great win on the road against a tough team.
the good - roy, jeff, and jon taking control. - roy being more assertive down low - the newcomers providing valuable minutes. they are going to mess up sometimes but they give us the athleticism we did not have last year. - egerson's defense and overall poise, other than the ill advised 3 at the end of the half - only 12 3's attempted. getting better shots was a huge priority for me. - winning with a starter out
the bad - sapp and his shooting, or lack thereof. either jesse or tyler must develop into a shooter. - the turnovers, especially by jeff. - too many fouls. i'll blame that troll jimmy burr for this one.
overall, a great job by the team and staff. playing down a starter, we came together and got a good win. winning any road game is a plus.

Read Ms. Powell's piece in the Post. I guess you have to pick your spots, but she made no mention of the lockdown D on Foster. Would have loved to have seen the game to have witnessed that achievement.
In terms of how teams play us, I would guess it might be a while before someone plays us man up.

Last night proved we have plenty of fouls to go around. I think Ewing got one every other minute he played. I am still terrified when Rivers is handling the rock as he just doesn't seem that solid but as I was thinking that he gets a great steal & dunk.
Vandy has only lost 4 non-conference games there in like the past eight years (Duke has won 40+ straight). The sky is suddenly not falling on this board which was ridiculous after the Hartford game. ODU should be a good test as well as Oregon and then we are heading down south. If Jeff, Roy & Jon don't get in foul trouble, we are going to crush Duke.

They mentioned on TV that pre-big east Thompson was going to try to get everybody minutes (for the most part) to find out who gels and then settle into an 8 to 9 man rotation. It sounded like the announcers had heard him say this.
I would say that sounds about right. Clearly a couple of guys are out of that group already, but last night showed a lot of different types of line-ups which helps in determining what will work and what won't.

I think there are few to no teams that wouldn't look vulnerable with their two best players on the bench. And considering that most of the guys that are backups are freshman or in the rotation for the first time, I think it will be significantly less of an issue as the year goes on. ANNNNNNDDDDDD ONNNNNEEEEE ;D Very true Tbird but.......we play a team with some real depth like UFL and we can ill afford to have Hibbs and green on the bench or we would get hammered. Say Florida loses Noah and Horford to foul trouble, they still have Taurean and Brewer out there. Granted this is the #1 team in the nation I'm referencing but they should be our measuring stick considering they kept us outta the elite 8 last year. Right?? Go Hoyas!!!! Well, we lose Hibbs and Jeff to foul trouble, we still have Wallace, which means we only need one other guy to step up. Games like today are a great time for them to be able to do so (as many others have said) Another thing that I don't think has been mentioned is the 3-5 times that the Hoyas responded to full court pressure by letting the best ball handling big man in the country bring the ball up the court, which, of course, he had no problems doing. Another reason not to worry too much about the Hoyas when they face full court pressure.

Watching the game last evening was so refreshing. John Thompson III is a godsend. As someone who remembers the earlier regime all too well, I still find myself in awe sometimes when I realize that I am watching a well-coached Hoya team.
My only regret is that I missed the last four minutes of the game last night--I was thrown out of the bar I was watching it at for smoking.

Great effort by the Hoyas- winning a game this early in the season on the road is a BIG feather in their cap.
Can't say much that hasn't already been said here, but I will say this: the four newcomers looked 100% better than against Hartford. They still made mistakes and threw the ball away at times, but they shot much better, played much better, defended and rebounded generally well, and overall were a big presence out there. PE2 will be a key piece of this team in the second half of the year, and Macklin's presence was noticable. Rivers is a bit further along than I thought as well.
Just a bang-up win, and with TC out with flu to boot. If the newcomers focus on improving and contributing (sans mistakes) each game, we could be dangerous by the end.

Excellent win and a great way to kick off the campaign for real. Jeff Green is a damn good player for sure. He seemed to have a little bit of everything, which is not all that common in today's stars. On a related note, thanks to Oral Roberts you will be moving up at least one notch at least.

Ed Stimes is a HoyaTalk LEGEND and that last comment is "so Ed Stimes"--why do I picture him wearing a shirt with Esh's picture and it looks like Ghostbusters sign? Seriously--I think many of my worries are flashbacks to being used to the disaster that was bench coaching of late Pops years and Esherick tenure. I have been a member too long and need to learn to enjoy things more. I apologize for being so pessimistic. Need to just and enjoy the III Era!!

