hahaha... that's about as vague as the poster who said last month that renovated McD plans are all but done and will be announced soon then vanished into thin air. Who was that? LOL! I guess you are right Buffalo -- Pretty vague. I don't know about the McD plans. But I was trying to be careful about sharing info and not exaggerating. I guess I went too far the other way. All I can say is, I have it on good authority that AI has been and continues to be involved. Can't say any more than that.

Is it a bad thing to say AI is involved with his former school? I would think it is good thing, no?

Why is it such a secret? Is it a bad thing to say AI is involved with his former school? I would think it is good thing, no? Agreed that it is a good thing. But in the absence of permission to share more, I won't. It is up to JT3 and AI to share whatever they choose. I can make a guess as to why they might perfer not to, and that has to do with AI's privacy. I am sure there are a ZILLION demands on his time. And that he draws a crowd wherever he goes. If every kid we were recruiting knew AI sometimes gets involved, I'd bet every single one of them would want to meet him... wouldn't you? Then if someone does not get that opportunity, they could feel slighted. Just a guess, but I'd bet JT3 and Pops keep the lid on requests for AI's help... and limit it to those times when it is really really key. And I am sure they don't want people to know when AI might be showing up on the hilltop... it would be like the Beatles or something. I would guess the same applies to Pat Sr., Zo, and the others.

Yeah, I guess its just privacy thing with AI. He is kind of private. But then again, he is a Hoya! ;D I always got the impression he was close with coach Thompson and thats it. But then when I heard DJ Owens talk about how he talked to AI, and how he said AI followed the team and AI gave him a few pointers on his game, I was totally shocked. You never really hear AI's involvement or him mentioning GU like you do from Pat, Zo, Dike, or even Othella.

Then came Derrick Jackson, John Duren and Big Sky Shelton. I'm not sure if it was the down years or those guys were really that good, but I loved that team. The more recent years have been covered by everyone else so after a lot of thought here are my FIVE FAVORITE Hoyas of all time. 1. Patrick 2. Sleepy 3. Alonzo 4. Big Sky Shelton 5. Mike Laughna Hoya71, lots of great names in there. I thought about Laughna too -- I also loved Artie White, though he only played two years .. I think. Duren and Derrick Jackson were definitely favorites. As were Jonathan Smith and Merlin Wilson. And Mike Sweetney more recently. But the top 5??? My absolute top 4 are: Pat AI Sleepy Reggie After that.... so many are so close. I guess I would put Big Sky up there as the fifth. what a terrific team that '80 bunch were! So add #5. SHELTON As for folks who choose Boubacar, Joey, Ya Ya (Grandpa), and others.... this thread is for "favorites", not best or anything else. And why do folks like those guys? I think it is because they played all out all the time, over their heads in terms of physical gifts. If some of those guys are some folks favorites... good for them! And besides, Boubacar was somewhat of an on-court "bodyguard" for Iverson. I like that too. Heart counts for a lot....and those guys had it. But one last thing, I don't think we ever had a player with more heart than Iverson. Or more physical talent either.

You never really hear AI's involvement or him mentioning GU like you do from Pat, Zo, Dike, or even Othella. I know you are a big fan of AI and that you follow his career etc. So you are undoubtedly aware of how loyal he still is to his homies, his mom, his wife, those who were with him back in the day. All the people he supports. Loyalty is a big deal to him.. a big part of his life. So given what a crucial role Pops and GU played in his life, it is not at all surprising that he would repay them with loyalty.

1. Patrick. He defined the dominant program of the '80s. 2. Gene Smith. '84 semis was the best defensive performance I've ever seen. 3. Reggie. His shooting was key in '84, and he did it all in '88. 4. JYD. Loved the way he rebounded. 5. Perry McDonald. 6'4" and too much for Syracuse inside.
Honorable mentions: Sweetney, Wingate, Durren, Othella, AI, Deke, 'Zo, Smitty and many others.

My top 5 (in no particular order, although Ewing is my favorite):
1. Ewing 2. JYD 3. Boubacar Aw 4. Deke 5. Mike Sweetney
I think Jeff and Roy may make a run at some of our lists when all is said and done.

I bet there are some freshmen at GU whose favorite player is Jeff. And that's great.
Each new generation of Hoya fans will have their own favorites. The ones they saw in person. The ones who gave them some great victories and incredible moments. Those of us with a more historical perspective might see it differently. But the key is having the younger fans building that emotional bond with the program. And another key is keeping the interest and commitment of alumni and other fans who have followed the program for years. That's really what I love about JT3... he has made this a fun and exciting and hopeful program with lots of upside!
Besides, given another couple of years, Jeff might make his way onto many or our (older guys) lists! Or maybe it will be Macklin, or Rivers, or Summers, or....
as Lic would say... GO HOYAS! GO JEFF! GO JT3!

I actually thought about Artie White. I thought he was going to be the savior of the program. Great player!

To show my age, Ray Corley, Tommy O'Keefe, Bill Bolger and Barry Sullivan were a few of my favorites.

1. Ewing 2. Zo 3. Reggie 4. Dikembe 5a. Smitty (Charles, that is) 5b. Perry McDonald 5c. Ronnie Highsmith (Seargant Slam)
That's pretty skewed. I co-matriculated with all of them except Ewing.
If I might be so bold to add...... 6. Roy

I actually thought about Artie White. I thought he was going to be the savior of the program. Great player! I saw Art White at the 1970 NIT reunion event, and he looks as if he can still play some hoops. That was a very well done event. All the players except two made it despite the snowy conditions. Jack Magee did not attend.

He wouldn't be in my top 5, but I always like Vic Samnick (and particularly Vic Shomnick). Not a great player by any means, but a tough guy who always battled and played defense. You need guys like him to win. The great Hoya teams always had guys like him, they just had guys like AI, Reggie, Pat and Sleepy to lead the way.

Maaaaaaaaaan, that takes me back the whole two years or so it's been since Vic stepped into the role of "Substitute Wesley Wilson" and roared through the NIT for reasons I still cannot figure out. I swear that whenever I'm running through the roster of the 2000-2001 version of the Hoyas, I always end up one name short and without fail it tends to be Victor for some bizarre reason. He was great though, he could really shut guys down on defense and then make you laugh on offense. If only we could get Ron Franklin to comically mispronounce more of our players' names...think of the results that could be had with "DIZDAREVIC". And how many votes does Right Said Sead have right now? Have the votes been tallied from the "drunk sophomores near FLHoya's row" precincts yet in this thing?
