The NCAA brackets were unveiled last night, as conference tournaments were concluded. The Big East Conference is well represented (well, maybe not as well as last year, when the Hoyas shocked the basketball world by winning the conference’s automatic bid with the Madison Square Garden sweep…ah, good times). Five Six of the eleven conference teams are in the “Big Dance”, as Villanova (2d seed in the South), Providence (4th seed in the Midwest), Connecticut (5th seed in the West), Creighton (8th seed in the Midwest), Marquette (8th seed in the East) and Seton Hall (9th seed in the South) have extended their seasons. Xavier is also playing post-regular season basketball, having accepted an invitation to the National Invitational Tournament; the Musketeers will host Cleveland State on Tuesday at 9:00 pm, and the game can be seen on ESPN-U. I do not provide game scheduling below for NIT games…there are limits.
Gonzaga enters the NCAA Tournament as the #1 seed in the brackets, and is once again #1 in the penultimate Associated Press Top 25 poll this week; the Bulldogs capped off a 26-3 regular season with the West Coast Conference tournament title in Las Vegas after wins against San Francisco (81-71) and then-#17 Saint Mary’s (82-69). Arizona remained ranked #2 after capturing the Pacific 12 Conference tournament in Las Vegas with victories over Stanford (84-80), Colorado (82-72) and then-#13 ranked California Los Angeles (84-76), to finish at 31-3. Kansas moved up three slots to #3 after the Jayhawks improved their record to 28-6 with a Big 12 Conference tournament championship win in Kansas City by defeating West Virginia (87-63), Texas Christian (75-62) and then-#14 Texas Tech (74-65). Baylor improved one spot to #4 even after the Bears fell in the Big 12 Conference quarterfinal round in Kansas City to unranked Oklahoma, 72-67, dropping their record to 26-6. Those four teams all earned #1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament; Gonzaga in the West, Baylor in the East, Arizona in the South, and Kansas in the Midwest. Tennessee rounded out the top five in this week’s rankings, advancing four spots from a tie for #9, after the Volunteers won the Southeastern Conference tournament in Tampa by defeating Mississippi State (72-59), then-#5 Kentucky (69-62) and Texas A&M (65-50), finishing with a 26-7 record.
Three Big East Conference teams are ranked in this week’s AP Top 25. Villanova advanced two slots, from #8 to #6, after the Wildcats wrapped up a 26-7 season by winning the Big East Conference tournament in New York City with victories over St. John’s (66-65), then-#20 Connecticut (63-60) and Creighton (54-48). Providence fell two spots, from #11 to #13, after the Friars defeated Butler (65-61) and lost to unranked Creighton (85-58) in the Big East Conference semifinal round, finishing with a 25-5 record. Connecticut dropped one spot, from #20 to #21, after the Huskies completed a 23-9 season with a 62-52 win against Seton Hall and a 63-60 loss to then-#8 Villanova in the Big East Conference semifinal round. Creighton and Seton Hall also received votes in this week’s AP Top 25 poll.
Iowa had the largest advance in this week’s ranking, improving eight spots from #24 to #16, after the Hawkeyes captured the Big Ten Conference tournament championship in Indianapolis with victories over Northwestern (112-76), Rutgers (84-74), Indiana (80-77) and then-#9(tie) Purdue (75-66). Auburn had the largest drop in this week’s poll, falling four spots from #4 to #8, after the Tigers lost in the Southeastern Conference’s quarterfinal round in Tampa to unranked Texas A&M, 67-62.
North Carolina, formerly #25, fell out of the AP Top 25 after the Tar Heels defeated Virginia (63-43) and lost to unranked and future tournament champion Virginia Polytechnic Institute (72-59) in the Atlantic Coast Conference semifinal round in Brooklyn. Boise State is now ranked #23, as the Broncos won the Mountain West Conference tournament in Las Vegas with victories over Nevada (71-69), Wyoming (68-61) and San Diego State (53-52).