Not sure why everyone is so exicted about the game last night. We're one of the best teams in the country. We're expected to win that game on the road...I call that a solid game.
I'm more convinced than ever that we're one of the very top teams in the country and have the ability to win the whole thing. First time since Iverson's last year. Enjoy the ride, but we need to ratchet up our obnoxiousness level a little. Time to bring back the Hoya paranoia and Edited off everyone with our cocky attitudes ;D
As some football player once said to a kid celebrating a TD..."Son, act like you've been there before"

I'm with you FOTP i think it's cause many people were predicting we were going to lose this game some by as many as we evenually one by. It's a very solid win. Nothing about the win itself is that amazing. The way we did it with jeff on the bench a lot of the game was impressive and i liek the fact the new guys got so much run.

Hi!
I can tell you why we are so excited. You are correct-we are expected to win a game like this.
What excited me was the play of the newcomers. These guys are really really good. By the end of the year, this is going to an extremely talented and DEEP team. I can't wait to see the next TV game to see further improvement.
Did I say I was excited?? If I haven't, let me tell you now that I am excited about this team. And I can assure you that I am not alone. I am one excited Hoya fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm excited too, but it just bugged me how down some people were going into last night's game and then act like this is some incredible win. I think we can win the whole thing....not sure how I can be more excited. Hence, I'm not going to get too high or low from game to game. Although winning at Cameron would put a little extra pep in my step Go Hoyas and enjoy the ride.

I think the win made me feel not necessarily excited, but more comfortable about the team's chemistry and talent. There's plenty of time to smooth out the pieces, but the upside is great.

Last night's win was impressive to me- early in the year, III's teams are most vulnerable and not playing together as much. I was much more impressed with the newcomers- they answered the bell this time.

Didn't get to see the game last night, and although Rich on the radio is entertaining, it doesn't allow me to analyze much. I will settle for breaking down the box score, and I see a lot of good things there. 1. We won the battle on the boards, 35-31, and pulled down 12 offensive rebounds (6 by Jeff & Roy). 2. We had a positive assist to turnover ratio, 15:13. If I remember correctly, at this time last year we were typically in the red when it came to assists/turnovers. However, 13 turnovers is too high and a lot of them were avoidable last night. 3. We shot .525 from the floor, .333 from beyond the arc, .667 from the stripe. Those numbers are pretty close to our averages from last season, and it's only the second game. We're on a good track as far as shooting the ball is concerned. 4. 6 steals and 5 blocks indicates that this team is talented and opportunistic on defense. Should be a fun year for us when opponents have the ball.

OK, I am really getting tired of having to experience these games from box scores and the postings here....I want to get to watch this team!!!! Sounds like a great game and some great experience for the young players. I was very impressed to read about Egerson's job on Foster. What a plus to have someone who can be that lockdown defender......keep our fingers crossed. How we beat a good zone is probably going to be the biggest question mark about this team. The 3-point shooting didn't seem to be all that great again, although there were not too many attempts and they clearly weren't needed. However, there will be games where we need to hit from outside and we will need more than JW to do it. If that works itself out......then WOW!!!!
Great effort (at least from what I can tell) by all the guys. Keep getting those freshman playing time!!!! BEAT ODU!!!!!!!!!!

It was an impressive victory and regardless of the fact that Vandy did lose 6 games at home last year, it really is a tough place to play ... not for the same reasons as Cameron or Rupp, but because the whole place is so wacky. It is just tough to get comfortable there. And that comes from many players over many years all pointing out the same kind of things. It is just unlike any other court in the Country. Still don't put too much into it. Vandy is a bit down this year. Depending on who you believe, they are picked between fourth and last in the SEC East. For what it's worth, our writers picked them last ... of course our writers are mostly schmucks.

I don't think we're excited because we beat Vandy, besides the fact it was a solid win on the road against a team we lost to last year. We're excited because I don't even think this team has reached anywhere near its potential for THIS season, and we dispatched of a quality team on the road by 16 points in a game where we were unnecessarily in foul trouble all night (thanks, Jim Burr) and our freshman were still learning the ropes. We were able to coast to an easy road win without playing our best, which is the mark of a team that is taking that next step.
