Summers was behind the bench,
Coach Rodney of Kenner fame was there too.

Kid in O'Connell Sweatshirt was Jason Clark--a class of '08 player and outstanding PG prospect.
As for doing what Marquette does--I like a lot of their ideas but Crean acted like a jackass and "fake emotion" is garbage. I don't ever want to see III going out and slapping fives and acting like a jackass before a game. Maybe that is who Crean is--but it came off as very rube-like and if that's what it takes to get fans fired up, I wouldn't want fans.

Thanks for the update RDF.
Agree on the part about Crean. JTIII is a very reserved, classy guy. I thought his e-mail earlier this year to the students was great. I also remember last year when he took out a full page in the Hoya to thank the students for coming to the games. I would much rather have a class act than a showboat self-aggrandizer. We have to hear enough of those on ESPN.

BTW, what the heck is with Crean, he is an odd looking person to say the least? Something's not right there but can't put my finger on it? Could be the hair or maybe those psycho eyes or something--but he looks like someone who survived the Apocalypse--somewhat normal but scary and might have horns or a tail or something??

If you need something to make you appreciate Fr. McFadden, go to a Dallas Mavericks game and get beaten absolutely to death by their PA Guy, Billy Hayes.

An awesome player who would be AWESOME for us, and who has been to a couple of our games this year, so fingers crossed. I hate when I don't know who was there and who wasn't in terms of recruits... I really need to start going down to that end of the stadium and taking attendance, haha.

Hmm...Ramell Ross sitting down at a Hoyas game, I think I've heard this one before...
RDF, I'm with you on the Crean thing. That video montage and high giving antics made me want to punch him in the spleen. I don't know how the Marq. players can respect such a weenie...
During time outs I think two things should happen: 1.) more GU-specific stuff (video montages, sponsored by the "laundry lists" that DJ S.J. goes through). 2.) More things directly involving the crowd. I don't care that much about cute kids running down the court. But if that cute kid running down the court can win everyone in section 428 a free Hoyas T-shirt, I'm riveted. I don't know how many other people really care just because of the cute factor. Maybe Mrs. Gretzky has some money on one of the tikes though...
That would get me involved. But these lame competitions like musical chairs bore the crap out of me. The only one that makes me slightly interested were the ones they used to do where the student had a half court shot to win a semester's tuition.

I figured that Father McFadden suggestion wouldn't go over well. I was just brainstorming. Certainly don't think you should have some loudmouth NBA-type thing going.
But please with the reading of the sponsorships. That is just awful. Or at least confine it to the early part of the first half and then put it to rest.
And I agree with RDF about Crean. I thought it was creepy. I don't think we need to ask anymore of JTIII. But who handles choices about what's done with timeouts?
And what about giveaways? No one has any views on this? Where are the Hoya Blue people? Who else handles this stuff?
I just feel like if 40 year old fans came in, were handed a grey t-shirt, say with "Ewing 33" on the back (that would be awesome), got to their seat to find a dark blue pom-pom waiting for them, saw the packed student sections on both sides doing some kind of pregame cheers (with the band maybe), and then come the second half were getting pumped up to U2, Rolling Stones, AC/DC, etc., you'd feel a palpable excitement within the building that discourages sitting on your hands.
Notice I'm not talking about noise for noise's sake. I don't want fake sound being pumped in, or the music turned on to loud, or anything like that. But I think it can all be used far more strategically than it is now.
As far as I'm concerned, usually you walk in to what feels like a library. Everyone sits quietly until the tip (which makes it so awkward when they turn the lights down and introduce the team), and the game starts and you can hear someone shouting three sections over.
Here's one more idea, which contradicts what I said about it at the time: what about a tradition of the students belting out the national anthem with whoever is there to sing it? When everybody did that for Duke, you couldn't help but feel the energy.

Side-note: Paparazi is NOT a perfect location for dinner after the game. It is nowhere near where the game is being played because the MCI Center is NOT "located in the heart of Georgetown." Though I must say I did enjoy when I got to read that announcement (and the Yellowbook announcement-"That's 1-800-YB-YELLOW") when I did PA for football games. And it even made some sense for games played on-campus.

HB isn't in charge of any of the stuff you want to change that's all the promotions department of the Athletic department. I'm also not sure i believe the crowd will be any better if they're given a t shirt or a pom pom. BUt hey if it works and the older fans can't get up for a game with out these things then I'm all for it.

Big Dog, I liked what Marquette did and their promotional department was great--the message with Crean was cool too--but that crap before game was over the top and something I NEVER want to see. This is the friggin BIG EAST and if these rubes act like this--they can go back to C-USA and play.
So commend Marquette and Crean for majority of stuff but the "crowd hyping" before the game was cheesy and beneath Big East Basketball.

diener, I think the problem is that such behavior just wreaks of "small time" basketball. If the students can't get pumped up on their own, that's a problem in this day and age. Climbing on a car and pumping fists seems more appropriate for an ECW house show or something of that ilk.

Climbing on a car and pumping fists seems more appropriate for an ECW house show or something of that ilk. maybe the schtick works for some schools and not others. after a marquette buzzer-beater toppled hated wisconsin in the early 70s, HOF coach al mcguire jumped up on the scorers table and raised a fist to the crowd. the milwaukee paper printed a front-page pic of mcguire on the table. in the foreground was UW's coach walking off the court. in the background was the father of two UW players giving Al the double bird. in a double OT game at freedom hall in the mid-90s, MU beat the cards on a last second brian wardle 3. mike deane sprinted to mid-court and proceeded to engage in this fist-pumping, foot stomping, twirling solo-celebration that enraged louisville fans. the deane example was ridiculous, but my point is that MU has a long and storied history of fiery head coaches. i would argue that crean's relentless efforts to inspire MU fans is one of the reasons his name, unfortunately for us, continues to surface when any major job opens. now would he tone down his schtick in bloomington or east lansing or anywhere else? probably, but i don't think that means MU isn't "big east worthy" or somehow second rate. we're 34th all-time in NCAA winning percentage and 20th all-time in NCAA tournament victories.

I'm not saying MU is not worthy of being in the BE. I'm just saying that this form of crowd-building, yokelish stuff is not at the BE level.
