Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but is there an economic benefit to the University for allowing Ewing to coach out the remainder of the season, rather than firing him now, mid-season? That is still unknown due to the secret nature of the extension but it is expected that if no negotiation happens, it would be cheaper to wait

That is still unknown due to the secret nature of the extension but it is expected that if no negotiation happens, it would be cheaper to wait The unconfirmed report was that the contract was fully guaranteed with no buyout. If that was the case, legally, timing would not matter. That said, if the university is looking to negotiate with Ewing and possibly pay him less than the full amount owed for purposes of goodwill, etc., they might have more leverage toward the end of the season if we continue to flounder. Georgetown is not the type of institution likely to make a mid-year move. It would also be somewhat insulting to make a move now versus in March when the season is done, as the season is essentially over already. If I am Georgetown, I wait and make a move either just after our final regular game, or right after we lose on Wednesday of the BET. Anything later would be malpractice.

I don't know much about Billy Witz but it appears he is writer for the New York Times.

Total speculation here, but what if there’s a clause in Nickelberry’s contract that bumps his salary if he becomes interim head coach? Something like that seems reasonable in the abstract (bigger role! more work!), and also functions as an additional poison pill against axing Ewing early. Seems like exactly the kind of thing Falk would have had included. (Not that a couple hundred thousand, or whatever, should matter, but you never know.)

I highly doubt Falk represented Nickleberry in his contract negotiations. Falk has big clients not obscure assistant coaches.

I don’t think he represented him per se, but it’s always been my understanding that the funding available for assistant coaches is sort of a part of the head coach’s compensation. As in, “we’ll pay you $X in salary, which might be the same as that other school, but the $Y we can budget for your assistants is better.” In other words, I wouldn’t be shocked if “promote my guy to associate head coach and structure his contract accordingly” was a wish from Team Ewing.

I’d bet Nick has more than a year to year contact so getting rid of him will cost something. Likely a rounding error in this mess but odds are we overpaid for that fraud, too.

Might be tough to put the program into the hands of someone who was sued by his own players. (can't hire Pitino, though)

That we haven't done an actual search for a coach in 50 years. I don't think DeGioia believes that it can't be done - he's a smart guy, I don't think he's like one of those old monks in Game of Thrones combing through genealogical scrolls in the depths of Lauinger or online on the Thompson family ancestry.com entry to find a Thompson family successor to continue the dynastic succession. He had to accept Patrick Ewing and Ronny as a political trade off in firing JT3 and appeasing JT2. Those debts are paid. As bad as those comments were, and as much as we're all (rightfully, in my view) condemning Jack for the extension, it's possible (probable, even) that those comments were lip service meant to show "support" for the incumbent coach while knowing that a change must occur. As infuriating as the deflection on NIL and "if Pat can't do it, nobody can" are, aren't they exactly the kind of things you'd advise Jack to say in public if he's working behind the scenes but isn't ready to drop the hammer yet? I'm not trying to absolve Jack of all blame here, as the extension is inexcusable. But I don't think we should all assume that he really believes that NIL is the problem and that if Ewing can't figure this out, it can't be done and we have to give up. The latter comment, in particular, strikes me much the same way as Shaka Smart's comments about how the Hoyas are certainly a basketball team, all right. I'm going to withhold judgment on the "the admin is throwing in the towel" fears until I see what actually happens with respect to the next coach. So Jack is now playing 3-D chess with all of us? Don’t think so. Occam’s razor.

It’s really too late now, if just based on team performance. It would have needed to happen in December between semesters at the latest.

Barring some major, significant change in circumstance, I simply do not see him leaving mid-season. I doubt DeGioia wants to move on from him at all (it's obvious he adores Ewing), Ewing does not seem like the type to do so voluntarily, etc. I think best case scenario (but still unlikely) is a dismissal between March 1 (our last game) and March 8 (our BET game), which allows him to coach one last game. Or March 9. But, if it comes anytime after March 9 it is too late.

This is (sadly) why we almost have to root for G'Town to go 0-20 again. Jack's words confirm one thing for me, and that's that he wants Ewing to succeed so badly, that even 1 or 2 wins will justify him keeping Ewing on as head coach. This is (again, sadly) what we predicted. That the bar has been set so low, that a couple wins will be seen as progress. I can't stand listening to Jack say that no one is working harder than Ewing. Be that as it may, you can work really hard and still suck at your job, you don't always get an A for effort. I personally don't think Pat's working all that hard anyways, the in huddle coaching you see from him is pretty poor --- certainly way below what you hear from other Big East coaches in the huddle.
What a sad state for Georgetown basketball!

While I hesitate to put emphasis on any of the coaching huddles (I couldn't even understand what Holloway was telling his own players, and Shaka Smart's wasn't exactly awe inspiring either), to the extent it shows anything, it's only that Ewing is not a good teacher/instructor. I don't think it has anything at all to do with whether he works hard. We really have no indication that Ewing isn't working - just that he's not very good at his job. I want to reiterate that this is all very sad, and unfortunately, is ending way worse than even the most pessimistic would have predicted in 2017. You never want to be in this position, but we cannot change the circumstance. I just hope it serves as a cautionary tale against making a disastrous hire again.
