Sounds like one of the "new names" on my original list is being announced today.

"Two names that have come up in conversations with sources about potential fits for the assistant positions are Ryan Devlin, an assistant at George Washington under recently-fired Jamion Christian, and Brenden Straughn, an assistant coach at St. Joe’s."

Dimingus Stevens and Ryan Conway from the DMV area, and Jahari Long from Texas. He was also the guard coach, and Seton Hall had pretty good guards from 2018-2021. OK, and I don't intend this to be contentious. Conway was a frosh this year (I think) with no light, and Stevens is already gone. I'm not arguing that he's a good coach and have no basis for doing so. Just wondering about the accepted narrative as to his DMV recruiting skills (see tweet). I would assume that the relationships and connections (with high school coaches, AAU coaches, and current high school recruits) matter more than the recruits that came to a school that prioritizes NY/NJ recruiting.

Who did Skinn bring to the Hall from the area when he was Willard's assistant there? Dimingus Stevens and Ryan Conway from the DMV area, and Jahari Long from Texas. He was also the guard coach, and Seton Hall had pretty good guards from 2018-2021.

Connecting the dots... Jordan Brooks played his collegiate career at Hampton (2007-2011), including the first three season under former Howard Men's Basketball head coach Kevin Nickelberry. Both guys just saw their respective HCs at Xavier and LSU get fired. Both guys were their schools' respective leads on Tyrell Ward. Seems to me if you brought both of them in as assistants, it could drastically improve local recruiting in a hurry and really put us in a good position if Ward decides to look elsewhere. Pegues also recruited Tyrell Ward for Louisville. I know I shouldn’t get my hopes up about who is liking the tweets from Pegues, but I’m going to get my hopes up about who is liking the tweets from Pegues.

Jaiden Delaire is in the transfer portal now. When he was being recruited in 2018 Georgetown seemed to be very much in the mix. Probably will have a lot of suitors but hopefully Georgetown will reach out to him.
I posted a lot about him on HoyaTalk back in 2017/2018. He’s from my hometown and went to the same NEPSAC high school as me, so it would be pretty fun to root for him next season.

Honest question in this regard—what can or can’t the DOBO do re recruiting? I know that only the three assistants can go on the road to recruit, but how is that defined? If Chris Wright were our DOBO, would he be barred from going to watch WCAC games? I wouldn’t want to set the program up to get hit with ticky-tack NCAA violations because our DOBO went to watch his alma mater play or his buddy coach. The DOBO can recruit on campus. So if a recruit comes on campus for an unofficial or official visit, the DOBO can handle the recruiting responsibilities. They also usually will maintain the recruiting database and coordinate the logistics of visits. I haven't necessarily seen this officially, but it seems like a DOBO and a special assistant can do a little bit more than advertised. For instance, they are not allowed to initiate communications with recruits, but I believe they are not prohibited from responding to recruits. So if a recruit DM's a special assistant or DOBO on Twitter, that staff member is allowed to continue the communication. Also, I'm not positive, but I believe they can go to local games but not in a recruiting capacity, though they might be able to attend representing the school if they attend with the head coach or a recruiting assistant. Again, it gets fuzzy and I thought that was all prohibited, but we've certainly seen non-recruiting assistants doing those recruiting activities in recent years.

How about Frank Martin? He and Ewing seemed to get along very well when we played SC earlier this season. You can go all in on GG Jackson and let Martin be de facto head coach, if you’re determined to keep Ewing as a $4M/year figurehead. I can't see a head coach downgrading to become an assistant coach. Especially someone like Martin who has flair and was fired. He should be able to sit out the rest of his contract and get double paid by being on ESPN or Fox as an analyst or color commentator. Yeah I think there's very little chance Frank Martin would take an assistant job at this point in his career. However Phil Martelli took an assistant job after St. Joseph's fired him in 2018, so it does happen.

At this point it's pretty clear that Coach Ewing will be back next year, but with 2-3 new assistant coaches. So I put together a list of possible candidates based on what I've seen mentioned by Hoya fans so far. I can try to keep this updated as people have other suggestions. More details on the candidates are on the link. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_pP8AlUOmq9077VV-AYLgflAKuUsfIsE6h7SEle3J1w/edit?usp=sharingNew NamesMike Jones Jordan Brooks Tony Skinn Christian Webster Patrick Baldwin Sr Mike Pegues Bill Courtney Karl Hobbs Duane Simpkins Ulric Maligi Kevin Nickelberry Raphael Chillious John Carroll Jamal Brunt Brenden Straughn Steve Clifford Bruce Weber Cuonzo Martin Frank Martin Familiar NamesKenya Hunter Tyler Adams Clinton Crouch Austin Freeman Kevin Broadus David Cox Chris Wright Reggie Cameron Bill Howze Mike Riley Ronny Thompson Jaren Jackson Chuck Driesell Sydney Johnson Mike Brennan Scott Greenman Tavaras Hardy Kevin Sutton Anthony Solomon

