Here we go, a real test. If Green played like he did in the second half when they played Vandy we would be a 4-1 team but noooo. Alright, we better win out until WV and then beat them, and then have a tough game against UCONN. We will see how hte Big East schedule goes and then see if we can make the NCAA.

Needed to make some 3s in the 1st half - team lost confidence. JTIII straightened 'em out in the lockerroom ("Feed Jeff the ball"). Coulda been a ballgame if DJ make that 3 with 2:20 left, down 8. Illini made almost all there FTs down the stretch. Our defense looks legit, just need to avoid those 8 minutes scoreless droughts.

Tonight was bad, but maybe we're getting our stinker out a little sooner than last year when we were paralyzed against BC. And PLEASE, folks, enough with the emotional rollercoaster -- we're giddy at the start of the season, suicidal after the Vandy loss, giddy again after Oregon, and now suicidal again. Remember, it is only the beginning of DECEMBER. Now is EXACTLY when we want to have these games (if we have to have them, and even the best teams have bad nights, especially this early on).
Let's not panic here, people!

The end result was a respectable final score. I’m glad to see the team (I mean J. Green) step it up in the second half. Too bad the deficit was a bit too much to overcome, especially at a tough venue like Assembly Hall.
It seems as if the team can only count on one person playing in any given game or half for that matter. Against Oregon, it was Cook, tonight it was Green. I sure would like to see a full contingent one of these days.

Not panicked at all, actually. We came in right about the Vegas line (+9?).

JTIII straightened 'em out in the lockerroom One worrisome trend over the last 2 years: there have been several games where the "straightening out" doesn't happen until half time. By then (against a team like Illinois, UConn, And the like) the horse is often already out of the barn. This team needs to mature to the point where they can correct mid-half - they're clearly not there yet. And no panic here either - this team figured to have learning curve, especially with the non-conference road schedule they were facing.

Emotional rollercoster....I agree with FSO...but remember, we are a DC team. Look at what happens when the Redskins win and when they lose. It's a love - hate relationship.

2nd Half was much better--guys just played ball and got after it--showed more tempo and aggression. I like how Illinois pushes it up into halfcourt and plays with tempo--which Hoyas did in 2nd Half but not in the opening half.
It's obvious that this team needs better guards--Ashanti and Owens have been fine--but we need to see a big time lead guard come into the program who can create offense when things breakdown--you saw that as difference in tonight's game. Dee Brown created offense for his team when they were down in clock or struggling and we rely on our forwards and bigs--much harder to do.
Not a knock on Wallace either--I like Jonathan and respect him but if we're to take the next step as a program you need better guard play and quicker/more offensively gifted players.
Jeff Green in 2nd Half needs to be that way the ENTIRE GAME in terms of aggression/tempo he played at.
Brandon Bowman needs to come off bench and find his game--Owens has outplayed him and produces more for his teammates and runs this offense better--with nice tempo to his game.
Tyler Crawford had some good moments and two killers--leaving Jamar Smith with some lazy defense trying to strip Brown on the drive and then missing a jumper off inbounds play.
Ashanti Cook did a nice job defensively and played solid in spite of him not putting up a lot of points--but when you score 48, nobody was hitting too much.
One pattern that needs to change for Hoyas to take next step is to play an ENTIRE GAME--we seem to see them play 1 good offensive half and one crappy one--that can't be the case if you want to be an NCAA team and contender-you need to play full games--on both ends.
With all of that said--you learn more from this type of game then you do against a MEAC team and these past two games will serve the team well in future.
BTW--this is exactly type of game a kid like Ray Reed's quickness helps in--I'm not saying he's a great player, but he would've been able to run with Brown enough to challenge him a bit and that's why role players are needed on teams--we need a defensive stopper and more speed in backcourt--but we're at a stage where hopefully the program can recruit a player who can run like Reed and produce more offensively.

Sapp may develop into this. Remember, Ray looked lost on defense for 1.5 years, then the light turned on.

I'm not quite ready to start calling for Ray Reed, but, Wallace's complete inability to stay with brown is a little bit of a concern. While Brown is an extraordinary player (and- for the love of god- if musberger called him "the quarterback" one more time i was gonna go berzerk) but- there will be lots of really solid quick guards in the big east this year that wallace is going to have to find a way to guard.
Jeff came out big time tonight in the 2nd half. And- as much as I'd love to start railing on Brandon- I'm holding onto hope that he too will get his act together.
Roy is a "Good looking 7'2 Christmas Tree" Hearing that made the game worth it.

