Davon Jefferson's team is scheduled to play South Kent Prep (CT) tomorrow (Sunday) at 11:00 a.m. Eastern on CSTV. Check your local listings to be sure. Hopefully he'll be suiting up, as he's listed as one of the players to watch. The game will also be available on webcast at the following address (follow the link to webcast): www.hoophall.com/events/magic32/index.html

idk if ne1 watched this game but I did and haha I LOVE THIS KID. i would die to see him in a gtown jersey- could say hes more athletic than jeff. the kid landed a windmill and a one handed alley-oop. he made 2 3's also and played the 2 for half of the game. 6'9 sg with his athleticism and talent is unbelievable. he could easily start for us at the 2 next year with the little depth that we have at the 2. could easily see a jw-jefferson-pe2-green-hibbert starting 5 next year.

Not sure he has the handle to play the two, but he's got a very nice shot for a 6'9" guy, great athleticism, and he was moving on offense and defense more than anyone else on the court. They had him playing the top of the 1-3-1 zone then crashing the boards.
Would LOVE to have this kid come to GU.

ya maybe doesnt have the handles for a 2 but still could prolly play it for a lil at the NCAA level but i mean he did have some nice moves and nice finishes and for only being 215 he could really get inside--one thing he must do is put on some muscle but i dont think that would be a prob if he came here as it seems like every1 puts muscle weight on here.

On the broadcast they stated that he has narrowed his choices to GU, Kansas, U of SoCal(USC), and Oklahoma State.

On a side note.. macklin is skinny. They have him listed 6'9 and 190, and Jefferson at 6'7 and 190. Seems to me like Macklin, Summers and Jefferson will all be coming in playing the same position (SF and some PF) and we already have Jeff and Ewing Jr. I dont see how we can find PT for all these guys. Im not really familiar with their games though.. only situation I could see Jefferson coming is if JT3 told him that they would develop him as a 2. Seems like this will be his position in the NBA, so starting it now with a team full of 6'7 - 7'2 guys wouldnt be so bad.

Macklin is a PF/C and will play there. Rivals/Scout weight listings are notoriously unreliable, but even if they were, he'd still play there at 190 (though I bet he comes in closer to 210).
Macklin will challenge Roy at C. Summers, Pat and Jeff will play some PF and SF, with Spann possibly getting minutes at the SF. Jefferson would fit in this rotation as well, unless he can really play the 2.

I hope you mean "challenge" as in "They'll both make each other better in practice." If Roy loses his starting spot to a guy 5 inches shorter, 80 pounds lighter, and two years younger, there would be an investigation.

No, I mean challenge for a starting spot.
Roy will have the advantage of being bigger (mostly weight) and knowing the offense, plus two extra years of experience period, so he'll likely win.
The recruiting "gurus" may be wrong on Macklin, but they may be right. This guy is rated in the top ten for a reason. Roy may have five inches on Macklin in height, but Macklin may have close to thirty on Roy in the vertical jump.
Macklin isn't two years younger; I'm pretty sure he's only one at most. I'd be willing to bet he's a better rebounder immediately, and a better defender versus some players. Those quick guys are a better matchup for Vernon, I'd bet. He'll be better in the transition game, for all those who want to run.
Course, he probably won't be nearly as good a low post player or straight shooter. But yes, i think Macklin will push for major minutes. Thompson seems to favor vets, so Roy'll likely keep his job, but don't be surprised if minutes are equal.

Macklin's one of he quickest big people I've ever seen when it comes to running the floor. I think we'll see a style change or at least an alteration because you don't bring in a kid like this whose strength is his ability to run the floor and limit it by playing slow. Macklin's also very quick off his feet and will be a great rebounder--especially on offensive end.
I'd play Davon Jefferson at 2G from what I saw yesterday. That is IF he selects GU.
Summers is a SF with ability to give some minutes at PF spot as is PE JR.
Green can play anywhere on offensive end but likely a SF/PF mix.
Hibbert will keep getting better and fit in perfectly but you don't bring in McDonalds All American caliber players to sit on the bench and if III doesn't change his style/substition patterns, he'll quit landing talented players--which is why I'm convinced that style of play will be altered/adjusted to talent that is incoming.
BTW, in that Patterson game, I was very impressed with Bobby Maze and after watching him play and then Adrian Bowie in Montrose Christian game, Maze is head and shoulders above him in terms of ability and talent. Bowie is someone who should NOT be on Hoyas radar at all--he's not a PG, not a good enough shooter to play 2G, and wouldn't see court ahead of the guys we have currently on team or that will be on team in future. Maze is a kid to keep an eye on--much more unselfish then what I've heard in past and has tremendous athleticism and quickness. Nice looking jumpshot and penetrated at will.

Wow, I have to say I'd put the chance of Macklin starting over Roy at less than 1%.
Seriously, 13pts 6rebs 2blks 61%FG and 80%FT and another year to build on this production. Even if the recruiting gurus are right, Macklin would have to overcome the adjustment to the size and athelticism of the competition, learn the offense, and still might not beat out Roy.
And that's not even considering the scenario where Jeff moves to the 3 and Macklin starts at the 4 with PE Jr. coming off the bench. I think if he starts that's much more likely than him just replacing Roy.

