Jordan Riley: 7 pts, 3-15 2 pt, 1-2 FT, 0-5 3pt, 3 reb (2 off), 2 asst, 1 st, 2 bl, 1 TO -Riley and Mutombo both played a lot more today. Riley was kind of playing point guard for much of the game. -His jump shot just is not working this summer. He took a lot of pull up 15-18 footers today, and did not hit any of them. You don’t see many 3-20 shooting lines, even in a summer league. www.casualhoya.com/2022/8/1/23287390/kenner-league-notes-july-30-31-georgetown-hoyas-mcdonough3-20, ick. Although I do think that Aminu had a couple lines like that last season.

Where to start...
One of the best things about growing up in Los Angeles in the 1960's was being able to listen to Vinnie call the Dodger games and Chick Hearn call the Laker games, and happily for us fans, it continued on for decades. I can share two things about listening to Vinnie, one of which I am sure is not unique, but likely shared by (formerly) young baseball fans across the country, and the second of which may be.
When I was a boy, I had an early bedtime, much to my chagrin ("we don't care what other parents do, we think this is best for you"). If the Dodgers were playing at home or in San Francisco, I would put the radio on my nightstand on very low, and listen to the Dodgers while in bed. I only did that for the Angels if they were playing the White Sox. If I would hear someone coming to check on me (typically my dad), I would turn off the radio and pretend to be asleep, and then turn it back on when he would leave. Chances are I probably fell asleep with the radio on more than once, but I don't recall that.
When the Dodgers moved to Chavez Ravine, my uncle got season tickets through his business, so my parents would take me to a few games per season. My mother hated baseball, but she was a good sport, and would typically take something to read. I would always, and I mean always, take my transistor radio to the game, so I could listen to Vinnie call the game I was watching. And I wasn't alone in this rather oddball activity. EVERYBODY (or nearly everybody) did it, because Vinnie was such a pleasure to listen to, and he would always add some story that made him worth listening to even while at the game. He was just the best. So many of his calls are iconic, and not just in baseball. I saw his call on The Catch again last night, and like so much else, it's perfect. He just had the knack for saying the right thing in the right way at the right time.
I actually have a Vinnie-autographed baseball. About ten or twelve years ago, a former partner of mine did some work in Dallas for one of Vinnie's daughters, and Vinnie told him that if he was ever in LA while the Dodgers were at home, he should come to the press box to meet Vinnie. So my friend did happen to be in LA at one point, and the Dodgers were at home, so I got my firm's tickets for the game. We went up to the press box before the game, and as one might expect, Vinnie couldn't have been more gracious and charming. He gave my friend an autographed ball, and my friend then gave it to me, saying I would appreciate it more than he did, which is true, of course.
I'm sure the Dodgers will retain Vinnie's "it's time for Dodger baseball" pre-game announcement more or less forever.
RIP, Vin. Hopefully you are reunited with your beloved Sandi. We will miss you down here.

The Department of Defense and the U.S. Army have confirmed in court filings that some former senior Trump administration officials had their phones wiped at the end of former President Trump's term, deleting any text messages that could shed insight into the events leading up to and surrounding the Jan. 6 insurrection. www.axios.com/2022/08/02/jan6-riots-defense-army-messagesWow. Just wow.

So I guess the despicable MAGA GOP hates veterans, too? Perhaps I'm being too harsh. MAGA GOPers are just willing to throw veterans aside for crass performative politics? Sound better? Senate Republicans on Wednesday blocked a bill to help veterans exposed to toxic burn pits weeks after the measure initially sailed through the Senate with 84 votes, angering Democrats, veterans groups and comedian Jon Stewart, a leading proponent to aid the community. Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), chairman of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, was particularly incensed by the turn of events. Tester, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), other lawmakers and Stewart on Thursday morning joined veterans outside the Capitol — who originally came to Washington to see the bill pass — to assail the GOP. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/07/28/republicans-burn-pits-veterans/WTH. Whatever it is, I'm against it.