We played hard and we knew this would be a tough game. Glad Jeff Green was able to turn it on when his team needed him to be more agressive. Roy had some great defense with some early blocks where Illinois wasnt even trying to shoot against him in the second half.
This game showed two things to me. Sapp and Crawford need to step up if they want more burn off the bench. Sapp had a horendous looking three pointer not even hitting rim and wasn't much of an impact at all. Crawford was even worse. He had a nice lay-up but he looked completely lost on offense, more than ive seen any other player be lost in a system. Major clog around the 3 point line not spreading out the offense etc. Finally as RDF mentioned letting that Illinois dude take that 3 was a stab in the heart and a real momentum killer.

1) The comparisons to the 1st half of last year's BC game were right on target. Completely lost on offense, nobody wanted to even try to dribble penetrate, no one could hit an outside shot, etc. etc. etc. One of the ugliest first halves of basketball I've ever seen.
2) I was relatively pleased with the way our defense played. Roy really hurt the Illinois offense down low with his shot blocking and constant altering of shots. Illinois finished shooting 32% FG for the game, and we were surprisingly able to stay out of foul trouble. Having said that...
3) Our rebounding was atrocious. I don't think we could have gotten more than 5 rebounds tonight that weren't initially tipped by an Illinois player. Their bigs were just way more active than ours on the boards. We didn't get manhandled by a physically superior frontline, we got outhustled.
4) Jeff Green puzzles me like few other players have at any level of basketball. How can a guy look so lost out there in the first half, and then come back and dominate the second half like an All-American? I'm just so confused. Anyways, great to see him finally turn it around. A glaring negative tonight was those missed free throws that absolutely killed our momentum late, but all-in-all, he gave the best effort of anyone on our team tonight.
5) I've been probably one of the harsher critics of Brandon thus far, and his play tonight didn't do anything to change my mind. I don't know what his problem is, mental/physical/whatever, but he is just not ready to play against anybody right now. He hits any kind of shots tonight, and we are looking at a 3-5 point game in the final 3 minutes of the game and a shot to steal the game. I'm tired how everyone who doesn't pay attention to the Hoyas on a consistent basis continues to call him "our leader and a guy who can play." He is neither right now.
6) Roy had an off night on the offensive end, but he more than made up for it with his D. Generally pleased with how he played.
7) Completely agree about Wallace being a liability. Sure, he's a "calming presence" on the floor and doesn't make mistakes. But that's only when we aren't playing a team that has any kind of on-the-ball defenders or guards who can penetrate. Teams like 'Nova and UConn who have the guards to really hurt us are going to eat him alive come BE play.
8) For those who continue to harp that Crawford should be getting minutes; his defensive lapse with about maybe 7-8 min left in the game when we were mounting a comeback (down 8) was probably the biggest momentum killer of the night. He half-assed an attempt at a steal, and didn't run back to get back on his man (Brown? Smith?). He hits a wide-open 3 from the corner as the shot clock expires, lead goes back up to 11, and though that wasn't the dagger that ended us tonight, it was close.
9) I'm not disappointed with a 10 point loss at one of the toughest road venues in the country to play in. I'm disappointed in how we lost the game tonight. Illinois was good, and they played solid, but honestly they didn't do anything spectacular to say, man they are out of our league. We have no one to blame for this loss but ourselves; not coming out of the gates with a stronger effort just killed any chance we had to win this game. Illinois kept us in the game with poor shooting, but we never had that one shot to cut it to 4-5 points in the last 4 minutes of the game that might have gotten Illinois out of their comfort zone.

Props to "Orange Crush." $50,000 to charity? Damn. Loud, organized... impressive.
If only HB had 30,000 wild undergrads to draw from... I'm sure they'd be getting national TV love too!

I took comfort from the fact that if we had just done a few more things right we could've easily one this game. If we had just played a decent first half we would've won. If we just boxed out we would've won. If we can just bring all of our elements together on the same page we could be ridiculously good.

Too many streaky scorers on this team to game in and game out put together 40 minutes of great offense. They should be able to between Cook, BB, Green, Roy... but really haven't in the majority of games over a season and five games. This team hasn't looked good rebounding in 14 months. Can't box anyone out, don't go after the glass with any kind of passion... need serious help there. No reason to panic at all, but this team needs to work a lot of things out before they can seriously think about making a run at the Sweet Sixteen, let alone an exceptional showing in the Big East.

I read in one of those pregame articles posted around the chat board today that in order to be in the Orange Crush/Krush, you're required to solicit/collect a certain amount in donations from alumni/FOPs that then go to the charity causes. Interesting idea I gotta say.