Don't know about ten, but after seeing more of Jefferson we might come close if we land him. He would likely start at the 2 since frankly his outside shot looks as good as anyone's right now and his size would be such an asset.
I think Hibbert, Green, Macklin, Ewing, and Spann will be 5 guys at 3-4-5. Wallace, Sapp, Jefferson, and Egerson would probably split the minutes at 1-2.
And I know Thornton is close to your heart and I usually think the older players have an advantage (Spann for example I think will beat out a raw Summers for minutes at the 3) but I think Jefferson's size would put him in the rotation. If his outside shot is really as good as it seems, he'll be tough to beat out. Not only did he drop a couple of nice threes in this game, but you can see the evolution of his outside shot on the rivals reels.

Macklin will certainly get minutes, but there is absolutely no way he starts over Roy. Even if Roy only improved minimally over the offseason he'd start, and I expect he'll do better than that.
7'2 Junior centers who improved by leaps and bounds over the previous offseason don't lose their starting jobs to freshman - especially if they might finish as the team's leading scorer.

I think you're more likely to see Macklin start at 4 with Jeff at 3 and Roy at 5 then to see Mack push Roy to the bench. I'm pretty sure Macklin is a forward and wants to play 3/4 rather than 4/5 to enhance his NBA resume, but he'll likely get pushed to 5 at times out of neccessity. Come to think of it, I think his situation will be very similar to Jeff's--wanting to play 3 for the league but really being a college 4, and having to play 5 at times due to our roster.

Roy is a nice player, but he has some glaring weaknesses. Namely, the lack of quickness he displays. Can you improve quickness? Yes. Can you improve it to the point where Roy plays, on the defensive end, as well as a premier center does? No, not really.
There's a very good chance Roy continues to start. Better than not. But Macklin very well could be of the quality that he just beats out Roy. Returning leading scorer or no. More likely, though, is that they share nearly equal minutes. I guarantee there will be games next year where Macklin gets more play than Roy. If III is willing to let Amadou get minutes versus SJU, what do you think Macklin will get?
As for the Jeff at 3 talk, he'll need to vastly improve over the summer. Jeff passed up driving past Josh Boone at least three times yesterday -- and you want him to play on the perimeter versus Rudy Gay? Cover Foye?

I only find almost of all of that absurd so I'll try to state my small quibbles:
1. "Nice player" Roy is currently projected as the #5 center selected in the NBA Draft and a first-round pick after his JUNIOR year by nbadraft.net. I hope "nice" refers to him giving to charity. It seems like he's a bit better than "nice."
2. "Leading scorer or no." Yes indeed, most coaches scrap the leading scorer for an unproven raw talent. It's usually a smart move. Hey, how's that "Sapp will start over Cook" argument we heard preseason looking? And he was the third leading scorer.
3. "Glaring weakness." 7'2, 283 and not as quick as some centers = "glaring weakness." 6'9 and 15 pounds lighter than Jessie Sapp="No chance of getting pushed around." At least I assume that's part of the argument. Unless you think it's OK for a center to get pushed around. Roy will never be as quick as Macklin but can improve his mobility. But strangely I think Vernon will never be as big as Roy and he might have to get bigger.
The mythology surrounding recruits is a little much. Macklin's good and I agree there will be some games where he might play more than Roy (mostly because he'll play both center minutes and PF minutes). But let's not confuse that with him being immediately better than the big guy.
Jeff at the 3 is a stretch I admit. In fact I do think PE Jr. will end up starting at the 3. But I think Jeff has a better chance of starting at the 3 than Macklin does of displacing Roy in the starting lineup.

Doesn't Macklin play the 4 at Hargrave? They have that 7 footer who signed with UConn Mandeldove.

1. If Roy goes #5 in the draft after his junior year it is probably a massive mistake by that GM. Roy will play in the NBA, but he's not a top five pick. Yes, he improved over last year. But I think Roy's ceiling as more of a shorter Yao Ming. And that's if his shot, endurance and passing all improve.
Also, NBA draft.net is not an authority on anything. They are horrible. Horrible.
2. By the end of the year, I don't expect a huge amount of difference between our top three scorers. Would it be odd? Sure, but I can still see it happening.
I don't know who made the Sapp over Cook arguments, but I don't think comparing Sapp to consensus Top 10 player is anywhere equivalent.
3. First of all, no one knows Macklin's real weight. He's been listed on Rivals at 190 for THREE YEARS. They don't update that crap. So again, like quoting NBAdraft.net, your source is very questionable. But I agree, he could get pushed around. On the other hand, in college, there's a lot more small centers than big muscle guys.
Listen, I'm not saying Macklin will beat out Roy, but if he is as good as the hype, I think there is a pretty good chance he's a better defender and rebounder, and maybe a better player. There's a strong cult of Roy on this board that thinks he can do no wrong. I like Roy, but after watching him sit versus SJU for defensive reasons, watching Pittnsogle light up all our centers for 20+ and watching Hilton Armstrong do the much of the same, I can see where a strong defensive, rebounding player could take significant time.
