THAT is the absolute truth! Interesting that, for many players, they may well have a higher value in college than in professional athletics. That seems wrong on so many levels. That's because the value is assessed in different ways. As a professional basketball player, for example, NBA, G League, Europe, etc. you are generally assessed on your skill and ability as a basketball player. And you are largely paid commiserate with that value (there are some exceptions relating to NBA minimums, NBA draft pick guaranteed money, really bad contracts, guys in decline, etc.). Or at least that's the goal--obviously NBA teams make bad contracts, just as teams in every professional sport do. Dickinson's value is related to his skill as a player, of course, but the big difference here is that professional teams have owners who ultimately do have a bottom line. As a professional owner, you're not going to throw someone 50% more than their market value generally (someone dumb like the 1980s George Steinbrenner might, though) for a professional player because otherwise the owner won't get a good return on investment. But, here, there is no "return on investment" economically, because the donors are giving NIL money for very little in return (it's supposed to be for the NIL value, but these deals are way in excess of that). So, unlike professional sports, the "bottom line" is just what donors are willing to throw around. There is zero cost to the university other than those perhaps related to alumni relations, etc. And the bidding war aspect just juices the whole thing up. Of course, that happens with professionals, too. One other aspect is that this is all still brand new. The market hasn’t found its equilibrium yet. But with no salary cap and a lot more teams than any pro league, I think there will always be at least a few buyers offering more than a player would/should be “worth.”

Hoyas and Terps lose out here- which does not mean anyone did anything wrong, of course. That is just how these things go. You have to pursue guys of this caliber to get them. And who knows how it will play out, as there do seem to be some entitlement issues.

Going to Maryland would have been catastrophic as we would constantly hear how awesome Kevin Willard, Mike Jones and UMD were from the Maryland supporters/Hoyas-Cooley haters on here. Villanova would also have been bad because of the Mediocre Kyle Neptune/Villanova guys on here plus we would see them constantly in the Big East. KU everyone can rationalize that as a top blue blood, who spent cash $$$ and have a top brand unlike Maryland.

Wow he committed 2 weeks ago and kept it silent. Usually there are leaks somewhere. He kept it under wraps.
I don’t think he screwed over any of the schools by stringing them along. They were going to move their 5 men to play out of position at the 4 to accommodate a top center. I don’t think they would shuffle their lineups for a lesser player.

. All things equal he would choose MD. He’d be coming home and playing with a former teammate and coach he thinks he can win a lot with. But they are not offering as much NIL. Kentucky is offering a lot more and Calipari can convince any kid he can make them an NBA player. But that roster is very young and playing with a couples OADs who want to showcase themselves is a concern. Someone I know says it’s those two schools. You were totally off.

Nobody had a clue where he was going except HD and the Kansas staff. “Insiders” at every school were in the dark.

Are you just assuming he committed when he visited Kansas? Is there some evidence that that video was shot two weeks ago? Is it not possible he flew there yesterday or today and met Self.

Cannot see how this was a win for us....I personally do not care about bragging rights e.g. Terps ( of course for those of you who live in the DMV, I can see ). They lose, we lose. He would have been a great building block to initiate the Hoya revival, but hopefully Cooley is well prepared. Clearly he wanted the NIL but also a chance at a National Championship...and he bet on Self. Good bet.

Maryland stayed in to the very end and thought they had a legitimate shot so very psychologically devastating to them like Nerlen Noels last minute swerve was for us.

Never mind, there was a video of him committing to Kansas, but apparently it was recorded yesterday.

Never wanted this bum (I’m coping) Ha. Cognitive dissonance is our friend. Good thing is the writing has been on the wall that he wasn't coming here for some time so there was no surprise here.