Trump still has his supporters on the network, but the dynamic between a former president openly flirting with another run for the White House and Rupert Murdoch’s top media asset is definitely changing. For one thing, Fox is more focused on President Biden, a subject of relentless prime-time attacks, than Trump, and the network didn’t air Trump’s speech this week in Washington, D.C., even as it did air a portion of an earlier address Tuesday by former Vice President Mike Pence. “Trump’s superpower is getting all the coverage. That’s not happening anymore. Fox is not covering him 24 hours a day,” said Daniel Cassino, a media expert who wrote a 2016 book about the network’s influence over American politics. “So it seems that is leading to frustration that he’s not dominating Fox the way he did before.” That tension boiled over this week, when Trump lashed out at Fox and its flagship morning program, “Fox & Friends,” after two of the show’s longtime co-hosts threw cold water on polling suggesting young voters felt Trump was the best choice for Republicans looking to win back the White House. Other Murdoch-owned media properties have separately fired off editorials critical of Trump in the wake of damaging revelations from the House panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. thehill.com/homenews/3577133-dynamic-shifts-between-fox-news-donald-trump/amp/Whatever they choose to do, it's still going to be a constant stream of BS.

Fair, although I was talking explicitly about switching screens, which seems like a non-starter for Q. The other piece of irony is the defensive splits that year were much better with Tim at center than Q. If you asked me what the big difference was for our run of best defense, it was having Bile and Pickett together on the wings. While I don't love the overhelping, it's certainly a lot easier when you have a ton of length on the court to make up for it. We've too consistently been a 3-guard team trying to play a defense that requires length to help and recover. A lineup of Spears, Murray, Mozone, Akok, Q would be more length than we normally have (and if Bass can get into the rotation at some point that would only help) I favor a defense that has more switching flexibility. And even with Q on the court you can switch 1-4 and play drop coverage with the center, which is very possible and common. I assume switching 1-4 with drop cover at the 5 is the plan. And with Akok at the 4, we should have the length and athleticism to replicate what worked in 2021 post-Covid pause. Assuming Akok is able to stay on the court.

I'm not sure I understand the criticism of Ewing's statement. After all, Seton Hall = Coppin State, and Creighton = American, right? Seems the same to me.

The funny thing about Garvey is that during his playing days he was regarded as too much of a goodie two shoes, although he was very popular here in LA. I guess the difference between he and Mickey (and Whitey, too, for that matter) is that he seemed holier than thou and not "one of the boys." So I guess his hypocrisy level was regarded as pretty high. But hey, that wasn't my original premise. Maury Wills! The bigger difference is that Mickey and Whitey were far better players. There's no question about that, but they're also Yankees, and rightly or wrongly, that gives them special dispensation.

There are definitely examples of teams that have had 20 wins (pre conference selection) that do not make the NCAA tournament in other major conferences. To be fair, this most often happens in bad conferences (like the ACC last year). Outside the major conferences, it happens too. And 19 win teams fall short frequently, too. 2022: Wake Forest - 23-9 going into tournament selection 2021: Everyone played fewer games, so fewer teams hit 20 2020: No tournament 2019: NC State (22-11 at tournament selection) Like anything else, it's situational. Teams that win 20 games are usually pretty good, and so they make the tournament. It's really the margins where it matters. The one common factor with Wake Forest and NC State is that they had bad OOCs: Wake Forest (2022): OOC had 4 275+ teams, one ranked 262, and two more at 223 and 233. So, Wake Forest ran up a good record OOC, and then in a bad ACC, got most of its ACC wins against bad ACC teams, like Pittsburgh and NC State. NC State (2019): OOC contained 7 games 275+, plus another at 270. Ironically, NC State actually got a good win OOC win against Auburn that year, as well as a pretty good win against Penn State, but it didn't matter. This is a good example of a team that could have probably made the NCAA tournament with better scheduling. But they didn't. They got an NIT invite. A good example of a really marginal 20 win team that DID make the NCAA tournament (but barely) as an at large is Seton Hall in 2019. Seton Hall (2019): OOC had two 300+ opponents, and others at 240 and 201. So not a great OOC, but not bad either. It's notable that Seton Hall actually had a great win against Kentucky, a pretty good win against Maryland, beat NCAA 5 seed Marquette (twice), and only lost to Villanova by 2 in the BET. Seton Hall had finished the Big East 9-9 and won two BET games. This is a great example of why this year's schedule is problematic. Seton Hall barely made it in that scenario, but had a great win (Kentucky), and two really good wins against Marquette, and another tournament team (and an away win) against Maryland. Our schedule is (a) worse than Seton Hall's in 2019, (b) our schedule essentially allows only one chance for a really good win (Texas Tech) and (c) our only chance for an away win is at Texas Tech, and we will be a huge underdog there. So, even if we beat Texas Tech, unless we kick some butt in the Big East, our record at 10-10 in the Big East would probably be worse than Seton Hall's in 2019. We'd probably be bubble, at best. People can claim that strength of schedule doesn't matter all they want, but it does. This is a lot to take in. I'll try the Cliff Notes (or eNotes for the younger generation) version: - 20-win teams missing the NCAAT is pretty rare - the last BE on the bubble in that situation actually made the tournament ("barely" making it in as a 10 seed) - good wins (and a moral victory!) for that team included wins against BE teams, which I think we'll have scheduled This whole discussion is silly, but I guess it is fine summer fodder. I'll be thrilled if we are having the same schedule conversation in February but I doubt it. hm Agree. I am going to consider this a how many angels can dance on the head of a pin debate until I actually see us with 20 wins.

