Wow. We are GOOD. I think we played far from a perfect game tonight. Particularly in the first half, the less experienced players (less experienced with our system, I don't just mean the freshmen) looked very rattled when they were forced to go it alone without Green and Hibbs. PE Jr. was lost at first, Summers was trying to hard and jumping on every head fake in sight, and Rivers I think turned it over right when he got into the ballgame.
But by the second half, things really seemed to settle down and everybody contributed. Ewing, Summers, and Macklin were working their tails off every second they were in there. Rivers did some nice things, especially picking their guard's pocket and taking it for an easy two.
Green and Hibbert were of course amazing. But the difference between a good and a great season depends on everybody else, and from what I saw, you have to be excited to think what can happen by February and March as these other players get more comfortable. I thought Sapp and Egerson were excellent. They both played poised well beyond their years. Summers is going to be a star. Its also hard to take your eyes of Macklin when he's out there.
And I haven't even mentioned Jon Wallace, who was the glue that held everything together. What a performance.
Defensively, when we weren't fouling or they weren't burying threes with our hands in their face, I thought we were fantastic. There will be games we win solely because of our defense, and that is the mark of a true contender. The way we took care of their no. 1 boy was impressive.
This to me was a much more impressive win than when we went to Oregon last year. We just looked so much more comfortable with what we're doing, and the amount of athleticism that we bring to the table is staggering.
This is going to be a fun ride.

Can't say it enough: Wallace was just about perfect tonight. I am REALLY excited about his mid-range jumper! Great point. If he can knock those down with consistency, I think he will definitely be the legitimate third scorer we need to be a real threat to go deep in the NCAAs this year. In addition to the mid-range jumper, cool as can be on the floor directing play and making the right decision. He's also starting to look like the guy we're going to turn to along with Jeff to make something happen if the play we're trying to run breaks down, and it will be huge if he can hit tough shots in traffic with the shot clock winding down like he did tonight.

At the college level, there are three things needed for a final four team.
1) a dominating big man 2) a good point gaurd 3) a do-it-all type who can create
we have all of those in our three juniors. Plus, we have depth and athleticism that we just didn't have last season.
I can see why luv is starting at the three. He's significantly better than last season. He's trimmed down. He's got a better body. He's stronger and he's quicker. He defended foster to the point where I forgot he was in the game. We've got a very good team.

Jeff is 15-17 at the line. Talk about a huge development if it holds.

Jeff looked great tonight....to me, he may be the best combo forward in the country.....even if the powers that be on t.v are salivating over josh mcroberts

Jeff is 15-17 at the line. Talk about a huge development if it holds. It won't (remember Roy's hot start last year?), but if he can shoot 70%+, that would be fantastic.

I think we win by about 25 tonight if Jeff doesn't get into foul trouble. The only time we were ever threatened in the game was when he had to sit in the 1st half. And while our freshman did look a little green out there tonight, this game will do nothing but help them gain experience which will be valuable both for our big OOC games and the BE schedule. For their first road game as Hoyas, I think Macklin, Summers and Rivers performed admirably, although not top notch. The fact we just handled a decent Vanderbilt team while not even putting forth our best effort is a very good sign.

Good game. ODU, ORU, Orgeon, and Duke are all in our next 5 games though so we need to continue to focus on getting better every day. Baby steps people.

can't wait for the dookies to play us man to man so that jeff and roy can score all over mcbob.
Big Ticket Most importantly, we've got our first head-above-the-rim dunker since Demetrius Hunter! woohoo!! i really enjoyed macklin's missed followup dunk where he was way up there. mcbob or mabye zoubek will make for a nice goofy dude for vernon to throw down on national tv in a few weeks. III's early comments on Macklin and the Bilas/Katz/Davis articles gave me the impression Macklin was not going to be a big contributor this year. they implication was that vernon was raw, but he looked pretty skilled out there tonight. his handle and passing impressed me and he had a nice touch on a little hook in the lane. i was really expecting he would only be providing defense and rebounding for about 10-15 mins this year, but it looks like he has the tools to contribute more.

Macklin, Ewing Jr., and Egerson all impressed me - if Tyler and Rivers can grow a little more before Big East season starts we'll be a pretty deep team.

I went to high school with Zoubek, and he's one of my good friend's from HS's little brother (she's 6'4" and plays at yale...) - so I'd especially love to see us shut him down at Cameron in December.... it'd be great if Macklin can step up to do so at the game.

Upside: 1. Defense was good on the whole especially Eggerson. Great job shutting down their #1. So much better than what we looked like agaisnt hartford. Much better job on fighting through screens and switching.
2. Coach throwing the freshmen right into the fire. THey did a really good job for the most part. Still a little rough around the edges but will settle down as the season goes on.
3. The depth of this team is amazing. I can see coach keeping this up and consistently going 9 deep.
Down Side: 1. Eweing and macklin bought too many pump fakes leading to silly fouls. They were calling a lot of ticky tackey stuff.
2. Jeff still had a lot of turn overs 5 on the game. THat's not good but besides that he was awesome.

some great quotes from that barker article: "Hubris thy name is Kevin Stallings.", "Yeah, our eyes kind of lit up [when they came out in a man defense], because we expected them to play zone, Our offense is tough to guard, because we have a lot of pieces. It was fun tonight, because we finally got a chance to run our offense.", and of course Who knows who the top-10 teams are this time of the year?" Thompson asked. "We just hope to be one of them at the end of the season."
although you have to give Camille credit for her article abotu eggerson after he shut down Foster.

Wow. I prefer to stay a little more humble than you 4life. Duke is a good team and Camron(sp) has got to be the best home court advantage in college basketball. It will be interesting to see the Hoyas in such an environment. Can't wait!

To me, the most impressive parts of the game (meaning perhaps what I was most surprised about) were the following:
Our guard play was TREMENDOUS. I don't recall one of our guards even turning the ball over in the second half (as someone else said, Jeff was AMAZING tonight but still had a few silly TOs)
We shut down Foster. We gave up a bunch of open threes early in the second half, but none of them went down. We got a bit sloppy w/interior D during a few points in the second half, but it was usually when we were young (Macklin et al).
We just dismantled a team in a big conference on the road. Do not take this lightly. This was an incredibly impressive win. I cannot say enough about JWall and Sapp tonight.

"Junior guard Tyler Crawford did not dress for the game because of illness. No specifics were given, but Crawford's absence was felt on the defensive end as the 6-foot-3, 205-pound swingman certainly would have drawn the duty of guarding 6-6 Vanderbilt standout Shan Foster."-Barker Davis
uh BD? i think eggerson did just fine on him.

I also noted during the game that it was great to watch Rivers become more and more comfortable as the game progressed. I thought the same about Ewing The Younger.
The fact that Jeff and Roy were on the bench for that stretch in the 1st half will pay dividends down the road!
