cheney, the committee’s vice chair, told ABC News’s Jon Karl that the panel has been having discussions with Pence’s team and said she still hopes Pence will testify before the committee in the near future. Earlier this week, Pence signaled that he might be open to testifying if invited to do so. “Look, he played a critical role on January 6. If he had succumbed to the pressure that Donald Trump was putting on him, we would have had a much worse constitutional crisis,” Cheney said. “And I think that he has clearly, as he’s expressed, concerns about executive privilege, which, you know, I have tremendous respect. I think it’s, you know, hugely important constitutional issue in terms of separation of powers.” Cheney said she believes in executive privilege and its importance but noted that “when the country has been through something, as grave as [Jan. 6] was, everyone who has information has an obligation to step forward.” SOURCE: Washington Post, August 19, 2022 I hope I'm wrong, but I expect nothing to come of this.

The iron law of scandals involving Donald Trump is that they will always be stupid, and there will always be more of them. Trump scandals—the Russia investigation; Trump’s first impeachment, over his efforts to blackmail Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky; the insurrection on January 6—have something else in common: All these catastrophes result from Trump’s refusal to divorce the office of the presidency and the good of the country from his personal desires. Now Trump’s apparent squirreling away of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, and his outrage over the Justice Department’s investigation of that conduct, speaks once more to his vision of his own absolute authority—even after he has departed the presidency. It’s a vision that places Trump himself, rather than the Constitution and the rule of law, as the one true source of legitimate political power. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/08/trump-fbi-mar-a-lago-classified-documents/671192/The ultimate narcissist at work. Me, me, me, I'm all that matters. Nothing surprising here, but his actions prior to his election didn't have anywhere near the tragic impact for the country.

Meanwhile the University of California Board of Regents is threatening to block UCLA's move to the Big 16, or whatever the heck they will be.

Very sad. Lou was diagnosed on his 36th birthday.
The head of our antitrust group contracted ALS and died a number of years ago. I guess he was around 50.

Hey look! There is an open thread for the purpose of discussing all the things you love/detest about Pat, Ronny, Jack, Lee, etc. Would y'all be so kind as to keep said discussion here, instead of putting it in EVERY SINGLE OTHER THREAD? Thanks in advance. I blame (multiple choice question, take your pick): A. Climate change B. The last guy C. The Democrats

Seems like we have a really good chance with Parker. Him, Allen, and Miranda cover all 3 bases and would allow us to be very selective in the transfer market to cover any holes. We know we have Mozone as the only definitive senior but I’d assume Q is only here for 1 as well as 1 of Heath/Murray/Akok. Could see a transfer from bottom of rotation so we’d likely have 4 slots next year. I'll take the over on 4 scholarships available heading into 2023-2024. Yeah, given recent history, that seems like a fairly safe bet.

Yes! And please let them do it SOON, i.e., convict him of any of the alleged crimes he has committed. If they wait until he announces, 45 will frame it as revenge and persecution and fire up the unhinged a$$clowns. They have to get it done before he announces. Also, think of the precedents that 45 has set before us -- the corruption, the lying, the obstruction, the inciting, the weaponizing of the justice dept and the IRS, and now the blatant violations of the Espionage Act -- and the opportunity we have to cement some core democratic values by charging 45 and declaring that no one is above the law, that we have in place institutions and processes to address unlawful actions that threaten the very foundation of our republic. If we let all of that slide, it will be a whole different declaration about our legal system and not one that bodes well for the future. "Nail him up! Nail him up, I say!" (Monty Python reference - can you identify the movie and scene?) Since no one has attempted to answer this, I will give it a shot, and go with Life of Brian, which I think was also the film that gave us the legendary character Biggus Dickus.

Hasn't been a very good week for Baby Donnie, the Big Insurrectionist has it? And to think that a couple days ago, the vile Republicans were thinking this would benefit them politically. Still going there, Republicans? The incendiary language coming from the Congressional d-bags was truly revolting. And yet, of course, there are still millions in the imbecile brigade who will continue to believe whatever lies Trump lays on them because, even though he's a pathological liar, according to them he's another George Washington.

Well, here's one Fox talking point, for those unaware. The FBI planted documents in their raid on Mar-a-Lago. The evidence? Hey, who needs evidence? This sounds like something that would only come from people who know the FBI found some very bad things in those boxes. That may be true, but how likely is it that Fox would have any knowledge of that? I think it's more likely just the Fake News Network doing what the Fake News Network does.

Given that he’s on Morgan State he’s keeping it in the family since he’s joining Broadus. I hope this is a stepping stone for an eventual gig here and he’s just building up a resume to return to the Hoyas. If Austin Freeman's goal is to coach in college, he's smart to make the move from high school to college in this role. I imagine after a year or two, he can transition to an assistant role either at Morgan State or elsewhere. While the Wright/Freeman years never had NCAA success, I really loved those teams and generally those teams were filled with good guys. I always look fondly on those teams, even if they frustrated us in November. March?

Rudy! Rudy! Rudy! The Atlanta-area district attorney investigating Donald Trump’s effort to overturn the 2020 election is insisting that Rudy Giuliani appear for a grand jury interview Tuesday, rejecting his effort for a last-ditch postponement that Giuliani said is the result of a medical procedure. But Giuliani made an emergency motion on Monday to postpone his hearing, saying a recent medical procedure left him unable to fly for several weeks. Giuliani cited an Aug. 2 letter from his doctor, Eric Neibart, saying he was “not yet cleared for air travel” after his surgery. Notably, the DA’s office said it had “obtained records” that show Giuliani made a mid-July purchase of “multiple airline tickets with cash, including tickets to Rome, Italy, and Zurich, Switzerland, for travel dates ranging between July 22, 2022, and July 29, 2022.” “All of these dates were after the Witness’s medical procedure,” Willis said in the filing. www.politico.com/news/2022/08/08/georgia-da-rejects-giuliani-effort-to-postpone-aug-9-grand-jury-appearance-00050378Hopefully he had a lobotomy.

This month's jobs report must really depress HoyaTalk "Republicans" as they root for Biden's failure IOT boost their racist/fascist cult leader. Instead, the MAGA GOP would rather kiss the a*@ of racist/fascist Viktor Orban. Not to mention Infrastructure, the CHIPS Act, Gun Safety legislation, and Inflation Reduction Act on the verge of passage, the killing of Al Zawahiri. And holding together NATO in support of Ukraine in the face of Putin's war (Putin being the MAGA GOP's BFF). But I hear that "Biden is no better." What did the orange psycho accomplish aside from subverting American democracy? The hot labor market continued to show rapid growth in July, with employers adding 528,000 jobs, despite fears of a recession. The unemployment rate edged down to 3.5 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In July, the labor market continued to show stunning growth that afforded workers historic wage gains and more leverage at their jobs. www.washingtonpost.com/business/2022/08/05/jobs-report-july-2022/Well, yes, but here's the thing, as Monk used to say. I read that some analyst from Bank of America said that the jobs number is actually a really bad thing, as it means that high inflation will continue with us for some time. Damned if you do, and damned if you don't.

Everybody knew this at the time, and many didn't care. My view on Justice K is that he was reasonably competent as a lower court judge, but that the last guy and the Republicans could have easily found someone without so much baggage (like Gorsuch, for example), and they just didn't give a damn.
