I mean yeah he might, but not because he is actually contributing to the program. And I don't think "naysayers" is an accurate title for people fairly criticizing the chief of staff who has over seen the biggest decline in Georgetown basketball ever and does not even treat his position as a full time job. How do the graduation rates alone not infuriate you, if you are a devout fan of the Georgetown program that was built on the premise that a team can be competitive and retain players to get them a great education? Because he is not an alum and he believes the Thompson/Ewing Cult should be above Georgetown University. Probably and it still is so puzzling because what Ewing and Ronny have done to the program has wrecked much of the foundation of Thompson's legacy like grad rates but they keep chugging the kool aid

It’s funny you guys waste your time on matters that don’t concern you DeGioia and the board members don’t give a damn about your opinions. 😂 And nobody here gives a damn about yours. Exactly!! 😂 😂

Admin, with all due respect I have a different viewpoint than some on this board but I am attacked for supporting the Georgetown Men’s Basketball program. These guys have every right to speak out against the direction of the program. Now if I want defend the program I should have every right to do just that without someone saying he’s not alum like that really matters.

Exactly, so how would he go about convincing an in demand coach to choose Gtown over their other options? What does the program do well besides spend 15 million dollars? A very rich program locared in a basketball hotbed which gives complete control to the coach must be very attractive to any coach… if the Ronnys are removed. Btw, I would prefer a post-ThompsonFamily program to go back to under the AD. I agree about the program needing to go to a normal AD structure like every other program in the conference.. Also, you didn't list anything Gtown does well at this time that would be attractive to popular candidates at this time. I hope I'm wrong but I don't see how just firing RT fixes the decades of dysfunction all that quickly... Look at DePaul, They hired a guy from Kentucky to take over for their terrible long time AD. Take a look at some of his accomplishments, this is the route that should be taken in my opinion.. resources.depaul.edu/newsroom/news/press-releases/Pages/peevy_named_ad.aspx“DeWayne is someone I trust wholeheartedly, to the point where he became the center of our scheduling and worked hand-in-hand with me on just about everything we do. It made it so that he and I talked every day, oftentimes multiple times a day,” Kentucky men’s basketball head coach John Calipari said. “DePaul will see quickly that DeWayne is a gatherer, a listener, a consensus builder and an idea man who gathers the right people in place to execute. I can’t wait to see what happens for the athletic department at DePaul and for DeWayne personally.”
Known for his creative scheduling strategies, Peevy led the creation of the CBS Sports Classic, which started in 2014 and recently signed a three-year extension through 2022. In addition to leading the negotiations of the financial terms, he also had a primary role in selecting the teams, television network and event management company. All four schools involved — University of Kentucky, University of North Carolina, University of California, Los Angeles, and The Ohio State University — have benefited from schedule upgrades, as well as a marquee neutral site doubleheader in major cities.

I’m not going to look back, but that was established. But, you can correct me if I’m wrong. I have no problem saying it since I’m proud of it: I am an alum, a donor and volunteer for GU in various capacities. How about you? For me, Georgetown is first, above any University employee. Would you follow Georgetown basketball if the Thompsons and Ewings were no longer around?

This is why I’m against hiring a young mid-major coach. You need someone with the leverage to fully clear house, and that only would come from someone who is established and has the ability to walk away from the job if they don’t have complete say. I’m a belated Pitino convert but think this is right. This is a horribly unattractive job right now — the best we can hope for is someone to come in, clean house, and win enough games in short order that this is a desirable job for a good, young candidate in 5 years. Also think that eating Ewing’s buyout and paying extra for Pitino is the smart financial move. Ewing’s not going to quit — he’s getting paid. But say 3 years / $6M for Pitino to save any future the program has of generating revenue in the future isn’t bad.

First, according to an article posted around, 70yo Pitino has three years left on a current contract that reportedly pays him in the “high six-figure range” with no buyout. With the $15M budget, there’s plenty of space to pay the buyout and pay him. Second, the new coach would fire all extra meat, which would mean another chunk of change redirected to improvements. Third, a new coach like Pitino would put butts on the seats in CapOne. The excitement would be through the roof, the place would be rocking, which would attract recruits. Fourth, the school would compete for NCAA berths which wpuld produce NCAAT revenue for the BE and for the school. Fifth, former donors, who are angry about the current state of affairs, would return. In sum, not eating the buyout is costing the University.

Yeah I really think this is the case of gotta cut the losses ASAP because this is not getting any better and the longer they wait, the harder it is to claw back and what other high end coach is that cheap salary-wise. And the lack of a buyout for Pitino is literally screaming for him to be hired and a match made in heaven really (financially "strained" program and coach looking for different kinds of redemption but both want a return to the big time and a huge challenge for Pinto to finish his career on with a real bang)

GU needs to make a bold move or the basketball program is done. Fox, Nike or Monumental will eventually communicate the economic realities of sucking. I still watch every game, but I no longer donate to the program or attend games. I do still donate to the university as a whole.

If they clear Ronny & Howze out, Pitino could also reach out to prior players (Wallace, Freeman, Adams) and rebuild an alumni base. Keep Nickleberry possibly through year end and then Pitino could make a decision to retain him or not. I think from all accounts, he seems to have done what was asked of him in bringing in some talent and he seems to be the key connect on our lone recruit next year.

There's a decent chance that Dennis Gates would be our head coach right now if our AD got to do his job.

Be careful what you wish for with Nickleberry. He's a Ronny guy through and through and has been both unsuccessful and part of a staff with major NCAA violations.

Big John was fiercely protective of his “Graduation Rate” which he always defined by “players who stayed 4 years”. What was his real rate of attrition?

He had a lot of transfers to be sure. If he gave you a chance, you got a chance...but the patience was not unlimited, from both sides.

Big John was fiercely protective of his “Graduation Rate” which he always defined by “players who stayed 4 years”. What was his real rate of attrition? The first decade was vey good. www.hoyabasketball.com/features/the_graduates.htmNot every transfer is a failure. Ray Knight, for example, left not for academics but that he didn't want to play behind Patrick Ewing. As time went on, more players chafed under the system and looked elsewhere. Kevin Floyd famously said he could easier sit on a bench at an hour from home than one 3,000 miles away. It's also a function of era, where you went to a school and were expected to finish. From 1960 to 1966, Georgetown had 30 basketball players: one transferred after his freshman year, one went into the military, and everyone else earned a degree. Jack Magee had two transfers in six seasons.

Some are posting as if Pitino would stiff Iona midseason to take a job here. that's pie in the sky. If Ewing leaves midseason, Nickleberry or Baldwin would interim.