It's not the affairs. Mickey Mantle (and many, many others) would find that hilarious. It's his numbers (the on-field ones, that is). Garvey's numbers: .294 batting average, .994 fielding, eight consecutive seasons over 100 RBI, 10x All-Star. Of 64 players in baseball history with 10 or more All-Star appearances, 54 are in the Hall. Excepting Pete Rose and the Steroid Era players still out of the Hall (Bonds. McGwire, etc.), he is one of just three players not in. In fact, in 1995, seven players who scored below Garvey (including Ron Santo, Tony Oliva, Jim Kaat and Minnie Minoso) eventually got in. Players of the 1970's do not fare well in SABR-era stats and Garvey is a prime example. Garvey scores only a 38.0 WAR in an era of lower scoring and comparatively lower production from first basemen. His OPS was .775. Off-field issues are not a prime factor for the writers but there is little no doubt that it comes into play. Garvey was not well liked by some in baseball. It certainly held Dick Allen back for years, even with a .912 OPS. www.cooperstowncred.com/dick-allen-another-chance-hall-of-fame/The funny thing about Garvey is that during his playing days he was regarded as too much of a goodie two shoes, although he was very popular here in LA. I guess the difference between he and Mickey (and Whitey, too, for that matter) is that he seemed holier than thou and not "one of the boys." Maury Wills. Maybe it's my Dodger Blue showing, but he and Luis Aparicio absolutely changed the way the game was played. Luis has (deservedly) been in the Hall for years. What about Maury? Without Maury, do we get Lou Brock and Rickey Henderson? Maury Wills and Steve Garvey are longtime omissions. In both cases the BBWAA has held them back due to off-field incidents: Wills' drug use in the 1980's and Garvey's extramarital affairs. I forgive him. As for Garvey, I'm sure no other Hall of Famers ever had extramarital affairs. And why not? Because they thought about the game. Booze and broads may be great, etc. (Damn Yankees, for those of you who don't go back that far).

Dennis Evans, the 7-foot-1, 210-pound center from Hillcrest High School in Riverside, Calif., is one of the most heavily coveted prospects in the 2023 class. However, that wasn’t always the case for the No. 12 ranked player in the class. “Dennis really isn’t into the blue blood programs,” he continued. “Kansas is probably it (when it comes to the blue blood programs recruiting Dennis Evans), because he has a relationship with Kurtis Townsend.” Currently, Kansas, TCU, Minnesota, California Riverside, Missouri, Florida State, San Diego State, Texas, Oklahoma State, and Georgetown are a few of the programs that have invested quite a bit of time recruiting Evans. However, during Monday’s interview with JayhawkSlant.com, “Kool-Aid” made it perfectly clear that three programs, at least at this stage, have separated themselves from the pack. “Kansas already offered Dennis and he’s considering Kansas,” he said. “He’s considering Kansas heavy. He’s considering Kansas heavy, as well as Minnesota and TCU. Those are probably the three main schools. After this weekend, Chris Beard (Texas) was at the game the other day. They offered him and they made it very clear, them and Oklahoma State, that they would come. Georgetown has definitely been on him. "The funny part is, maybe only one West Coast school is really recruiting him,” he added. “That school is San Diego State. Listen, like I said, Dennis is a kid who is intelligent, grounded and it's not about the NIL with him. It's about the coaching and can you coach? kansas.rivals.com/news/five-star-big-man-dennis-evans-has-scheduled-an-official-visit-to-kansasGuessing that may not bode so well for us. Hmm, Bill Self or Patrick Ewing, Bill Self or Patrick Ewing, let me think.

Not to mention some guy named David Ortiz. Big, big thumbs up for Gil and Minnie for me, but Buck O'Neil, too. No slight to Ortiz intended. I was highlighting the folks who had waited (shamefully in most cases). Maury Wills. Maybe it's my Dodger Blue showing, but he and Luis Aparicio absolutely changed the way the game was played.