As you all saw from Lee Reed’s statement yesterday, the program is committed to making the “necessary changes” to help Coach Ewing succeed. Disregarding the conversation around whether we should be doing a hard reset of the program or not (since it seems like that isn’t happening any time soon), what are some of the things they can do to get us back on the right track? Who are some names for assistant coaches you would target, and what are other culture changes you would implement to bring the program into the 21st century? 1. Hire 2-3 new assistant coaches. I'm not as down on Orr as many people are. He's essentially in the Martelli role and he has what seems to be a strong relationship with the future coach of Oak Hill (the former high school coach for Wilson and Rice). Would I prefer if he was in a Special Advisor type of role? Maybe. But if Ewing decided to keep Orr and get two other assistants I wouldn't hate it. 2. Hire a young alum (preferable that was from DC) to be director of basketball operations. The DOBO can recruit on campus but not travel, so if they have connections to DC they can invite a recruit to campus easily. 3. Hire a director of recruiting. Penn State hired Brian Snow from 247Sports and CBS last year. Maybe there's a DMV recruiting analyst out there who currently has regular communications with high school and AAU coaches and players that could be interested in the role to analyze and identify talent and keep the staff organized around recruiting efforts. Xavier hired Jordan Brooks for the role, and we've already seen them benefit from hiring someone with ties to AAU. 4. Every once in a while, we get glimpses of good social media content. This fan outreach through social media needs to be way more consistent. 5. Student engagement. If PE Jr's comments were reflective of how the program sees student engagement, then the program needs to better partner with Hoya Blue. When was the last time there was a pep rally on campus? It seems like maybe the athletic department (or Hoya Blue on their own) tried to do some of this in the last couple weeks with some free t-shirt giveaways, free pizza, and new big head signs for the students at the games. But it was definitely all too little too late this season. The students wanted to support the team this season, but the program didn't do enough to support the students. 6. Fan engagement. Make sure the fans know they are appreciated, not an afterthought. I think after the 2020 season a survey went out to season ticket holders. I'm sure there were some good ideas in there to implement. Free t-shirts and bobbleheads always attract attention. I always felt like there was an opportunity for a loyalty program where you can earn seat upgrades or whatever based on your actual attendance. 7. Bring the chief of staff out of the shadows. It's hard to tell what Ronny does, so it's hard to know if he's good or bad at his job. Hiding him upsets me more than his presence in the program. So if the university is going to keep him, then they should acknowledge his position and give him a profile on the website. That way at least when he's on NBC announcing a game, they can mention that he works for Georgetown and we can get some free advertising. 8. Defense. The Hoyas were decent at defense in the 2020-2021 season after the COVID pause. Was that coaching? A change in scheme? The personnel? Whatever it was, bring in the right people (coaches, players, support staff) to figure that out again. 9. Pep Band. The pep band conductor left a couple years ago, and the pep band director is retiring this year. In addition, it's the 100th anniversary of the pep band this year. Bring in a new pep band director and give that person more say in selecting the music played during the games. 10. Hire a director of player development. For those that want Crouch to be promoted, here's a great title for him. Then that opens up the special assistant role for a young alum to be hired. 11. NIL. So many schools are doing so many creative things in the NIL space. The school and their NIL partners need to look at the landscape this spring and summer and facilitate more opportunities for the student athletes. Kentucky found a way for foreign players to do NIL. Tennessee has an NIL collective for fans and companies to contribute to. Duke is releasing NFT's. Georgetown did an unannounced bowling party. 12. Media relations. There have been some improvement here (first semester freshmen media availability this year, all of the media around the BET last year, some pre game media availabilities, player availability after a loss), but this is all bare minimum for most programs. Ewing no longer does a regular radio segment, the campus papers barely cover the team, and the national media barely remembers there's a team. Yesterday's statement supposedly wasn't even sent to Casual Hoya, Thompson's Towel, and Hilltop Hoops which still diligently cover the team.

