This man just blamed NIL and the changing landscape for losing to American and surviving Coppin State in the "preseason." That is point-and-laugh, knee-slapping stuff, Jack.
A new coach is not going to bring me back at this point. It's a toxic, corrupt, disrespectful relationship. Yuck.

This is probably the perfect response if you are Georgetown’s president speaking to a bunch of older alums who likely aren’t super familiar with college ball or haven’t followed the team in some time. Blame it entirely on the ethics of today’s college landscape (ignoring the fact that we probably have kicked a dozen kids out of school over the last few years to prop up this sinking ship). To be frank, I’m not sure what else he could’ve said. The true explanation - that Coach Ewing isn’t working out and we haven’t put him in a position to succeed - isn’t something you can say mid-season about a program legend. I’m not saying I like his answer, just that it’s the perfect hedge if you were in his shoes. It obviously will irritate those of us that follow things closely, but for everyone else it probably made sense.

In my mind, if Georgetown's position is that it no longer wants to field a competitive basketball program, it should make that decision and plan accordingly. And then all of us fans/alumni can decide if the program is worth our time anymore. I think such a decision would be made after Ewing goes - whether that be after his contract ends or after this season ends with another embarrassing record. At some point, before deciding on the next coach, they're going to have to decide on how hard they want to compete for a good basketball program. DeGioia's response didn't leave me optimistic. People keep wondering about JD's firm support for Ewing. The scarier take isn't the faith JD has in Ewing, it's what happens when he realizes that PE is going to lead the program back. It might just be turning off the lights at that point and severely downsizing the program. The comments seemed to be laying the groundwork for that.

He can't really believe this BS, can he? Also insulting that he thinks anyone else would buy it. On a related note, he clearly has too much concentrated power.

The comments made me feel depressed. It just seems like he was outlining the framework for reducing the size and scope of the basketball program into something far outside of a major national program. It felt like we're starting the process of walking away from basketball being big and more into a minor/small conference program. It feels like we will read this statement in the future. "We tried it with Patrick and he gave it his best. During his time leading the program, we learned Georgetown is not compatible with the current landscape of top NCAA basketball." That’s the likely outcome if Locust Club is successful in ousting Ewing/Thompson and erasing them from history with a clean break. Less money will be spent on the program and maybe 200k for a head coach and we won’t even try. I guess that’s good for the football folks though as leaves possibility of more money funneled there. Please identify and explain the Locust Club.

So if OOC is just the "preseason" ... then how was our actual season last year? And with last "season"'s performance, who decided it was a good idea to run it back? Jack was the hall director at New South for several years and is now the President for life. I think he probably is best suited somewhere in between these roles. Nice guy and Hoya. Our endowment and school stature have not improved proportionate to other schools since 2001 when he took over. Ewing is the symptom, Jack is the problem. The Harvard Corporation just appointed its fourth president since Jack took over for us. No University President ever serves this long at any other respectable school. I invite all of you to look at the University Presidents for the top 50 schools and let me know if there is one who has served as long (hint: No - I looked). Jack became Georgetown's longest serving president in 2014 and is the first lay president of any American Jesuit college ever. I am sure the Board can find a suitable replacement (oh wait Jack is on the Board and the rest of the Board is beholden to Jack...). Maybe we should see if the New South hall director is interested?

I really think our university needs a massive change of leadership. His awful stewardship of the program, including authorizing the negligent and possibly reckless Ewing extension in 2021, makes me wonder what other horrible management he's been engaged in over recent years that I am simply not aware of. This is a real scary part for me. But like Jack "has known Patrick since he was 18", I suppose the Board has known Jack since he was 25, so... Also, some really fantastic and articulate comments on this thread which highlight the abomination of his comments.

His hand will be forced eventually, as this season will make clear the team has made no progress. We’ll lose a lot, and eventually, even for Jack it will require action.
The silly thing is every other program in the country would have taken action last year. The reason we didn’t is apparent in Jack’s answer. We have vested authority over a sports program in someone who knows nothing about said sports program. Everything he mentions is secondary to the fact that all our players transfer out and we don’t know how to play defense. Give the power to the AD, once and for all, and take it away from the academics. Let him focus on Supreme Court cases and let the AD focus on how we can win basketball games.

What did you want him to say, they stink? Of course he’s not saying that in that audience. It’s both hopeful and noncommittal which is how these Q&A sessions go.
Not sure why this is essentially a transcript from a private event but that’s for another conversation.

This is astounding. I bet some of our putative peers have had two presidents since 2014.

If anyone wishes to let Healy Hall know of what the majority of the remaining fanbase think of Jack D's "answer" do so respectfully to his VP & COS Joseph Ferrara. Email in link below. president.georgetown.edu/

He's saying though, that it won't force his hand. Because Patrick IS the only person who can do it. That's the major problem. The other major problem with his comments is that he's not acknowledging this is unacceptable. If it were even occurring to JD to terminate the contract at any point in the future, which it is apparent he is not, he would have said we are expecting marked improvement, Patrick is aware of expectations, and we are hoping they are met.

Lol I was wondering if someone was gonna somehow turn this against the people who want Ewing out. How would firing Ewing and Ronny erase history when there are buildings and courts with the name Thompson? That’s so overdramatic. If JD wants to dilute basketball, he’s gonna do it anyway after Ewing is done, but if Ewing really is gonna see out his contract I hope JD finally quits before then to give basketball a chance under a competent president. The “locust club” wants the team to succeed and for students to graduate, but JD and Ewing don’t seem to care all that much so it’s about just getting a couple wins now and finding more excuses to spew. JD of course was gonna give a diplomatic answer since it is early in the season (if he has the spine to do something at all) but this statement insults the intelligence of a lot of people and also makes him look like a fool

Not sure why this is essentially a transcript from a private event but that’s for another conversation. Ooh, let's have that conversation because I think it is very interesting - he's made 0 public comment on the program for how many years now - 2? 3? 4? Has he made any public comment on the program since Ewing's announcement as Head Coach? There were 0 public comments last year after 0-20. However, at a private event in front of donors, he shows a really surprising knowledge of the program from someone we've kind of assumed didn't really follow it that closely, mostly because of the lack of public comment and appearance at games (7 transfers which was exactly right) Would anyone else on the board know the exact number of transfers in last year? I follow this program and I couldn't have told you the number off the top of my head. He knew the W-L record, knew when the next game was. Kind of says to me he's following the progress this year pretty closely.
