the guards and dejaun have to stay home on defense. no doubling the post and no getting out of position leaving nichols, rautins, or the pothead with open looks. and please....NO ZONE!! we get killed on the boards when we play zone, even worse than usual.
WE MUST MUST MUST WIN THIS GAME!!!

Two things:
1) Box out. Cinci and Pitt averaged 20.5 offensive boards against us. In contrast, Seton Hall had . We need to get back to controlling the boards/
2) Hit our free throws. If last year's BET game has been properly repressed, we might not remember how badly missed free throws down the stretch can kill a team. Thankfully, two of the teams ahead of us in the polls demonstrated it for us--Wisconsin missed the front end of a one and one with under a minute left and lost by one and UNC missed the first of 2 free throws with 3 seconds left down two. If those teams hit their free throws, they would have won. We need to keep that in mind and knock 'em down.
(Of course, as I pointed out to someone at teh game, the difference between this year's Alabama Rainmaker and last year's is that he hit the second free throw this time)

this is a game where dajuan can blow up. if the zone starts collapsing on jeff and roy, dajuan is going to have good looks all night. plus with his height, he'll be able to shoot over defenders trying to close out on him. i wouldn't be surprised if he gets 17 or more.

btw, terrence roberts is playing with a partially torn meniscus. he only played 12 minutes saturday and i don't imagine he'll he much of a factor tonight, although it is his last home game. i imagine lots of time for paul harris tonight. if we get watkins in foulf trouble early, which is a good bet, that means gorman has to play significant minutes and the rat doesn't want that to happen. bo-heem can't afford foul trouble for any starters because he really doesn't want to play josh wright or gorman.

Based on Syr injuries and lack of depth I'm pretty convinced we'll see and entire game of serious sluff off 2/3 zone. I know I'm not breaking any ground here, but I think it will really be a packed in zone and just dare us to beat them from 3. Usually they extend the zone with the guards leaving the foul line open, but I think this will be different.
We win if we force our will and still pound it inside and hit 40% from 3. If we just pass it around and jack up 3's as the shot clock winds down and shoot sub-40% with too many shots from 3 we'll be in trouble.
This game will be emotional for them and a tough turnaround for both teams since they both played on Saturday in tough and very physical games.
I like that Vegas likes us, but the line moving down scares me a little...I think we pull this out, but think more of a Villanova road game than a L-Ville type road game.
Tight till the end.

I am encouraged.
I thought there would be more "jook"-ish posts about this particular Syracuse game. (sorry, jook, don't mean to pick on you).
But everyone seems to be looking at this one the right way. Let's forget for a minute that Georgetown can lock up the regular season title tonight (something the players have indicted they really want to do, by the way).
This is Georgetown-Syracuse. No 'splanations necessary. It has been the biggest game (or games) of the year for these two teams since the beginning of the Big East. It remains the biggest game of the year.
But another carrot looms. We can help punt the Orange right out of the NCAAs they thought they locked up on Saturday. Yes, 'Nova probably needs to beat them too, but do you really want to look at Magoo's face on Selection Sunday, when Billy Packer asks him why they should be in and he responds by saying, "We beat Georgetown?"
Does anyone want that? The fact that this game is more important to them is EXACTLY why it should be important for Georgetown.
Revenge? Yes. Rivalry? Yes. Eternal hatred? Yes. Post-season implications? Yes. Title on the line? Yes.
...Boz leaving work early today? Damned skippy.

We can only get big men like Watkins in foul trouble if we get Roy the ball and have him shoot. But typically that doesn't happen, Roy ends up wasting a lot of time on the court not scoring and he ends up getting in foul trouble before the opposing big man can get into foul trouble. Still don't understand it but, hey, whatever.
I am sick of people in the media saying Gtown doesn't need this game. Barker essentially has given this game to Syracuse. Wilbon was on the TK show and said he doesn't think the Hoyas win tonight.
I hope the players really go after it this game and I hope they play well. I have faith in III in realizing how important the Syracuse games are (frankly he should have won all three times that his Hoyas have played the Cuse and that's in part because III understands how key beating Syracuse is). Two seasons ago Bowman's toe kept us from winning a shocker at the Carrier Dome. Last season the Hoyas gave away that agme at MSG , runing an opportunity to sweep Syracuse that season (which would have kept the Cuse out of the NCAA tourney to boot). The Hoyas can amke up for it this time by ruining the Cuse's senior day and eliminating from much hope of making the NCAA Tournament. If they come out like a bunch of dogs and keep turning over the ball every other possession I will be ticked off (not that that matters to anyone). Beat those bastards!