Jon Scheyer: 2013-2014 Special Assistant 2014-2018 Assistant Coach 2018-2022 Associate Head Coach Nolan Smith: 2016-2018 Special Assistant 2018-2021 Director of Basketball Operations 2021-2022 Assistant Coach Neither of your examples started as assistant coaches. As alleninxis mentioned, young former players start as special assistant (like these two or Jon Wallace) or assistant director of basketball operations (like PE Jr before he got promoted when Othella Harrington left) or maybe director of basketball operations if they have some experience already. Those positions are currently filled by individuals who are not Georgetown alumni. Scheyer graduated in 2010 and Smith in 2011...so they were 2yrs and 5yrs removed from wearing the jersey. Our guys are now 10+yrs removed. A little different but I get your point. Not all that different. Just because a player plays in the pros for 2 years or 10 years, it doesn't mean they have more coaching experience. For someone like Austin Freeman or Reggie Cameron that has some coaching background, they could potentially be a fit at DOBO which would be a step up, but still not a full assistant coach. Chris Wright would probably benefit from at least a year as a special assistant just to understand the role of an assistant coach before jumping into the job. Of all the alumni that I can think of, maybe Kevin Braswell, Mike Sweetney, or Tyler Adams could theoretically take one of the assistant coach spots, but that's only if you have a strong support system around them like an established head coach and two super strong other assistant coaches on the staff. And I don't think the program is in that kind of position at the moment. If Ewing is the head coach next year, then he needs three amazing assistants with a lot of college coaching experience to help him try to turn things around. Now isn't the time to be taking a chance on an assistant coach with little to no experience to develop them. The time for that would have been 2017. However, like I said, positions like assistant DOBO, special assistant, operations manager, and even DOBO are where you could hire people like young alumni to gain experience, and that would be a great starting point for next season.

But Duke does this every year....Nolan Smith and Scheyer come to mind as a young men that were groomed to follow K....why couldn't Ewing do this? Jon Scheyer: 2013-2014 Special Assistant 2014-2018 Assistant Coach 2018-2022 Associate Head Coach Nolan Smith: 2016-2018 Special Assistant 2018-2021 Director of Basketball Operations 2021-2022 Assistant Coach Neither of your examples started as assistant coaches. Who are some good up and coming assistants with strong DC ties? I know Skinn (OSU), Nolan Smith, and Jones (VT). And the Brooks guy at xavier that's director of recruiting. Anyone else of note? Not sure, but if we make a coaching change, I'm hoping for the best coach possible and if that is someone with zero DMV ties, that's fine. But then look to fill that important hole with an assistant with strong ties. I don't think we should limit ourselves to head coaches with strong DMV ties. hm I don't know all that much about him, but Bill Courtney (51) doesn't count as young but he's the assistant at Miami that has been recruiting the DMV pretty hard the past few years. Not sure that he leaves Larranaga after coaching with him at Bowling Green, George Mason, and Miami, but could be someone to look at as an assistant to a younger head coach that doesn't have DMV ties. He has head coaching experience in the Ivy League (Cornell) and assistant coaching experience in the Big East (Providence and DePaul) as well as in the DC/VA area (American, George Mason, UVA, VTech).

1) Force the band to change the tunes. It's tired, The band adds new songs and cuts old songs every single year. As a reminder, the Georgetown pep band is completely voluntary. They are not on band scholarships, they don’t get paid besides free pizza, they don’t get course credit, and I’m pretty sure they don’t even have a staff conductor any more. They attend every home football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball game (and other student events/sports events) because they support the Hoyas and like music. Adding a song means either buying the sheet music or a student (or staff conductor when there was one) scoring it themselves. So that requires money and or time, which are both limited for a voluntary student club. Let's break down the pep band's music in terms of a basketball game. - Most of the music the pep band plays is in the 30 minutes leading up to tip off. If you're arriving at tip off, you would have missed most of that music. - The official timeouts are scheduled and produced by the athletics department, so most of the songs during the timeouts are chosen by them and the pep band can't remove the songs from their books. That's why in 2003 the band had to play Sheryl Crow's Soak Up The Sun every men's basketball game for an entire season, because the cheerleaders had a dance routine for it during like the first half U12 timeout. And that’s also why the band plays Hey Baby at like the second half U8 timeout of every single game. - For 30 second timeouts, there isn't enough time to play a full song, so usually the band plays "cheers". These are short repetitive melodies that fill space. As an example, the cheer that everyone was familiar with was the "Hey You Suck" cheer that the athletics department eventually banned. Again, the cheerleaders have cheers/chants/dance routines that go along with these, so it would require producing new cheers and getting agreement buy in from the cheerleaders to change those. - I believe the band gets to play a couple songs at the end of halftime, but I'm usually out on the concourse having a beer with friends that are sitting in other sections during halftime so I'm not sure. - They play the fight song and alma mater at the end of the game. So if you're basing your assessment of the pep band's music on just the timeouts, then it's really focused on about 20% of their music book and a lot of that percentage is dictated by the athletics department/cheerleaders.
