Yeah. Ronny has become the boogeyman for some. Lots of fan fiction out there as well as misplaced frustration. The personal stories of told by Kevin Braswell and Chris Wright on the Dawg talk podcast alone are enough to not want him around the program in any way. The Thompson/Ewing lovers will stay willfully ignorant no mater the evidence. I’m not surprised. deleted

I think it's clear that Ronny has been a net negative since Ewing was hired. But who in the program hasn't been? I just don't think everything that's gone wrong recently can somehow be traced back to Ronny. If you really want to go that route you should probably be tracing it back to the person that put him in the chief of staff role to begin with.

The point that I & others are making is that RT has been a net negative long before PE was hired. Is he solely responsible for the terrible state of the program? No, but he's done nothing to merit being involved in any aspect of the athletic department...

If you really want to go that route you should probably be tracing it back to the person that put him in the chief of staff role to begin with. The other issue here from the alumni/fan perspective is that without Ronnie being a Thompson, there's no way he would have ever been selected for Chief of Staff. And that might be okay if he had skills, if he was qualified (much like JT3 was when he was hired), etc. But, Ronnie's record, particularly at Ball State, was abysmal. And reports like the one involving Ewing's communications person indicate that he wasn't a good manager either. And you have people who knew him well and interacted with him, like Chris Wright (who generally is extremely supportive of alumni getting jobs with the program), saying he should have nothing to do with the program. To me that says all you need to know, and that doesn't even account for his overseeing part of a program that was horrible the last two years. Ronnie Thompson is an alumnus, and I don't think he should be banned from games or anything like that. That would be silly. He should be welcome at alumni events if he chooses to visit, but he should have the same access other alumni get. He shouldn't get special treatment because of his father, and he certainly shouldn't have any active involvement in the program considering his contribution to its massive decline. I completely agree that Ronnie Thompson wasn't the only problem (Ewing was a much bigger problem as far as coaching went), but he was a significant red flag of a program that was operating and administered poorly.

I remember Ronny being somewhat limited athletically, but he had nice form on his jump shot, with a high arc and good rotation. He didn't get too much run, but his outside shot always looked pretty good.

He didn't get too much run, but his outside shot always looked pretty good. Ronny was a bundle of nerves on the court. His jump shot was horrible as the career 26% from 3 and 68% from FT show. It actually looked like Hot Potato whenever he received the ball. Also, at 6’4” guard, he was delicate and allergic to rebounding (0.9 career rpg). He averaged around 0.5 apg and about the same for TO because he mostly made safe passes to the sides. Remember when JT3’s late teams would pass the ball around the perimeter without making a move towards the basket? Ronny would have fit right in. But the worst was how the annual basketball issue of one of his playing years had Nervous Ronny listed as an “inbounding specialist”. I guess JT2 had to make him feel special and threw him that bone.