Thanks, Boz. I still stand by my original post. I didnt say anything really that crazy. I said rivalry purposes were big enough, but in all other aspects, this game means a lot more to Syracuse as they probably need one more big win to make the tourney, and we barely even need the win to clinch the Big East. Again, of course, I recognize the rivalry angle.

My SUcks scouting report (having watched most of their games)
D Nichols - don't be surprised to see him go off for 15 pts in the 1st half. He normally gets off to a good start then disappears in the 2nd half. Easily their best shooter and when hot can take over a game. His Houdini acts though are often
Devendorf - prone to turnovers. The "cheerleader" of the team and makes me want to puke everytime he talks trash to the opponents. Has a decent outside shot and very good going to his left in the lane. JWall should be able to contain him
JWright - One of the worst PG in the BE. He's not seeing alot of minutes these days. He'll just spell the guards
Rautins - solid 3pt shooter. Lately a fan favorite. He's been hot in recent games, but this has been against subpar defense on the perimeter. He'll never drive the lane so as long as we get a hand in face , shouldn't be an issue
TRoberts - better known as "big baby" He's an injury waiting to happen everytime he steps on the court. Hampered by a knee injury. In their last game he went for a dunk and couldn't get up high enough , stuffed by the rim. A decent rebounder but prone to be in early foul trouble. If we can get into his head, he will be contained.
Watkins "Mookie" - athletic center.. underachieving in my eyes. Has decent moves around the basket when he feels like it. Solid rebounder and shot blocker. Roy may have some troubles with him. If we can get him in foul trouble, Roy can have a huge game as they have nothing off the bench to contain him
PHarris - (frosh) Couldn't hit a school bus if he walked up to it. A beast on boards and solid defender. Not sure who they'll have him defend but if its on Summers, it would be an interesting matchup. He'll also push it up the court on occasion
Others - we may see Gorman come off the bench to spell Trob/Watkins. No chance of him doing anything down low but could be a dagger from outside.
All this being said, we match up well, but its the Big East..anything can happen. I hope the boys are as pumped up as I am

I was pretty calm while Cinci and St. John's were shooting the lights out at their places and taking big leads while we turned the ball over, but that's just not going to happen tonight. Tonight's game is one where I move all breakable and throwable items, as well as any sharp objects out of my living room. I think the best way to describe this is "'007 after Germany beat Poland" mad. The nice thing is I know the team will be just as up for this game as we are. If they aren't, I'm sure JT3 just needs to show them a certain tape from last year to insure they want it enough.

For everyone who says our side is the only one that considers this a huge rivalry game, check out this blog entry from a Syracuse Post Standard reporter: blog.syracuse.com/axeman/2007/02/big_monday_try_bigger_monday.htmlThe nut graph: "SU vs UConn may be the gold standard rivalry now. But SU-G'town still has it's own place in the hearts of SU Basketball fans. Not to sound like the old man on the porch here, but "back in the good old days" when SU-Georgetown was the last home game of the year it always felt bigger than life. All you have to do is scan the scores to open the flood gates of memories." Of course, then he goes on to list a bunch of end-of-season games that SUcks beat us, but that only makes me want to kick their EDITED even more!

I'd like to see Roy stay out of foul trouble tonight. Just seems lately refs have been giving Hibbert some ticky tack calls especially early. Extremely encouraging that we've been able to adjust and win with him on the bench, as this will definitly happen in the big dance.

I don't care if it's Cuse "Senior Night." (which should really be 4th-year player night, since I doubt many degrees will be handed out. Does Syracuse even issue degrees? Has someone checked their accreditation?) I'll modify a Lewis Grizzard line for this one: The rumors about Syracuse are untrue. They do not throw a diploma into your car if you drive through town with the windows down. You have to stop first.

I just want to respond to this post as well....Roy has definitely been on the receiving end of some ticky-tack fouls, but in that same vein, he needs to work on boxing out...from what i recall, those early fouls in the past couple of games have been push-offs on offensive rebounds...and based on watching the games, roy has definitely pushed off. that will be called every time on a 7'2 big man. he can avoid that by getting position for rebounds.

I'd just like to see us not get behind early again. Its happened in the last three games. In fact, we've been down at least 8 in each of the last three games, only to storm back and win. It would be nice not to dig the big hole and just go all WVU all over the Orange.
As for Hibbert, he just isn't going to be a great rebounder. His efforts to aggressively block every shot that's thrown up too often leave him out of position.

we have to match their intensity early and take the crowd out of it. su(cks) fans are as fickle as it gets and if we jump on them early the boo-birds will come out quick. the guards are the key tonight IMO. they have to remain poised, penetrate the zone, make some open 3's, and stick to their shooters.
