I agree that Ya-Ya was an unsung hero. He led the BE in rebounding his senior year and he almost made my list.

1. Charles Smith (for beating ND while practically on his knees)
2. Patrick Ewing (for that Cambridge, MA press conference with HS coach Mike Jarvis, announcing his college choice -- and everything that happened in the next 4 years)
3. Craig Shelton (most awesome hops of any Hoya ever)
4. Sleepy Floyd (for all those baseline jumpers with two guys in his face)
5. Michael Graham (for deluding us into thinking we'd get 3 more years)
Honorable mention: AI, Zo, Reggie, Mutumbo, Page, Eric Smith, Sweets, Jeff

Great topic, but hard because I don't want to exclude so many players that I grew up supporting and appreciate, but here it goes:
1. Patrick Ewing---#2 on down is very DISTANT compared to Big Pat!
2. Allen Iverson
3. Reggie Williams
4. Mike Sweetney
5. Sleepy Floyd
This list is my favorite players to watch as Hoyas, but as I said, it's so hard to omit other players who brought great moments to my childhood and I've grown up with. Currently, my favorite player is Jeff Green and he could creep onto this list before his career is over.
Favorite team was '84 team because it had Michael Graham and Gene Smith to go with the great players like Pat, Reggie, Wingate, Michael Jackson, and solid role players like Broadnax, Fred Brown, and Ralph Dalton.
Charles Smith and '89 team was my next favorite team AFTER the Ewing era and AI's '96 team comes in 3rd. Entire Ewing Era was a joy to watch and most fun I've had watching CBB ever!

before reading this please realize i was born in 1990 and only started watching hoya bball about '96
1. Mike Sweetney- I remember his Jr. year I went to see him play against UCLA, a game in which he didn't play too well. I went back to the campus with my dad to the bookstore and for lunch at the tombs and saw him entering throught the gates as we were leaving. I told him he played a great game (lie) and asked him if he is coming back next year and he said, "without a doubt!" (lie) I got his autograph on my jersey and it now is framed in my room.
2. Allen Iverson...probably more because of his NBA days
3. Kevin Braswell- I remember the NIT game against UVA (3OT?) where he came to play and the shot at the buzzer @ MSG to beat WVU (one of my first Hoya games!)
4. Victor Page- He was just good
5. Brandon Bowman- I remember the NIT finals against SJU...I looked to my father and said, "He could take this team somewhere in 3 years"

#1 John Duren One of the 2 most intense players ever, and had to sustain it over more minutes than the other (see below). Best memory- him leading a comeback from 22 down in the second half to beat Manhattan #2 David Wingate If you wrote a book on defensive basketball techniques, you could illustrate every one with a picture of Wingate guarding his man. #3 Gene Smith As intense as Duren, but in shorter stretches. #4 Sleepy Floyd From his 28 against Maryland at the beginning of his freshman season to the '82 championship, a pure scorer. Casual observers and lazy sportswriters talk about that game as Patrick vs Jordan because they had the most prominent subsequent careers. They both were important to the game, but my memory is of Sleepy and James Worthy matching shot for shot throughout the second half. They were the real studs that day. #5 Perry McDonald. At 6'4" scoring 26 over Seikaly to beat Syracuse. Up and coming: Jeff Green. The kid's got special talent and he comes from Hyattsville. Non-Hoya who I most wish we'd recruited successfully: same answer as JT II: Ernest Graham.

1. Patrick. Hoya Basketball is still defined by him.
2. Derrick Jackson. A great stroke.
3. AI - the most athletic.
4. Charles Smith. A phenomenal 4 year development. Who can forget him in the '89 Big East and NCAA run?
5. Dikembe Mutumbo. Others would displace him on GU basketball accomplishments, but the category is Greatest Hoyas. Offcourt, you have to concede it's him.
Honorable mention: Sleepy and Reggie.

Best Yates basketball player I've ever seen: Hoya benchwarmer Chip Simms. He could knock 'em down from the 3-point line with the best. It was amazing.

Top 5 shots since I've been watching the Hoyas include a looooong 2-pointer (before they were worth 3) by a sub guard to tie GW at the buzzer in a game Hoyas went on to win in OT. The guard may have evetually made a lousy coach, but Esherick could shoot.

I've been watching Hoya Basketball since 1964 and have seen them all. I have favorites from all of the different classes. Certaintly in the mid sixties you had to love the three James: Christy, Barry and Brown. Then came the late 60s and early 70s and we had likes of Adrion, Laska, and Laughna. I must admit that I had no favorites for some years after that group. Then came Derick Jackson, John Dren and Big Sky Shelton. I'm not sure if it was the down years or those guys were really that good, but I loved that team. The more recent years have been covered by everyone else so after a lot of thought here are my FIVE FAVORITE Hoyas of all time.
1. Patrick 2. Sleepy 3. Alonzo 4. Big Sky Shelton 5. Mike Laughna

i know everyone will think why not iverson in my top 5 but ,i think he does not support the hoyas as much as he should. JC, just so you know, from what I hear Iverson is still involved -- below the radar. Could he do more? Sure, they all could. But he is still involved from time to time with the current team and with recruits. -- or so goes the information I hear. Maybe others can shed additional light?

Who was that?
