CIA asseses with medium confidence that Saudi Arabia secretly transferred rights to an oil field to Messi.
How's that for a conspiracy theory! đ

So the big question is does Argentina right the ship against a subpar Mexico side and a one-dimensional Poland or does Leoâs international career end with a thud?
I lean toward the former and think they are still a very dangerous side.

There was lots of hand wringing around the states about the USAâs recent performance against them.

Saudi Arabia was better than most portrayed and show how inaccurate some fifa rankings are (also Argentina playing otamendi still puzzles me when lisandro at man utd has been good this season). But everyone seems to be getting away with themselves with hyperbole with it being the biggest upset ever, North Korea beat Italy in â66 and Senegal beat reigning champions France in â02, Northern Ireland beat Spain, those are bigger upsets in my opinion considering the giant skill and training disparity between serious nations and lesser ones 20+ years ago

However in the junk 24/7 sports media, hyperbole is coin of the realm. There were idiots suggesting Aaron Donald is the greatest defensive player ever after last yearâs Super Bowl.

Yeah, Argentina losing qualifies as a real "tragedy" in Qatar. How about the 6000+ indentured servants that died in the lead-up building the infrastructure for this reprehensible event?

No one called it a âtragedyâ. People discussing a sports upset called it an upset, albeit hyperbolically compared to some of the others listed (a list which somehow omits USA over England in 1950). That Qatar and FIFA are disgracefully corrupt is kind of a given.

Would not attend this event if I had free tickets, airfare and lodging. It is example of the worst kind of corruption and exploitation - not dissimilar to the Olympics. Waiting for the first massive protests or incident. If the teams all walked away I wouldnât blame them but they wonât.

That was nerve racking but US held their own today. Do or die in the next one.

Great win today for the US. They still lack the it necessary to get the ball in the back of the net but they did what was needed. Huge order ahead on Saturday but if the mids keep playing like they have and the ball rolls our wayâŚwho knows. Iâm just so glad to have this distraction from Hoya basketball. Maybe this will be the thing that makes the next LeBron play soccer and not basketball.

Yeah this was ideally a test run before many of these players hit their prime age for 2026 but good job so far and I think the Netherlands is a vulnerable side. So now with penalties being on the table in knock outs, Iâll just say weirder things have happened.

Someday we will find out what Gio Reyna did to Berhalter.
This team screams out for attacking creativity and Reyna sits.
Maybe Sargentâs knock will force him to use Gio.
That said, 0-0 to penalties against the Dutch would be no surprise to me.

Agree about Netherlands. This is not the Dutch team that we have seen in the past. Still a tall order but definitely have a chance here. I suspect Gio starts as I think Sargent unlikely to be ready to go and Wright et al havenât necessarily impressed. I have not been a Sargent fan in the past but will give him credit as having some of the best back to the goal hold up play that we have seen on a US front line in some time. We still lack fro creativity but seeing balls bounce 15 feet off a forwards leg has always driven me crazy.

I have no interest in soccer, and don't intend to watch any of it, as I find it to be a big bore (yeah, let's hear it for those great nothing to zero games). I also see that the Los Angeles Football Club won the American championship this year in the North American league, or whatever they are calling it these days. I guess that's a big deal for some, but didn't move the needle for me at all. That said, I am following this in passing, and hope the US team (I guess it's called a "side"?) does well, but it seems like they have a lot of injuries, including one to the player who scored their goal against Iran. It seems like a major lift to beat the Dutch, but since they were good enough to hold the English side to a tie, who knows?

The sport keeps growing in the US. I think 2026 will be a perfect storm (the US will have one of the strongest teams, home field advantage, etc) for the US team to go far in the Cup and, thus, for the sport to explode in popularity in the US. Given GUâs fantastic soccer programs, our school is in a great position to take advantage of what I think is coming. From another website and the kid did not identify the school: âWorld Cup perspective of a college kid This has by far one of the coolest things Iâve been able to witness. I have never seen soccer explode like it has on my campus. Of course college kids will use any excuse to drink at 2pm on a Monday or Tuesday, but who cares. The student body at my school is obsessed with the World Cup now and itâs awesome to see from a long time soccer fan. Weâve got bars opening up at 7 am Saturday now just for the USMNT. Makes me proud. Beat the Dutch.â

As I said, he is a soccer fanatic, and so are his friends from home. Several of them went over to visit for a week during Thanksgiving break. They watched a Netherlands game in Amsterdam and a Belgium game in Brussels (fortunately, not the loss to Morocco with the resulting rioting). Such an awesome experience. Personally, I have been loving the Word Cup.
