I guess I didn't realize that Egerson's nickname was "God's Gift" ... If you're going to call yourself God's Gift, shouldn't you be, you know ... pretty good? He played hard and rebounded well. Important stuff, but it's not like we're losing someone critical to the success of the team. Seriously, I closed my eyes every time he took a shot from outside of 10 feet. He was never afraid to shoot the ball, though. For good or for bad. I don't know if the God's Gift name was tongue in cheek, but I'd rather cheer on players like Jeff, Roy, JWall, and Macklin who seem more humble and more aware of their own talent level. Egerson certainly wasn't God's Gift to 3-point shooting and if I'm reading the Post story correctly, he wasn't God's Gift to homework either. I think that "Luv" and "God's Gift" were given to him by his parents. Anyone have confirmation?

I just read that thread on the Maryland board. Reading posts over there is like taking bong hits: good for a few laughs (in this case, at the combination of racism, idiocy and slander), but you just end up dumber for it.

I forgot how humble Macklin was when he proclaimed himself "The Big Ticket". He didn't. That came from people comparing him to Garnett. I guess I didn't realize that Egerson's nickname was "God's Gift" ... If you're going to call yourself God's Gift, shouldn't you be, you know ... pretty good? He played hard and rebounded well. I think that "Luv" and "God's Gift" were given to him by his parents. Anyone have confirmation? "Luv" definately was--I remember them calling him by that name when he was checking in for the summer session prior to his freshman year, and I seem to recall "God's Gift" was as well. It definately seems a nickname from a parent.

Macklin is big. It's certainly more humble than God's Gift. Also, Egerson tried to play outside of his ability ... noble, but ineffective. Macklin, to date, understands his role better.

Who gives themselves their nickname?
Macklin most likely didn't call himself the Big Ticket, and Marc definitely didn't call himself "God's Gift." It's what his Mom calls him -- God's Gift to her. I believe he has a tattoo of it, but instead of being some egotistical thing, it seems like it is more of a "Mom" tattoo.

People seem focused on the recruiting of Egerson, but the real problem is that he was allowed to play so much while likely on the brink of an academic crisis. You don't go from a decent student to failing out overnight no matter what his grades might have been from the first semester. He should have been on "leave" or "probation" or at least riding the bench rather than stealing minutes from guys that we now need and probably don't have enough playing experience because Egerson was playing more minutes than everyone except 4 of our starters. Where's Mary Fenlon when you need her?

Similar to a lot of other people I think, after kind of thinking about this since last night, I'm thinking that while it is obviously going to leave a hole on the court, this is bad for the program and reflects poorly on Georgetown as a whole. My mom (a Gtown alum, but not usually that up to speed on all the basketball news) sent me this in an email this morning, so I thought I'd post it for her: "Weighing in from the land of academic snobs. . . I think this Egerson thing is an embarrassment for JTIII and for Georgetown. We never should have recruited a student who attended a basketball mill such as Lutheran Christian Academy. Google that place and check out the investigative reports in the Washington Post and the New York Times and you'll see what I mean. Ooo. . . should I go on the talk board and say that?"

Good question, but I also wonder if this was why Marc's turn in the starting lineup (for the Vandy game) was so short-lived.

The counterpoint is Darrel Owens. He was ineligible his freshman year; now he has a Master's. And no, DJ didn't go to a diploma mill, but Marc isn't Philly Lutheran. I'm sure there were plenty of good kids who went there as well as some looking to game the system. You judge each person on their own, not from a newspaper article.

Posters are reminded about the following board rules:hoyatalk2.proboards48.com/index.cgi?board=news&action=display&thread=1075433250&page=1#107543325011. This is not a rumor board. While speculation is a fact of life on message boards, there is a fine line not to cross. Issues of academic standing, intra-team issues, or personal information unsuitable in a public forum concerning recruits, student-athletes, coaches, or staff are unwelcome and may be pulled without warning. If you are citing speculation posted on another message board, note it accordingly. (If you are unsure and have a question, ask offline first.)
12. Avoid rumor and outright speculation about any prospect or player's scholarship and/or walk-on status. Refrain from speculation about the academic status of current players or posts will be deleted.

No, we don't have a chance at Delle Donne (Delaware is really strange in that their four best players - Val Whiting (who played at Stanford), Monick Foote (who played at UVA), Rushdan and Delle Donne - compare favorably with much bigger states.
Anyway, it seems that, when we get down to mocking players for their choice of nicknames, it's time to kill the thread.

It's what his Mom calls him -- God's Gift to her. I believe he has a tattoo of it Indeed he does, on his neck.

Dan - Since I don't see anything about administrators in the rule, I assume that the rumors about you and Paris Hilton are fair game??

Dan - Since I don't see anything about administrators in the rule, I assume that the rumors about you and Paris Hilton are fair game?? First - I am a moderator which is not much removed from a regular poster. There is only one all powerful Admin. Second - I always wear underwear, which fortunately puts me way out of Paris' league.

Dan: Why's that, Frazier? FF: Are you kidding me? She gets around, all right? Dan: She does, does she? FF: Oh yeah. Like a record.
